  • Resist the urge of the shiny new alarm system that your builder wants to install so that you don't end up paying $500 more per year than you need to. Opt for a Ring, SimpliSafe, Nest or one of the other DIY alarm systems instead.

I just installed the Retrofit Kit. And although it works, it is quite disappointing for these reasons:
    1. the Retrofit Kit is meant to utilize existing wired sensors and eliminate the need for using sensor batteries. BUT..., the Retrofit Kit is powered by batteries! Huh?
    2. the Retrofit Kit does not allow the ability to utilize the old alarm's siren, likely because the Retrofit Kit uses battery power.
    3. the Retrofit Kit does not support fire/smoke/carbon monoxide zones.
Has anyone successfully converted the Retrofit Kit from CR123a battery powered to using a DC power adapter? If so, would appreciate hearing how you did it and if it worked out for you.

Like the tip on the RING. Yes, the alarm companies try to throw scare tactics. Yes, you pay more for wired systems, but you get what you pay for. I have an old wired system. I'm switching over to a wired to a wireless control panel/converter system (highly recommended Qolsys IQ 4). What I will be paying for monitoring, including smoke, carbon monoxide, home automation, burglar alarm, all that for $

The only concern would be that if the power or Wi-Fi is down, the backup signal is sent out on a 2G signal. Cellular providers plan to shut off the 2G networks in favor of 4G/5G in 2021, so at that point there won't even be an alert to the monitoring station if the bad guys cut the power/Wi-Fi.

I got it installed using the Tech service on the Ring site and overall have been very happy and it works great. Very occasionally when I go to set it it will tell me that a door is open that hasn't been open in hours and I have to go open/close it, but the other 95% of the time it works great. I just added a few more indoor cameras yesterday after my motion detector set the alarm off falsely. I'd gladly buy it all again. And, Ring tech support has been AMAZING every time I've called them over the years.

You get what you pay for… these flimsy systems are not very reliable and don’t offer you much protection. You don’t need to spend a ton of money to get a professional alarm system, and you can still install them yourself although it’s a bit more intricate. I personally recommend the Interlogix Concord 4 or the Honeywell Vista 20p. And you can either self-monitor or pay a company like I do to do it for $8/mo. I use AlarmRelay but there are many options.

Sorry, my quote on the cost for the Qolsys iq 4 was a mistake. This control panel alone is $450. There are add-ons as well to this cost, for sensors, additional remote key pads, and a translator/converter that costs $99 if you have a wired system of sensors to your existing control panel and you want to keep these wired sensors. Also, installation of the system by an independent installer that does not require you to sign with them for monthly monitoring is around $250-$350. In fairness, many alarm companies will charge you near $1000 for the equipment, and if it is proprietary, it forces you to use only their monitoring service. The Qolsys devices allow you to get monitoring from any company, and the monitoring is very cheap, under $20 max for a monitoring center and complete access to cameras, sensors, and even home monitoring. Check prices :).

Regarding the RING retrofit kit: High quality control panels and systems (Qolsys IQ4) for $100-$120 also come with what are called converter/translator panels; Ring is not the only one, and the problem with the Ring kit is that you are locked into their system. The Qolsys system is generic, leaving you as the owner with the control to take your business to any monitoring company---you are not bound to RING by having their proprietary equipment.
