Portal 2 is probably my favourite single player game of all time, the writing is amazing and you could tell Merchant came up with a lot of his lines.
Steve was great in Portal 2. Played that through twice, along with the original. Brilliant games.
Amen. Both games have such replay value too. We're about 11 years overdue a fuckin 3rd installment though, the pricks at Valve!
Dynamite
Ricky: I'm never bored with you, Karl .. it's brilliant. I'd like to rent you out to people.
Steve: See me, I'm different.. I would happily leave him now in the bottom of the cupboard.
Karl: Until quiz night! 🤣🤣
🤣🤣
No way you got Kenny Loggins without even knowing who he is 😂😂 crazy!
Haha! It was a good clue! 🤣
Yeah that was pretty brilliant
Holy shit your Ross doing a velociraptor was absolutely SPOT ON 😂😂😂
Hahahaha! Not my first time 🤣
The Ricky subtitles when he slurs his sentences at top speed were great, hopefully Rusty makes that a permanent feature.
If I can understand them myself :) hehe
Oh my god this was the origins of Karl’s film idea from the podcast! Tom cruse, new face, new mission impossible. I never realised before.
I just thought that. This conversation clearly lodged in his mind.
Most of the podcast/animated show is material from this show tbh. But with the podcast Merch and Gerv spend some time in the writers office coming up with questions to ask Karl to create a sort of "best of" compilation of Karl. There aren't many questions they ask Karl in the podcast that they didn't know the answer to.
I think when Ricky says he thought of Karl as "sweet", it's his completely genuine, rather innocent, child-like nature. He doesn't mean anyone any harm and never has. I assume that's what they're getting at.
Steve also did voice over for Barclay's bank adverts and for Kenco coffee here in the UK. It's funny, as "fans" online were calling him a sellout for lowering himself to doing the ads. Any real fan would have known his views on it from this.
Lol, very true!
Mandy, firstly, the Ross Velociraptor impression made me laugh so much because that's my favourite Friends moment ever 🤣
And secondly, I literally cheered out loud when you got the Rockbusters answers as he was reading them out 😁 I feel so proud!!
Thank you! All in all, it was a great day 🥹
I think Karl knew he was in the wrong on voice-over gate with Steve.. that's why he tries to bring light to the situation and get ricky on his side by saying "there must be a tractor sale on somewhere" 🚜 😂
It's not a great move by Karl. But Steve did have an agent they should be calling and it's not Karl. I wouldn't be deleting it because "whatever". I'd delete it because I didn't take them seriously.
congrats on your 3/3 on rockbusters, you have officially embodied the spirit of karl (for better or worse)
Yay! 🤗✨️
I’ve listened to these hundreds of times and still don’t get some of them 😂
34:52 Karl doesn’t need the cinema, he’s got Elephant Man and Kes on VHS on rotation.
The first face transplant wasn’t done until 2005 so I can see why they would think it was ridiculous
That procedure isn't exactly what Karl is imagining anyway. It's like any other skin graft. You're not gonna look like the person who donated it.
I only got Kenny Loggins because I'd heard the name before, so well done for guessing it out of thin air, Mandy!
I heard somewhere that the voiceover work that he failed to get thanks to Karl was the minor role of Lightning McQueen's manager in the UK version of Cars and it went to Jeremy Clarkson instead.
Don't know if it's true or not, but it if it is, then that would've been a decent amount of Disney money lost for a few voice lines.
There's a UK version of "Cars"? Why? I know they've been dubbed to many languages but from American to British seems like a waste of time.
@@laupstad Not a full dub, but it was a minor change for a small character that barely appears. There are a few movies that have a random person being played by a British person for only one role.
There's an entire Eddache video about British dubbed roles of US movies.
@@Jimjamatic Oh right, so it was in the regular English/American version of it then? That makes more sense. Not a fully dubbed British version of it?
I'm Norwegian and there is a fully dubbed Norwegian version of most Pixar movies and I know it's been dubbed to like 30+ languages.
@ Yeah, they'll sometimes switch out a famous person who plays a minor role in a film with one who's most famous in a certain region.
One that comes to mind is the butch barmaid in Shrek 2/3 was Larry King in the US but Jonathan Ross in the UK version.
@@Jimjamatic Interesting. I never knew that. In my country these movies are fully dubbed to our language and most times with fairly famous actors from here but I never watch those version. I always go for the original American version.
