I'm no professional but could be silicone contamination from the sealant. Can't wait to watch the expedition I wouldn't worry to much about the paint so long as she's mechanically sound that's the main thing. Good luck!
Poor Toyota 😂 it would problably done the entire trip without any maintenance. But fun to watch and i hope you travel safe and your channel explodes so you can do the Toyota again proffesionally ;)
Thanks so much for the well wishes @@nemofknfish! Appreciate it, and I hope so too. It’s difficult starting out on UA-cam, but I’m hoping to gain traction because I want to be able to do this full-time! Cheers again and enjoy your adventures
Your original paint was probably a coach enamel like hammerite you can paint a isolator over that but try small sections to see if any reaction occurs you will also get a better finish warming the paint in hot water before application
Damn so sad this happened. 2k paint can be painted over. What propably happened here was the chemicals of the 2k paint reacting with the old paint underneath. You should have painted a 2k epoxy primer as a base between the old and the new paint. Also yellow does not cover verry good due to the pigmentation. Especially over dark spots. So when you paint something yellow, you use a coat of white primer first. Thats easyer to paint yello over than a dark colour.
Great to have an explanation for what happened here, and thanks for the advice on all counts! That’s really useful and I’ll be better armed going into these tasks in future
At the end of the day, it's only a paint job. You will not break down 'cause of this. Shame, that you did miss the ferry. Having said that, it was a good laugh all the way through. Looking forward to yer next adventure. Big shout from a fellow HZJ75 driver from Switzerland !
@@rossbrown6647 dude congrats on deciding to do it! The next instalment of this is much happier news. I ended up using @paintman paints. I highly recommend them. Lmk if you want further info
What happened there is called "crazing" and it's a painters worst nightmare. There are a few different causes for this including incorrect mixing, or layering a fast drying paint over a slow drying paint/ primer. I've had it happen simply due to spraying one brand of automotive paint over a different brand of primer. If I'm using unfamiliar products I always do a test first. You got incredibly unlucky mate.
sucks about the paint - live and learn. only going to get scratched up anyway lol. What are those bars on your hood called? I cant seem to find them anywhere and theyre sweet looking!
@@peterdingley5321 hell yeah man! The bars do look cool. I would do it again if I were to do another build. They are not as practical as I imagined they would be though 😂
Automotive paint is a nightmare. The last car I painted 5 times before getting a decent result free from reaction. To me that's reaction to the previous old paint.
Man glad to know it’s not just us! I will not approach another paint job that uses 2 part paint lightly, know that I know how much of a nightmare it is
I have to ask mate, what’s with the 13amp outlet on the near side front of the habitat?! Btw, my advice is to just go on your trip and forget about the paint until later👍🏻 good luck👍🏻
@ a proper 2k etch primer will etch into the Ali giving the paint something to stick to. I’d use zinc on steel. The ali doesn’t need the corrosion protection steel does.
paint jobs are overrated - color is just a rust-proof coating for the metal. And scratches and dents are travel patina. So don't take the results and the whole story too serious 🙂
Well, kinda. Having done all the work, I still want it to look semi decent. Failing at the last hurdle doesn’t feel good. But yes, ultimately, it’s just paint

Every cruiser suffers from this problem (usually takes 30 years give or take to show up!) that is the windscreen rubber has 2 drainage holes in the bottom so that water that gets between glass and rubber can escape. Anyway it ends up going over metal lip of windscreen surround and rusting behind dashboard in these two spots, then rusts from the inside out. so the holes you have between windscreen and caulked line are the tip of the ice berg. Good news is that it's fixable as long as you can do it yourself! (Which you can) Involes windscreen and dashboard removal to gain access. I did a BJ 70 a couple of years ago so it should be ok for another 30 years! Not that big of a job just time consuming and as you'll know these old trucks are worth it! Incase your wondering that 78 in the background is slowly rusting from the inside as well. Just one of those things, shit happens!
Great info - thanks for the explanation! I did suspect there may be more rot beneath the surface. Thanks for the detailed info. One day I will tackle this job

the lesson from the video is not how to paint a truck, but how to have fun with your mate. cheers and good luck with the trip
Love this sentiment. It encapsulates it exactly. Cheers for the well-wishes!
The original paint was enamel based and the 2k has clashed chemically with it. Happens often unfortunately.
