    Can you imagine if they used this movie as a reference to make even MORE live action movies based on Disney villains?
    "Ursula" could have King Triton as the villain (who am I kidding? They are SO going to do that)...
    "Hades" could have Zeus as the villain...
    "Frollo" could have Esmeralda as the villain...
    "Cruella" could have Roger as the villain...
    "Facilier" could have Mama Odie as the villain...
    "Gothel" could have the King and Queen (Rapunzel's parents) as the villain...
    "Gaston" could have Maurice as the villain (the Beast is too obvious)...
    "Tremaine" could have Cinderella's father as the villain...
    For "Jafar", they could easily just adapt "Twisted" into a movie...
    "Scar" could have Mufasa as the villain, but that would be too obvious, so how about Rafiki?

      Wouldn't Zeus as a villain have been more accurate in actual mythology?

      From what I remember, HERA was the villain in the original Hercules story. Although I don't know much about Greek mythology, so I'm not sure how much of a jerk Zeus was...

    If they had based it on someone else or created an all new "villain", it would have been a great movie, albeit a bit derivative of Frozen.
    But Maleficent's name means "Bringer of Evil". She delights in breaking the spirit of Prince Phillip, she has a kingdom of goblins, and she calls upon the powers of hell to transform herself into a dragon. Angelina Jolie was born to play her. If you are going to do a story about Maleficent's past, it should be much darker. Like a Death Note style origin or something. Where someone finds a way to do what they think is good and become irrevocably evil as a result. I wish I knew what Paul Dini's version of the story would have been like.

      Paul Dini? Your telling me there was a writer attached to this movie, before they hired Linda Wooverton the writer of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland? This is new, and your damn right I would want to see that script!

    • @WinterGirlRules
      @WinterGirlRules 8 років тому +1

      Tyler R If I remember correctly, Linda Woolverton, who had also worked on Disney's original Beauty and the Beast, was collaborating with Paul Dini. I can only speculate what happened, but by the time trailers were released, his nae was no longer on it. I can only assume that he was like, "Maleficent is an unrepentant villain, what's going on here?" and as he noticed them going more for the misunderstood hero angle, I think he was like "I'm out."

      Oh, so it was suppose to have two writers, and the one sane writer dropped out because the film was going down the wrong path. Still, I'd pay top dollar's to see what his original ideas were.

      @WinterGirlRules 8 років тому +1

      Tyler R Me too. If anyone could tell an amazing origin story for Maleficent and still be true to the character, while at the same time being accessible to all ages, it's Paul Dini.

      OH YEAH! I mean, he won my respect by just Batman, everything else is just icing on the cake. Damn, I wish I lived in the universe where his version came around, because I am sure it would be have been great. It wouldn't have been an insult to Eleanor Audley like this trash.

    There's two things about "Wicked" -- the musical at least-- that did slightly alter the original story of "The Wizard of Oz," and that was the animal suppression act.
    First, "Wicked" showed animal-people being forced back into their primal roots where they walk on all fours and don't use words to communicate. And it's during this suppression act that we're introduced to the Cowardly Lion as a cub. Yet, when we're introduced to the Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard of Oz," he talks perfectly as a human would, and in the case of the MGM movie, he walks on two legs.
    Second, "Wicked" showed the origin of the Tin-man being a typical nervous guy name Boq who Elphaba turned into into tin after her sister tried to make him lose his heart metaphorically for Glinda but accidentally made him loose his heart literally. However, L. Frank Baum's official origin of the Tin-man is that his real name was Nick Chopper, and the East Witch intentionally turned him into Tin because he was flirting with a female munchkin that was either her servant or the live interest of a jealous male munchkin that paid the East Witch to do the job.

    I'm probably gonna be on a very small minority here, but I love the original animated version AND I loved this one!
    To me this one wasn't intended to be a true spin-off or a remake of the original, it's mean't to be an original re-telling of it because quite frankly, I actually realise whilst watching the original that there isn't really much to change especially in the story.
    And most of what they do in this version makes this one much stronger and more impressive.
    Even making Stefan the villain I find intriguing especially with how insane and diabolical he can be, possibly making him one of the cruelest Disney villains.
    And obviously no need to talk about how outstanding Angelina's performance was because everyone's talked about it enough already.
    So yeah I love both versions..

    The change from dying to a deep sleep is actually a change back to the original fairy tale. In that story, sleeping beauty would be asleep for 100 years. Therefore disney took a spin on the classic tale from the beginning. Here, it is going back to its original roots

    See, I wasn't the hugest fan of the original Sleeping Beauty (mostly because I hated Aurora.) so I kind of liked the twists in Maleficent. Really? I thought it was genuinely terrible, and even pretty misogynistic, to turn Maleficent into a poor innocent woman that is only evil because of a MAN, especially because in the original Maleficent is the bright spot along with the fairies, all kickass women on both sides. Phillip is a good royal that does something, but he comes in pretty late, and Aurora... well, a cardboard cutout has more character (which also is true of Maleficent).