Always good to see a moment where Karl is in the wrong. It's a good test to see if some people will just blindly defend him because they prefer him to Steve. But yeah, an undeniably selfish moment from Karl there. This and the 50p change incident, Steve is in the right for sure
I think most people have been trying to defend Ricky and Steve more than Karl. Most of the time he just seems so defenseless. That's far from the case. Karl can definitely deal as well as he gets. He just rarely does.
I call 'em like I see 'em 🤣
Absolutely agreed
To this day if I’m with someone and there phone isn’t working I’ll just randomly shout “they canny logins!!”
Haha, love it!
Steve: "you're as bad as my agent"
inspiration for Steve's character in Extras 🤣
I thought the same thing! Haha
It's always weird to go back to these shows now, considering how attention starved Ricky Gervais is nowadays. Exactly the person Ricky from this era would make fun of.
Thanks for the episode as usual, Mandy; always a great thing to enjoy on my car ride home from work.
stop ruining the illusion... let us all live in the early 2000's
Another of Karl's stories has happened. Yestaday I saw on the news a postbox is going to be moved because snails keep eating the letters😂😂😂
Lmao! Love it!
Mandy u killed it on rock busters! When u stabbed at Kenny logins 😂 I freaked out! 3 for 3
🤣🤣
You got Kenny Loggins! 🤣
This video made my day, Mandy. Have a great weekend 🤘🏻
Thank you! 🤗✨️
3 out of 3!! 😯 I’m super impressed Mandy 👏
As you should be Liam! 🤣
@MandyCaneLane Haha! Van Halen and Cher you got pretty quickly, but Kenny Loggins? I actually threw my phone in the air! 😂
1:18:55 There may be your answer on the Karl and Suzanne compatibility debate 😂
I love how NOBODY ever addresses how Ricky just switches sides mid-sentence just to escalate the argument. He antagonizes both of them so much!
Steve pulls him up on it a few times
Lmao
I think the woman at the end was angry with Ricky because he left, rather than put up with her. Going through the bag was just a detail Ricky dropped in to show how entitled she was
The feature could be called "hair, does he need it?"
Im making french toast 🍞✨
Yum!
Subtitles is apparently a generational thing. 'Kids' now have grown up watching things on small screens, often in places where they need to have the sound turned down and therefore watch with subtitles and so have developed a strong skill for reading subtitles which older generations are weaker at doing (that is, reading them with high level of comprehension). With video games also it is very common to read subtitles throughout and is something young(er) people now have done from a young age, whereas pre 90s generations had no chance to develop that skill unless they watched films in foreign languages. Essentially the more computer adept you are the more likely you are to have stronger skills for effective subtitle reading, especially if you became screen literate very young. Old fogies, failing to recognize their own skill gap because it was a gap that was common in the past make the wrong assumption that young people are 'missing' everything by reading subitles because THEY would be if THEY did it. They harp on this point that you can't "look at the picture and read the words" without understanding that those younger people CAN synthesize the visual information like that, at least to a much higher level than they can. This is something that would be demonstrated to them if they watched a Twitch stream for example and see how the streamer is perfetly adept at following a chat log (writing on a screen) whilt still being totally focused on the visual content.
"Karl, why haven't you paid the bills?" Karl: "I'm busy." "Karl, why aren't you making Rockbusters in your own time?" Karl: "I'm busy." "Karl, why are you putting sausages in the toaster?" Karl: "I'm busy."
I like watching stuff with subtitles, too… the weird thing I find is, after a while, Iit’s almost like your brain forgets that you’re reading and you almost hear the lines being delivered!
Very true!
I think Steve's hatred for fat people came from his own unusual appearance. He had a very odd look and shape at the time and was probably made fun of a lot. Steve couldn't make fun of someone's hair or voice or face or height and couldn't call anyone skinny because it would be hypocritical. But no one could call him fat. So, when he got the chance, he'd unleash it all on fat people.
Hmmm... very interesting theory!
I think he's just a misanthrope.
The Technics bag was made up. :) There was no XFM bag images, so I grabbed one from Technics, and put an XFM logo on it. :)
Can't believe to pretty much got Kenny Loggin's, simply by deduction. That was great. Well done on Rockbusters!
The bit where you said the Karl liked his wig, but then stopped liking it because Suzanne did... would that count as 'sweet'?
I reckon Karl thinks a lot of Suzanne in his own way.
Also the railway guy lost both his legs in a train accident because he used to like to jump from carriage to carriage.
