- This is a 1964 Canadian video; with the NYC Ballet as it looked then, in one of George Balanchine's most odd, yet beautiful modern ballets. He choreographed this in 1954 and shows he was light years ahead of his time. The music is 4 separate pieces by avant garde American composer Charles Ives, and all were composed between 1904 and 1908. Each movement has a theme, if you will, and even though there is no "story" each section has a "meaning," This looks quite different onstage as the lighting is generally darker which gives it an almost nightmarish quality. 1st Mov. "Central Park in the Dark" (Sara Leland and Francisco Moncion, originally Janet Reed and Moncion) 2nd Mov. "The Unanswered Question" (Suki Schorer and Deni Lamont, originally Allegra Kent and Todd Bolender) 3rd Mov. "In the Inn" (Patricia Neary and Arthur Mitchell, originally Tanaquil Leclercq and Bolender again as there were originally more movements, but Balanchine cut them down to 4 for the 1961 revival) and the entire ensemble in the 4th. Mov. "In the Night."

I love "the Unanswered Question". So otherworldly. & I like the quirkiness of "In the Inn'. Ms. Neary's legs go on & on & on!
eu assisto isso a mais de 1 ano todos os dias
By the way do you have a complete recording of La Source, it's one of the Balanchine Works I dream to see.
Yes. With my company but cannot post it.
@@jcliff26 So sad !
Big hug John🎈I know Mr.B was like a father to you. So nice to see this video again. Thank you for sharing.
Weird and wonderful. Thank you.
totally mesmerizing... wow...
Saw it on the Arts network. Great.
Very interesting! And to think it is in 1964!
wow John, an oldie but a goodie! You have amazing stuff. Any chance there is a recording of Picnic at Tintagal anywhere?
This is really wonderful....thanks for sharing. I recently acquired an oil painting from 1965 by Diane Petersen, clearly depicting the "In the Inn" movement from this ballet. Mr Mitchell is in the background, and the female dancer is ID'd on the back as Allegra Kent. Do you know if they ever actually did that movement together? I appreciate any insight you might have. Thanks!
smkita It's always possible Allegra might have done it but he created "The Unanswered Question" section for her (the girl in white who gets carried and never touches the floor) so it's unlikely.
It’s possible but unlikely. Allegra always did her movement, “In the Night” while in this ballet.
This is wonderful ! wonderful_ who were the dancers ? especially the playful pas with Mitchell. Thank you!,
I posted them all. Read below the Published on date.
Francisco Moncion, born in Dominican Republic!
Looks like something from an Edward Gorey illustration.
Claire cool!
its so very odd and funny and cute.
You can recognize the talent of the dancers & even tolerate the music ....and still dislike the ballet. This is the dance where the woman never touches the ground?
It’s only one section from the ballet where she never touches the ground (2nd Mov). I personally love this music. Eerie, but evocative...and I think quite beautiful in a sad-romantic way. The “ideal vision” of a woman...and a man who can never possess her.
Balanchine wanted to be Robbins....sorry..not for me...strange....INSPIRED BY AGE,OF ANXIETY....FOR SURE
Michel Boudot That’s funny. Balanchine admired Robbins but was never envious. Also hen did you see Age of Anxiety? IVESIANA is way more modern and weirder.
Wrong.