    • @xgray2012
      @xgray2012 9 років тому +2

      Carsen Darling Hey, join the club. But for what's it worth. At least in the original version of Sleeping Beauty, it was more focused on the three good fairies being the stronger independent characters and Maleficent being the absolute threat and the movie titular character and Prince Philip being the sidekicks. And that's actually a good thing. This movie doesn't have a single clue of what it wanted to do with its' actual story after the christening scene. But yeah, seriously, this movie really fucked up by turning the three good fairies into the three stooges and the fact that Maleficent doesn't turn into a dragon in the live-action version.

    My biggest beef with the movie is that they tear down everyone to make Maleficent the best by default. Making someone the best by default is NEVER a good idea. It also capitalizes on the ideology that good female characters are full of angst, surround themselves in grit and dark colors, and 'we don't need no man because we'we independend' attitude.

    Maleficent is nothing but a beautiful tale. I was so thrilled watching it. The Scene were Angelina plays against her own daughter (since every child was to shit scared to get close) cracked me up... For some reason i found the comment. "I don't like children. Go away" so utterly funny i could not hold back the laugh. love it.

    Making Stefan the villain kind of seems like blaming the victim. If they were going to make a good guy the villain, it might have been more interesting if they had made it Aurora. It would make just as little sense, but at least it would be surprising :).

    This movie really pissed me off. Why not tell us how she became bad instead of totally replacing the original characters? I mean they change the curse so it isnt death and her love saves her? Are you kidding me? They ruined Phillip who is Disney's best prince and turned into the faeries into negligent idiots and why take away the gift of song when you have such a great one from the original? I hated it

  • @jetisbae2164
    @jetisbae2164 6 років тому +6

    What I hated about it were mostly the feminazis calling it great for showing a strong woman and Aurora not being saved by a man...yeah sure, because the fairies being the heroes for the most part of the original was soooo sexist I guess, getting triggered for Aurora having a love interest or being barely in the movie, I could say Sleeping beauty is like Zelda, the title is the point of the story and doesn't reflect who's the protagonist, I sometimes think feminists just hate female characters having love interest

    Yeah, I agree. Maleficent is beautiful with the CGI and Angelina Jolie was terrific as Maleficent. But, I don't think her performance and the CGI effects are enough to safe what I think is half-assed writing. The whole thing feels like a fanfiction than a movie. I also thought the movie is going to be about the why and how Maleficent became evil, but nope. Was lied to as they pretty much said that the animated classic is a lie and bad and their version is better and true. Making Maleficent, the most iconic Disney villain of all time, an anti-hero instead of an evil villain. That to me is kind of an insult to the Disney fans. Although, I don't think this movie is bad at all, but I don't think it's great either. Like him, I think it's meh. Though, I perfer the animated classic over this live-action rehash.

    I REALLY liked this movie. I think the changes they did are very good. I don't really care if it isn't totally loyal to the 1959's Sleeping Beauty because, to be honest, I don't think that version is really good, the only thing I like about it is Maleficent (she has always been my favorite villain). And in 'Maleficent' I really enjoyed her back story, and the little (very little) development that Aurora has (cause in the 1959 version, she has none) and I also liked king Stefan, I don't see him as a villain, he is just very (VERY) paranoid. I just didn't like Phillip (he doesn't do anything) and the fact that Maleficent didn't turn into a dragon herself. I would give a 8.7/10.

    Just throwing this out there, what if it is what really had happened? As king, Stephen could command the story/records to be told and written as they were in the animated movie. Where as it was shown in "Maleficent", could have been what really happened. It was told by Aurora in that.

      Not really, no: Maleficent's story is a flimsy Villain Excuse story. Sounds like Aurora's deluding herself on Maleficent's character.

      If the fanfiction is the true story than why it never present as such in 1959? Remember Sleeping Beauty is inspired by Charles Perrault version and a bit from Grimm Brothers version. If you said 1959 is some sort propaganda then is the previous version of perrault, grimm and even bastile is a propaganda? Oh suddenly some american writers in 21 century know the true version of the story rather than it being a fairytale from France n italy? Lol

    Why they made King Stephan a villain he was a jolly, fun-loving and wacky king who was a nice guy that made us love him in the original and find him funny it hurts that they made evil and detestable, not only that but they made the enjoyable three good fairies into jokes instead of the main characters who made us laugh without being comic relief sidekicks and helped a-lot in the movie. Finally why they made Maleficent the hero I preferred her being pure evil and a true villain than the main protagonist Maleficent as a evildoers is much better than her being a good guy.

    I just got done watching Maleficent and I thought it was pretty good. In a way it reminded me a lot of the tv show Once Upon a Time. I like this movie and I also like the origonal Sleeping Beauty. But there are a few things I agree with you on. Phillip was practically useless and the fairies annoyed my to death! Also, I think that it would have been better if the antagonist was the rivalry between the two lands rather than King Stephen. But I could pretty much see past those things and enjoy the film.