All explained in the QR codes.
You outdid yourself with this one. Actually confirming Karls Monkey News and "translating" the pub discussion. Spot on! Great work as always!
Thank you both for being amazing!
Hey Rusty, Mandy missed it but what was with the quick flash of Michael Jackson in the 3rd Rockbusters clue? I’m guessing it’s a clue to the answer but I can’t figure it out 😅
@ Oh thanks laupstad. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@SketchyMagpie Ah that's when Steve laughs and it sounds like a yelp from Michael :)
No Rusty! Karl is still not sweet, lol.
And the clues were just yoo good this time! I could not fail! Haha!
You have done some brilliant work friend! 💚
buy it in bottles ;)
I always thought he was saying Biting Bottles 😅
To be fair, the original 60s series of the same name that Mission Impossible is based on , had 171 episodes , so the soon to be 8 movies is nothing compared to that 😅
Mandy you were on the British news today... Sort of apparently you were washing your hair in a river and dyed it bright red
Oh dang! You guys heard about that? 👉🏻👈🏻😅
Well I'm on spare today. So just listening to this today.👍
🤗✨️
The fact you even got Kenny for the Scottish one was impressive, but then you actually got it!
😎
3 out of 3 rockbusters solved, you have achieved endarkenment, you're thinking like Karl at last
At last 🤗✨️
Thank You!!!
🤗✨️
This is where the seed was planted for Karl’s film idea years later on the animated show where Tom Cruise dies and Brian (played by Ted Danson) gets his brain in Toms body and has to make his movies
OMG!!! Haha, amazinggggg!!!
wow you smashed rockbusters you got them all well done!!
Thank you! 🙌🏻🤗✨️ I am still proud 🤣
You're 100% right about subtitles!
Kenny Loggins wow! Amazing!😂😂
These reactions have definitely become a part of my Fridays... "See you next week" (1:18:46)
Haha! Love to hear it! 🤗✨️
also, smerch got his voiceover fame in the game portal, so everyone lived happily ever after
My guess about popcorn: corn was plentiful and cheap. Cinemas would have started around the Great Depression, when money was really tight. Once it was established as a movie snack, it would have remained because it has a huge profit margin for the theatre. They don’t have to buy it in like candy bars, but can make it themselves.
Makes sense!
I notice Rusty is dropping himts for Derek 😂 come on Mandy let's have some Derek after Peepshow
Hahahhaa!
literally just heard Karl doing a voiceover on a smarty mobile ad, wonder if he remembers what he did back then. Also there's a famous voicemail he left being sick of doing their agents work, he was being really short on it
I went to watch Interstellar on a big Imax screen with the fancy shakey seats, and the whole time my stomach was so sore and rotten, which was made way way worse by the vibrating seats. That was on the weekend, and I just thought it was bad gut, then on the Monday, which was also my last day in college, I was still bad but didnt want to miss the last day. But after an hour bus ride in sweltering heat, I was feeling worse than ever. A few hours later I was rushed into hospital and having my appendix removed.
So that's my memory of Interstellar. I can't hear that films name now without thinking of that whole ordeal. The doctor was shocked how bad it had gotten without rupturing as it was huge and hed never seen one like it, so they actually had me sign a form after the surgery as they wanted to use it to show medical students an example of a really bad appendix. When they weighed me after surgery, I'd lost about 40lbs from it. So I can't watch that film without bringing back memories of that
Oh my goodness! That is quite an awful story 😟
@@MandyCaneLane yeah not nice at all. Spoiled the movie for me permanently. And on top of that, they had a pipe down my throat whilst I was out for the operation for some reason, maybe they used a camera to look in my stomach first, but in doing so they hurt my uvula (the dangly bit at the back of the throat) , which made it swell twice the size. And mine isnt like most, mine is cleft, meaning it looks like an upside down Y. So it's much bigger to begin with. And now it was so big I could choke on it when I talked unless I kept drinking water regularly, which kind of stuck it to the side .or I could stay on my back and it was ok. Had to do that for about 4 days till the swelling went down. Terrible ordeal
My head looks okay shaved but there’s two massive, sticky-out ears attached to it!
I am sure they just add personality ✨️
11:40. You have called Karl, or what he says, "cute" a few times. It's semantics, but it's along the same vein.
As a balding man, I find it interesting that it seems to be the only publicly acceptable physical attribute to ridicule in society. Women without make-up is of course a silly (and misogynist) thing to ridicule. That's the difference.
