NASTY surprise during overland build... (bodywork & fitting a winch!)

- With less than two weeks before my ferry departs for Spain, I’m in a race against time to finish my Land Cruiser build and prepare for The Iberian Trail-a 7,000-mile off-road expedition across some of Europe’s toughest terrain. In this episode, it’s all about tackling bodywork, grinding out rust, welding patch panels, and finally installing a much-needed winch to my bull bar.
This 30-year-old Land Cruiser has been through a lot, and the to-do list keeps growing. From custom repairs on the bulkhead to prepping the camper body for paint, this build is a true labor of love. The winch install was no small feat either - watch as we size it up, wrestle with configurations, and bolt it onto the bull bar to make this rig expedition-ready.
Join me as I fight against the clock, tackle some serious rust issues, and push to get this legendary overland build finished in time. If you’re into overlanding videos, off-road adventures, or seeing what it takes to build one of the best traveling cars for overland expeditions, this series is for you. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more updates and the full story behind The Iberian Trail Expedition! 🚙

great video mate, Good look on your big adventure, safe travel's👍
@@Phillsadventures287 thanks mate! Really appreciate the well-wishes 👊
With all the replaced parts it’ll be like Trigger from only fools & horses brush 😂 keep it up mate you’re doing great 💪🏻 as you say as long as you make the ferry you’re golden. Can always patch things up over there👏🏻 oh random maybe take a tent you might want out of the truck for a bit 😁💪🏻
Hahaha got it in one!! Thanks for the well-wishes mate. Appreciate it!! Good point about the tent - I’ll be going through the Picos & that will likely be quite useful!
Enjoyed that Reece..looking forward to the Spanish adventures! Best wishes from Wales 🏴
Thanks for the support as always Kevin!! Glad you enjoyed it
Very nice, son
Hahaha thanks mom and dad
Let’s hope the sump arrives in time… If you end up replacing most of the driveline, nearly all the body panels and that you’ve already chopped the back off your Cruiser is going to be like Triggers broom!
@@mikelambrou4462 hahaha Trigger’s broom indeed! Whether it’ll be the same vehicle or not at the end is a philosophical question. Sump already arrived so we’re good!
@ good news, you may make that ferry after all 🤞
Gotta hope!! Cheers 👊
Do you think your Gonna take a second spare tire????
Good question!! I would like to. I’m currently working out where it would go. Getting a bit worried about the weight 😂 I will try my best though after last time
The winch is fitted wrong
The bolts should be mounted at through the bottom of the bumper
This will ensure you have easy access to the free spool mechanism
Remember the bulk leaks on the landys, they were notorious for it...and my wet right foot and damp smelly carpets!
Yes I remember that too! In the past I’ve driven series & old defenders. They all have the same issues these old 4x4s!
I'm in the market for a winch and this one looks really good! Can you share the amazon link please?
Yeah. These are the guys. You want to select the correct model for your setup, then search that online:
winchmax.co.uk/
You could do with a 75 series pickup cab to achieve the final result... as you have a hzj73 medium wheel base it would be a better truck. I have a bj74 so have a good idea of how it happens!
Do you mean because of length of wheelbase? The extra length would be nice. But having experienced the day-to-day drivability of both a middie like this and 75/78 Land Cruisers, I have to say this is so much nicer to drive. It’s hard to put into words but it handles so much better imo. Can’t say that I’d trade it up now
continuity is a bit all over the place
@@andreteelen6266 continuity?
@ yes you’re last comment is about prepping for paint while is was al ready done in the video.
@ eagle eye! Yes I used a bit of footage from the following day
How are you going to freesplool the winch do you have enough room to pull and twist the freespool handle it looks like you need a winch cradle to be able to rotate 90 degrees to have the handle on top and the pressures when winching going to the chassis legs rather than the front of the bull bar Ah well get it sorted when you get the bodywork done and happy and safe travels
Yeah there’s plenty of room to rotate the handle; will do another video about that when I come to wire it all in. I’m not totally following you about the pressure going to the chassis though, can you clarify? Thanks for the well-wishes - I can’t wait to get out there!
