Very interesting... I believe this is one of the issues holding back progress in the igboland. When mind's are broaded when can achieve higher economy results.
Women were treated as properties(i.e when a man died, his brother inherited his property and his wife). It is an undigested occurrence for a woman to inherit her father's property. the belief is that she will be 'sold' to a man and the property becomes that of her husband. Notwithstanding the application of the repugnancy test, patriarchy has eaten too deep into the Igbo culture at the detriment of the girl child. Thank you for this Dr. Cheluchi. Public enlightenment is a step in the right direction.
Women were treated as property not in all parts of Igboland don't let Nolloywood movies confuse you...which woman will agree to be a property of a dead husband's brother....uncle inheriting properties when the woman had kids for her husband(even female)...never in my life have I see such in Igboland(Imo state).
A woman's property is in her married family's homeland, natural and not just Igbo law and no hell can change that. Go and drag your father's properties from your husband's house with your brothers and see if your will still remain on your neck.
Ada Igbo Dr. Onyemelukwe . the issue of inclusion of Women for Land inheritance in Igbo land , is very serious one and controversial . Because of cultural beliefs and nature of this matter in Igboland . As you know , my highly learned Legal Sister , that Igbo culture and laws , are drawn from Mosaic Laws , Which by God's injunctions confer ownership of lands in Israel as well as in Igbo land to male Children . It is commonsense in Igbo culture to accommodate unmarried or divorced Igbo daughters into their original Homes.
So women should inherit ancestral land then pass it to who, her husband family? It's not as if Igbo land is even one of the largest landmasses in Nigeria. Nigerian societies/religions are patriarchal.., if an Igbo woman marry a non-Igbo man, in the future what will become of the ownership/right of the land the Igbo women inherit?
Good sister, are you not discriminate d as an igbo in Nigeria while not sue Nigeria to court. Am not saying injustice is good. But you should understand that igbo is one but law of LANDS varies from one village to another. From example am from AMAINYI IN IMO STATE WIDOWS HAVE RIGHTS TO INHERIT ALL HER HUSBAND BELONGS. BUT LAND IN THE VILLAGE BELONGS TO YOUR BELOVED BROTHER. YES WHEN MARRIED TO ANOTHER FAMILY, YOUR HUSBAND INHERITED LAND ALSO FROM HIS FAMILY, THIS WAY YOUR BELOVED BROTHERS WIFE IS ALSO COINHERITOR JUST AS YOU AT YOUR HUSBAND PLACE. BUT CITY PROPERTIES OF YOUR PARENTS SHOULD BE SHARE EVEN BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR BELOVED BROTHER. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE .CALL ME 0032495852280 MY NAME IS UCHENWA .
Which law? Yoruba and Hausa Nigeria law. You guys are mad. Women have no modicum of right over their father's inheritance save their husband's. Nasty to even think of. This is not about Nigerian politics it is about a sensitive intergenerational landmark tradition.

It should go to a brother or sister or a cousin or back to her village.
If I buy land and property, it is mine. However a male in the family can still contest this. Is this true?
My writing might not be correct please I am igbo
Sọ ofu nwa ka o nwere??? This is one tradition Ndị Igbo should throw away so fast.
Which tradition should be thrown away?
You are mad.