Hmm... I disagree. I see women get ridiculed for all kinds of things all the time. Being flat chested, or very tall is quite common
@@garethm3242 You should watch 'Jim Jefferies on Jada Pinkett Smith' - he addresses male balding being socially acceptable to mock 🤣
@@MandyCaneLane I've only ever seen women be ridiculed for those things by other women. Never by men, and certainly never in public.
Oh man, in the Steve accent chat you revealed you've never heard of the Wurzels. You've got to experience the Wurzels "Combine harvester" song. Its pure West Country, compressed into levels previously thought to be impossible by the laws of god and man. Its one of the bits of UK culture that seems truly alien to American eyes in my experience.
Because popcorn is mega cheap, it's literally pennies worth and the cardboard bucket is worth more lol.
@@Hellomoto-s2p Mega cheap? Where you buying your popcorn from?
@@laurenceroberts1 For the cinema it is, for the customer it's like a 5000 percent mark up lol.
@@laurenceroberts1 Cheap to produce I think he means.
@@CMDRRustyDog Oh, that makes sense
"Sweet" from Ricky refers to the childlike naiveté of Karl, the perceived innocence of his world view. Maybe this is more of a fella's perspective of "sweet", I dunno. [EDIT: It's also ofc bollocks, as Karl is actually an old man in a young man's body, the irony is noteworthy]
Suzanne might have said to Karl to get rid of the wig incase he had attention from other women
1:03:29. Exemplary!😆🌿🌸
It's interesting to see Mandy's bafflement at the tractor/pirate joke. It's because Americans or people from other countries in general, can't hear accents. I come from the same (awesome) city as Merch and deal with Americans every day and they can't detect my West Country accent. For the record, Mandy, Merchant sounds like a farmer. Hence the jokes.
I'm American and I can easily distinguish Steve's West County accent from Ricky's Redding accent and Karl's Manc accent. But that's because I've watched a lot of British television. Conversely, I bet if you or a lot of Brits came over here you wouldn't be able to tell apart a Georgian accent from a North Carolina or Texan accent. It'd all just sound "southern" to you even though there are differences that you can pick up on if you are familiar with them.
@@DovahFett Absolutely. When I said 'other countries in general', I meant both ways and every country included. For instance, and I've always loved this story, in Austria and Germany, Arnold wasn't allowed to dub his voice in The Terminator, because he has a common farmer accent to Germans/Austrians. So audiences in Austria, his own country, laugh hysterically whenever he's on screen. To them, he sounds a little like Merch. And yet we can't even get close to detecting a farmer accent in Arnold's performance.
Congrats on Rockbusters 😁👏
Thank you! I am still proud! Haha
@@MandyCaneLane when you guessed Kenny for Kenny Loggins, I was openly urging you to guess log in 😅 I was hoping you may have seen the movie Footloose, and knew the title song that he sings
16:40 As long as you've been posting XFM The Ricky Gervais Show on Fridays, I've been imagining it being broadcast on FM radio, not AM radio. Because one, "FM" is in the name (XFM). Two, where I am, AM radio stations have been going out, and FM radio is the big thing (for those who listen to radio). There's still some AM stations around. But not like before. ...... Like, how the world went to digital TV from analog TV (by law in USA), I thought the world would have gotten rid of AM radio stations by now. ..... Now that I'm thinking about it, I could have guessed it was AM, being "talk radio." AM has a lot of talk radio. There's some on FM, but I remember it more on AM.
You know, I never really thought about it!
Totally agree with you re subtitled rather than dubbed. Us folks in the English speaking world are largely sheltered from this, and privileged in that foreign language films are the exception rather than the rule. but I'm still amazed and a bit disappointed in ppl here who decide to watch e.g. Squid Game dubbed, rather than original audio with subtitles. (Unless there's dyslexia or another genuine reason).
Cinemas rely on the food to make their money back. They have to pay to get the films and show them and then sell tickets for like £10, they have to make most of the money back with the food.
If they didn't charge £35 for a trench of popcorn, tickets would cost triple what they do, if not more.
I can survive for 2-3 hours without candy or snacks. Easily. I'd rather pay triple and watch the movie without all the eating noises. Then again I am more than happy to wait a month or two and see it at home instead.
