In 1961 I was on a troop ship Oxfordshire as part of 29 field regiment ra when we got to the royal citadel , the c o said enjoy your christmas/Embarcation leave. You are all going on a commando course in 1962. I was on the second course with Maiwand, I passed and stayed with 29/95 until late 1972.
You join the Royal Artillery (24-28 weeks training) when you pass that you go for selection. Then the all arms commando course at RMCTC Lympstone. You are still army but attached to 3 Cdo Brigades..
29 cdo Regt RA are Plymouth based. However they have (7 (Sphinx) Cdo Bty) based at Condor Barracks, Arbroath in Scotland attached to 45 Cdo RM and 148 (Meiktilla) Cdo Bty who are based in Poole with the SBS.
funnybunnytom1; 29 cdo is actually an army unit, has never been a royal marine unit, and accepts both army and accepts both army and royal marine commando's, but is still classified as an army commando unit.
No, This is a n old Regimental one I'll see if there are any new ones from the Regiment. MOTN would be a good time to visit for a few beers at the reunion on 19th July.
You do Basic Training and Trade Training first. 29 Commando is Volunteer so you must be trained already. When you Volunteer you will do pre Commando Training and if good enough will do the All Arms Commando Course to earn the Coveted Green Beret. Good Luck if you decide to give it a go.
Always wanted to join the marines but this has suddenly caught my eye. can you join the artillery and volunteer straight away to do the commando course or do you have to serve a few years first ?
@ollie6655 We always get stick and give it back, that's what its all about:) Not just Guns, but a few trades same as Royal Really. If interested give it a go, nothing to lose..
Are you officially a member of the RM once you've done the all arms commando course? or do you only put on the green beret when you're working with the RM? (this isn't a diss, I'm very interested)