    I saw this opening night, and my best friend and I were both happy enough with it that we seriously debated catching the last showing that night to see it a second time. If she didn't have obligations the next morning, we would have.
    Even almost two weeks later, that impression has not diminished, and for me, it's probably because I see it not as a continuation of the original, but as its own alternate universe, especially considering some of the changes they employed (like the very end, and anyone who has seen it knows exactly what I am talking about). It makes it easier to accept some of the drastic character changes. It also allows the original 1959 Maleficent to remain this pure evil...force of nature, while the new one---while no less dangerous---is able to be more sympathetic, even heroic.
    They're both Maleficent to me, just different versions of her. And regarding Stefan, it's the same way. The original one, we don't really get to see much of him, but this one? He is more established and fleshed out, and again, an alternate universe means an alternate version of him.
    My main complaints were Aurora and Phillip STILL being bland as water, and minor things in the story that could have been better tweaked or explained, but overall, I went in (admittedly with low expectations, considering, as pointed out, similar "action fairy tale" films recently) with hopes to see a kickass movie with a remarkable female character in the lead, with a story that was at least easy to follow and enjoy for what it was. I was not disappointed. In fact, I cannot remember the last time I laughed so much or cried so hard while watching the same film.
    Was it as good as it could have been? No, but for what we got, it was fun, entertaining, heart-wrenching, and Angelina Jolie was perfect in the lead role. And honestly, what we got was still VERY creative and brilliant in comparison to most other films in the same category.

    SPOILERS
    It think some people may try to give this movie too much praise when it comes to how the ending is done. Remember how the act of true love in Frozen was between Ana and Elsa and everyone was like "Finally it's not a random prince guy!", well they pulled that again as it is Maleficent who wakes up Aurora. Listen Disney, I get that you wanna ride the "That princess don't need no man" train after Frozen's success, but please don't try to make that the new trope in every new movie, variety is the spice of life. If you wanna throw in a dashing prince go ahead and if you want to make it more about female love then do that too, just don't have it be one or the other because I don't want this to be the ending of every Disney new movie.

    I actually just got back from watching the movie with my older sister, and I have to agree with you, Animat. The movie's visuals look amazing, and if the movie was just about Maleficent becoming evil, then the movie might have been better. I think that some of the characters were bland, but at least Diaval and Maleficent were good characters. Angelina Joile did a good job at being terrifying, and it was still a good movie. And the song in the end credits scared the living day lights out of me. But I'm a 12 year old girl. You don't have to take my word for it.

Also, did you know that other fairy tale heroes are antagonized like Peter Pan in Once Upon A Time or Jack from Jim Henson's Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story? In fact that second fairy tale I mentioned was even made fun of in an episode of Rick And Morty So King Stephan isn't the first fairy tale hero turned villain.

    I both loved and hated the new Maleficent film. It gave Aurora's and Maleficent's characters and in depth upgrade, taking Aurora from standard princess to a more relatable character and Maleficent from and evil witch to a complex character. But I do wish they had kept the fairies characters and made Philip more then two bit filler he turned into. Maleficent still should have become a dragon and she still should have died by Philip's sword after she took out the crazy king. I think it would have been a better story if it had.

    I liked the movie. I have to say, I enjoyed it because of what it did with the story. Don't get me wrong, I like the original, but with all the current movies trying to explain why the villain became evil, this one is different. And it does it in a believable way. All legends and rumours come from somewhere. The idea of Sleeping Beauty as a case of Chinese Whispers is really creative, I thought. A story passed on from generation to generation that sounds less and less like the original.
    What's more, I thought it was brave of them to change so much of the original, if only because they knew a lot of fans would not approve.
    On a final note, I thought Angelina Jolie was amazing in her portrayal of Maleficent!

    I agree with most of the things. I don't think they meant to tell us that Sleeping Beauty was a lie. its a different perspective, and perspective usually based on opinions and can have exaggerations. I'd like to think of this film as someone's (or Aurora, in the movie's case) own opinion, not the actual story.
    but i like this film. not a great film, but good enough to be entertaining. for some reason, i like all 3 Disney's live action fairy tales while i despise the hell out of every other studios' films. i think Disney knows how to make fairy tales more than other studios, given their deep history of adapting them.

    you want to hear something interesting. last year in my myths and legends class in highschool, i came across a fairy tail that i believe was based off maleficent if she was at the baby shower. she was disgusted on the gifts the three fairies were giving Aurora with the idea that with these gifts giving her a life without hardship, trial, sadness, and tragedy, she would never live a real life. so to rebel from this possibility, she gave Aurora the gift of reality and hardship so she can live a life worth living.
    also i feel like this movie is a rebellion against the fairy tale genera with the fairies being incapable of treating Aurora with them not using magic which can be all they are capable of, the princes true love kiss not working to stop the curse and the need of passionate feelings and a asking for forgiveness to break the curse, and the idea that maleficent is merely the bad that is necessarily for the world to be in balance rather then being simply the evil of the world.