Yess Mandy thank you 29:00 I can't stand dubbed movies because the audio is obviously out of sync I love Italian movies so I mainly watch those and I've managed to learn a good amount of Italian from the subtitles
See the picture Karl sent to Suzanne did him no favours, he took it with his mouth open and she said he looked gormless. If he just shut his mouth she might have had a different reaction, but I'm surprised the guy taking the photo didn't ask him to shut his mouth and smile lol.
Lol! I do not think Karl is capable of closing his mouth 🤭
I totally agree Mandy,
I cannot bear dubs, totally ruins the whole thing as I spend the entire movie thinking about the voice actors rather than the fucking thing.
Flunder: A fubar blunder. It's a perfectly cromulant word.
PS, Portal 2 is one of the best games ever made. Everyone should play it. (So is Portal 1, play that 1st if you haven't already)
4:31 you blundered that Mandy
HAHAHHAA! That's the one!
Cape Town actually has a big problem with baboons. I have up an 8 part documentary series that Bill Bailey did about it, its an interesting watch. "Baboons with Bill Bailey"
Really? I had no idea!
@ yeah, they expanded the city in areas inhabited by baboons. So now theres areas of the city with groups of baboons hanging out. Theres several, but the documentary follows 3 groups of baboons , 1 lives next to a block of flats, the other near a touristy beauty spot where people watch whales and another is in like a park/ woodland area. All because they can steal food from humans easy there. They have a group of security guards tasked with handling them. Its a good watch.
Aye, I usually always prefer subtitles. Except Hong Kong martail arts movies. The plots are often so ridiculous the stupid dubbing often kinda compliments them.
The energy was so dense this episode it had it own gravitation pull, I didn't like the way Ricky said play a record we need to remind you who's in charge and then Karl's Kong silence, and it also annoys me seeing Ricky purposely fans the fire making Karl and Steve fight
If i'm not mistaken Popcorn is one of the most profitable part of the cinema companies finances....
Definitely
I'm British and I cannot understand Ricky half the time, but if I remember the show correctly he addresses that in the next episode. Karl going "my down syndrome son" reminded me they do a clip of what they sent in to the Sony Awards or whatever it was called. I also think they get an exclusive interview with the girls from TATU lmao....
They don't play the Sony clip in the show. People misunderstand this part. The compilation that they play is just something Ricky/Karl put together to highlight how goofy their show is. Steve later jokes that this is what they sent in to the Sony Awards, but they didn't. It would have been a longer five or ten minute compilation with their best content, as they did actually want to win. The clip they play on the next show is just a quick mash-up of absurdity.
I dunno the British dub of Lum The Invader Girl (only 2 episodes made) is pretty special, they captured the anime perfectly and translated the jokes to British sense of humour. I wish it wasn't just a one off thing they did for an event 25 years ago :/ They did a proper English dub the other year and it sucked, just one of those bland American direct translations.
Ricky is infuriating at times.
Is trying to fist bump someone who doesn't have a hand called a stump bump?
Hmmm... perhapsly... 🤔
With like subs v dubs i definitely acknowledge subs is better but i just physically cant focus on whats going on when its subs. Idk why ive never been a bad reader i just cannot do it man everytime ive tried i have not a clue whats going on and i ask a question and my mates say "HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN PAYlNG ATTENTION" APPARENTLY NOT XDDDD
HAHAHHAHA! Fair enough 🤣🤣
The worst is dubbed with subtitles that don't match the words
YESSS

Yep. The RSVP was unrelated though.
@CMDRRustyDog sadly she didn't seem to notice though 😕
@@JoshRead1 Have you seen Mandy's eye for detail? She doesn't miss much. Boom mic!!!!! ;)

2:20 brief Karl Face! You do it so well, Miranda! less than 4 minutes in and 2 Karl Faces, I am spoiled!
A newspaper had a photo of Cher with a waxwork of herself and I can’t remember what the headline was but it should’ve been “Cher and Cher Alike”.
Blunder??
TAHT'S THE ONE! 🤣😅
Considering the amount of constant stick that Steve and Ricky give Karl, I'd say that Karl is well within his rights to never pass on any messages. Karl is an angel compared to the other two.
I disgree 🤣
The show goes to shit from here. Karl soon has a break down and takes time off
I watch dubbed films, I just can't be arsed to read subtitles

And Interstellar is such a bad movie, I went to see it because I loved Inception.... Nope, it was so boring and dumb! Not a movie to see at the cinema. I learned my lesson though with Nolan, most of his movies are overrated, like that WW2 movie he did :/ How do you make a war movie so boring?
