Hard to focus on fundamentals when the bjj gym I went to just throws all levels and belts together and teaches them all whatever move they’re working on that day. Would have really appreciated a class that taught step by step the most important things to know and laid a foundation to build on.

    • @brdagr

thats how my gym is right now. i've been going for about 2 weeks and think I'm going to take some time off to practice my funamentals. john danaher has a free video series of 160 minutes worth of instructionals on solo drills to practice fundamentals and I think I will work on my cardio during this time as well. in a couple months I'll re-approach taking another in person class but right now there's a lot of basic ground work I have to do to get myself at the physical state I should be at. since your comment is a year old I hope you've progressed far in your bjj journey!

I’m a stand up fighter. When teaching I normally teach white belts 90% straight basics and maybe 10% something advanced as a sort of carrot on a stick to keep them interested. Like a spinning back fist for example on pads.
I then explain that the basics are essential in doing that spinning backlist correctly.

I have the same question as @Mr Wizzykin! At class we learn what I'm assuming are fundamental moves and I try to retain them as much as possible, but it would be nice to have a list of fundamentals to study and practice outside of class as well (I expect this would also help me retain more from class even if they aren't the sames moves, since it would make my brain more accustom to the terms and concepts). The most effective way that I've found works for me, when practicing ANYTHING, has been to learn the principles and to learn how to do "simple" really well.

Fundamentals are the very basic and minor details that are easy to overlook. They stay relevant regardless of the ruleset or the current meta game. Fundamentals inherently create consistency in one's performance. Here are some of the fundamentals I can think of:
      Base
      Balance
      Posture
      Framing
      Guard retention
      Managing over/underhooks
      Grip fighting

I vividly remember walking into this home and noticing a very minor crack running along the length of the ceiling and what appeared like a slight slant in the floor (neither my realtor or my wife noticed it until I pointed them out and they really looked at it). We then went back outside and looked at the home, saw a crack in the foundation and told the owners... they had it inspected and unfortunately for them they were not allowed to sell the home without fixing the foundation.

i know everybody always talks about the basics but what really defines basic?? is it the type of guard you're playing and/or type of sweep you're utilizing? considering i love the lasso and spider guard as a white belt since I'm able to maneuver my hip unlike the full guard. there isn't really any set in stone type of guidelines that'll tell you these are the basics. So what are the basics? lol

    • @yowza9638
      @yowza9638 6 років тому

We could go about building a good definition of "basic" for this context by starting with the general definition. According to Merriam Webster, that which is "basic" is "of, relating to, or forming the base or essence."
We can cross-apply this to Jiu-Jitsu. We know that there are certain positions that arise more often than others, like mount and side control. We also know that there are certain positions from which a plethora of other positions can be reached, like the "basic" full guard leads into the "intermediate" or "advanced" lasso and spider guard that you mentioned. These are thus "basic" because they serve as a starting point or point of transition for just about every other Jiu-Jitsu position or technique.
Thus, in Jiu-Jitsu, "basic" positions are those that most often become relevant while grappling.

Don't let anything get hyperextend obviously but defend safely until the very end.If you get caught over and over in the same position use that to find little intricacies of spacing, shrimping out, just trying out different things in a defensive mindset. If someones controlling you in a certain position for a certain amount of time, take that advantage to start getting crafty, not letting them get what they want so easily.

If you're brand new just tap to locks as soon as they get something locked in. E.g they are in armbar position or isolated an arm with a kimura.
Chokes you can try and fight for a second or two if they arn't tight. Like standing out of a triangle Otherwise you're gonna feel it and tap anyway.
If they are cranking your neck just tap and go again. Spending a minute struggling in a bad arm triangle will just cause you harm and your going to tap anyway
