  • Hey Horse Lovers! This week I drove 7 hours to a HUGE DRAFT HORSE sale in Iowa. There were 650 Catalog horses and about 100 Uncatalogued horses. We were there for over 14 hours searching. This auction was actually pretty decent and this particular sale was a work horse sale. I was impressed by the auction house and how they called issues out in the ring. They also had a few riding horses and ponies. At this sale there were some amazing draft teams and beautiful equines overall. In this video I will talk about what I am looking for in a potential auction horse purchase and also share some educational tips when it comes to browsing horse auctions. You will get to see my full experience and feel as though you were there! Did any horses catch my interest? The MAIN question is did I bid on any and WIN? Watch to see! ***EDIT*** the clip where I say they are stocks for trimming horses is actually a cattle chute but is similar to stocks and I was using that clip as an example. When I was editing I thought I explained it then realized I didn’t clarify. Basically it’s a design to hold animals in place.

    The great thing about these auctions is that these horses are being bought by people that want them and are prepared to pay the price. Hopefully they will have a long forever home with the owners. 🐴💜🐴💜🇦🇺🇦🇺

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  Рік тому +2

      @@junebyrne4491 most farriers won’t take on large draft horses (like the huge ones over 17hh) because they are to hard on their bodies and some of them require stocks to trim. This is common.

    Oh the dapple gray you had your eye on was a *dream*! Beautiful trot, beautiful color, beautiful personality. This one didn't have as many sad cases but still the mare with the skin issue. :( Poor baby. I wish people wouldn't just pass along their problems to the next owner and instead address them/fix them before selling but that can be said for literally anything that is bought/sold, not just horses. Fingers crossed for a big dapple gray in your next auction visit!!

    • @shannonrickard8605
      @shannonrickard8605 Рік тому

      Sometimes the owner might not have the time or money to treat an injury or illness, so the best thing for the horse is to be sold rather than to stay in a home that can't treat them where they will be neglected. That being said, if someone does need to sell for that reason, the horse's condition should be disclosed in full to any potential buyer and the price should also reflect the issues.

    • @stinkycretingurl
      @stinkycretingurl Рік тому +4

      @@shannonrickard8605 That's the problem. It is never disclosed because disclosing it will affect what they are going to get out of the horse, which negates the very idea that they are doing "what's best for the horse" with an injury or illness by selling it. They aren't, especially with auctions. If they wanted to do the right thing for the horse there are horse rescues all over the country that would take the injured/ill horse. But instead they drag it to an auction and make it suffer, lie and bute the horse and pawn their problems off onto others. It's the way it works and it's genuinely disgusting.

    My 2nd horse was a draft mix. Got her in '72 for $50 at auction. She was part of a bucking string that refused to buck. Sweetest thing ever. Drafts hold a sweet spot in my heart to this day. Would love another one. 541 was gorgeous as were a couple of the all white ones. White would do much better in our desert heat.

    I ❤ your confidence around horses you don't know. Omg I get such anxiety at horse and cow sales. I want all of them, especially at sales where animals have been neglected in Australia.The ❤ this lady has for horses, and all animals is such a wonderful thing. Life care for a horse is expensive,some people think you can get a horse put it in grass field and that's that. Nope, a lot of work,love, and compassion goes into raising a great horse.

    Ah, Kalona - one of the best places to pick up a good horse. We would visit there when I was going to KCC. Wish I lived closer. I think horses are high like everything else now. I know they cost a lot to keep, but that's why you want to make sure of what you're getting. Apparently some of these have UA-cam channels where you can check them out on line beforehand, which is good, but there's nothing like being able to see them ridden in person. You do a super job when it comes to selection. 😊

I was quite surprised of the prices that most of these horses went for. But I totally understand you not wanting to pay a high price at an auction. I also made a mistake of reading some of the comments while watching the video and found out before the end that you didn’t get one 🤪, i usually don’t do that 😂 oh well! That big bay was extremely interesting. He was very tense in there, I would've loved seeing him trot and canter, he had an exceptional uphill build and what looked like a good freedom of shoulder in that tiny clip. I guess age could be an issue and soundness is always a risk at these kinds of Auctions where horses aren't even vetted. There is just so much you can do to cover up lameness so the caveat emptor principle rules big time. Unfortunately there is only so much you can tell surface wise then it becomes a big blind gambol. Very very cheap at 7500 if he was at least half good as he looked and still a decent age. Huge light and responsive, wow and rather smart to look at with his handsome roman profile. Not having seen him move in the open I could still almost believe he could make a worthy dressage prospect.

    Thanks for taking us with you 🥰 I have a 10 yr old draft cross, he is out of a Belgian stud and his mom was a arab/paint cross. He is a buttermilk buckskin pinto, I have had him since he was 7 months old. I can't say enough about the gentle and sensible draft deposition. He has a more refined head and is only 15hh. does take after the draty side as far as conformation. He joins my 17 yr old Palomino Morgan mare and Arab gelding who is turning 28 yrs old. They will be with me forever.

    I absolutely love going to the auctions with you, I love the general ‘scenario’…. the Amish men conducting the sales, the young riders and even the ‘poop scoopers’, it is a rich environment, one I would NEVER experience. So, from the comfort of my armchair (yes, I’m one of those) I say ‘thankyou’. I have to tell you that I have only been seated on a horse once in my life and that was the sturdy steed of the milkman…. I was 2 years old and I’m 75 now😊. BUT…… on the other hand I grew up with my very own horse, rode her to and from school every day, stabled her in a corner of my bedroom, groomed her and cleaned out those hooves EVERY DAY. I called her Star, she was a Haflinger . I had her in my heart and head for years and my room was full of horsey books and posters. You could say she was my ‘invisible’ friend but anyone who has had an ‘actual’ invisible’ friend will know only too well that there are ‘levels’ of invisibility. So, there we are, my experience with horses😉. I am definitely waiting with bated breath for the day you buy a beautiful Haflinger. Your videos come into homes right around the world and for this viewer they rise my happy memories, so I wish love and happiness with all your endeavours from Belfast, Northern Ireland 😘.

    I’ve been watching your videos and I love them! If I were in the market for another pony I’d love having someone like you to help. I have a large mini right now but when my granddaughter outgrows her I’ll want a bigger one.

    I love that you dont always buy a horse. You really think about it. a lot of youtubers buy so many horses for views and clicks. I respect you so much for not letting views and clicks get in the way of thinking of a horses health more.

      Thank you! I honestly feel guilty when I don’t buy sometimes but I have to know it’s the best choice when the time (and horse) is right ❤️❤️❤️. I really appreciate your comment and your support.

    I like the action videos, whether you buy one or not, and I certainly don’t need to be biting my nails any shorter which is exactly what happens when you are bidding 😅!

    I’m from SE Iowa. Kalona horse prices for specialty auctions generally run high. When they have regular auctions, 3/4 of the horses go for meat prices. They’re one of the main slaughter lines in the US.

      Yes I hear their loose pen auction is pretty big and cheap. But this sale was actually decent and I was surprised.

      @@freespiritequestrian Same here! The Amish in that area can be pretty 50/50 with how they care for their animals. But there’s quite a few that make big businesses out of it and are quite successful! Good luck the rest of this week!
