I needed an amp repair channel to fill the void the Guitologist left. Once he went off the deep end I couldn’t keep watching. I love the content even if it’s not intended for me/us. Gives me a better idea of what amps to avoid.
Correct as I would watch his channel but he did go off the deep end and I no longer waste my time with his channel. Does not hurt that this Gentleman knows his shit as well !
Its kinda surprising the "amps to avoid" thing is something so many of us take away from these videos. I have to say the main thing I take away before that, its that Lyle knows his shit. I would trust him with my amps, no question.
Dude turned into a crackpot. He had some very interesting content back in the day, but channels like this are much higher quality if you're looking to pick up some tricks for working on these things
Humble and transparent work gives you the best trust for the customer and public... Your good work is guaranteed for years to come... Thanks for everything
Hi Lyle, love your channel! I swapped the OT transformer in my '66 blackface bassman head with an Altac Lansing Peerless from a '70's radio kit my dad had that incorporated 2 6L6's. I like the tone, but both OT's sound great...I prefer the Peerless though lol, thank you very much! What do you think of Mercury magnetics ....specifically their oversized power transformers? ( I am sure the different OT are different sounding) Thanks again for all of the great videos you put out! An incredible library of guitar tube amp repair!❤
Bummer that it needs a new power transformer. It could make an interesting video if you popped the covers off the Drake and pointed out what about it isn't up to snuff, if possible.
I had one of these back in '87-88. I was never very happy with it. It was not the Marshall of my dreams. It's also equally possible that I wasn't the guitarist of my dreams, either.
I think my jubilee does the same thing every once in a while, some hum while on standby. Not all the time and once standby off, hum goes away and the noise level isnt anything out of the ordinary given the gain and volume it puts out in normal use. I would go as far as saying it's fairly quiet, even with the original caps ;-) Havent really paid any particular attention to it and i think i've considered it to be vibration and sound not coming from the speaker. Or i'm confusing that vibration to some other amp.
Field strength at 6 feet for pickups has to be swamp the pre amp tubes . I have had tubes pick up at 6 inches for a good transformer . That power transformer looks like a big problem .
Yep, I picked up an early Marshall class 5 and a Fender Pro Jr v1 on Reverb very reasonable price, both worked fine out of the box (Mick and Dan at That Pedal Show have been a bad influence) to alternate as my "dry" amp in a home low volume wet-dry-wet rig. They've been just sitting for months while we remodel the house (wife retired last year) Both are going in to get electrolytics checked and/or replaced before I fire them up again. Besides for a beginner/hack like me the Boss Katana 50 watt gets me by, still have a ways to go before getting fancy with a W-D-W rig.
Hi, Alan here from NewZealand. (Anvil Amplifiers) Have you thought of trying to add a copper tape shielding band to the transformer core? Could be done without completely removing the Iron from the chassis, just the end bells whilst still in position.
In my experience copper, steel, and aluminum all have marginal abilities to stop transformer noise fields. It takes mumetal, which is outrageously expensive and difficult to work with.
What is a "acceptable" field size of a power transformer? i have one that i need turn the guitar 90 degree in relationship to the trainsformer or take some distance.

I got really pissed at Brad on many occasions!! Brad and lyle are worlds apart when it come to working on amps.
@@russellesimonetta3835 Absolutely as in two different worlds!

Love the LED crunch sounds.

I would love to see this myself.
But that would let out all of the magic mojo! ;)
I don't have time to do that kind of thing right now, and odds are there would be nothing visible to show.

I have a 25/50 that I haven't played in 10 years. I am a little afraid to power it up just to be heartbroken.
Love mine… OG owner.

I've been on the hunt for a vintage-ish Marshall... and I'm starting to think if I get one and don't send it to you, it could blow up on me!
Well, they can. Any valuable vintage amp should be taken to a good tech for an evaluation. Protect your investment.

@@PsionicAudio Yes but the copper band collects the field and short circuits it. I have had some success adding them to PTs in tube amps.
I am curious to know what specific issues the mid-eighties Drake trannies had. I had always thought they were very good quality transformers.
Yeah that is interesting
I've seen a lot of transformer failures in '80s/'90s Drakes in Marshalls and Voxes. 30-40 years isn't a bad run, but they are showing their age.
@@PsionicAudio That is good to know, thank you.
Keep it up as you had some links for some sex sites in the comments LOL! Means you are on your way LOL! Enjoy the videos very much and take care...

3 feet or so with pickups (should be less, but I wanted to include 5150 owners). Shouldn't be in the preamp or audible when in standby.
@@PsionicAudio Cool! Thanks Lyle!
