  • So Chicken Run: Dawn of The Nugget releases soonish. And marketing is very much going! Being shown off at two seperate film festivals, reviews of the movie have already released and though I'm hearing high numbers, and happy people. The actual words they're saying, the comparisons they bring up and the legacy of the original that they refer to.. brings up some lingering negative thoughts in my mind. And so, going off of JUST the early reviews of the movie, I wanted to share my thoughts on the potential downsides of this upcoming movie. And whether it was even needed in the first place...

...The original Chicken Run is the highest grossing stop motion animated movie of all time. So maybe it's not a surprise a sequel is being hashed out. Let's just wonder if Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget will soil that legacy.

Amazing how it's been exactly 23 years since the first Chicken Run. It's nice to see people are still making stop-motion movies. It's an underrated medium because it's so expensive and time consiming to make, but it's really cool too.

It's the fact that my jaw dropped after seeing the return of Mrs. Tweedy, I am even more excited about Chicken Run's upcoming sequel! She's back, and she's clearly got a grudge against all chickenkind. It does sound odd hearing completely different voice actors though.

Technically it's not an Aardman movie (if it was, they wouldn't have let this happen, because it's by both DreamWorks AND Aardman, Netflix took over and made dumb changes. Aardman would never make those bad changes if it was their movie). In my opinion, it's one of the best DreamWorks movies, and I agree that they should do something like maybe a show or appear in extra shorts? But a full sequel didn't need to happen. Trust me, Netflix is all to blame

Hi Dazz, I actually managed to go to the premiere in London last month so I can weigh in quite a bit on it.
So, like many I was rather skeptical going in, not only was I worried how long it has been since the first, but also all the cast changes.
So yes, there are some similarities and differences from the first. And no it was never going to be as good as the original, how can you improve on perfection?
But I think it's a pretty fantastic film. It doesn't try to undermine the original, and doesn't try to copy it's exact style. The characters are pretty similar for the most part, but I would say it gives some interesting character change for Ginger and more specifically her world view since becoming a free chicken and a mother.
The film is also very funny, practically every joke got the whole audience laughing. Maybe not as clever as the first film, but still some great moments.
The cast I was pretty happy with. The new actor for Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) does a great job, still it's a shame Julia Sawalha didn't return (who knows if we'll ever find out the full reason why). And the rest old and new are all really good, the most noticeable voice change I would say is David Bradley as Fowler, and that's not because he does a bad job, it just sounds a bit different.
As for how dark the film is? Well I was pleasantly surprised they kept an edge in the film, there's several rather creepy scenes in there, especially towards the climax. There's also some foreshadowing jokes that are pretty dark which I was impressed by.
At the BFI event, Peter Lord and Nick Park were there as well as other Aardman creatives, and they mentioned that the idea for this film was originally floated around back in 2014, so less of a gap in reality when you take that into account. They also talked about how the creation went from a father/daughter focussed story to mother/daughter, which makes perfect sense. They capture the similarities between Ginger and her daughter Molly really well, and how they clash but in a way that never makes you dislike either of them, you can fully understand everything they do, again unlike some other animated mother/daughter dynamics. And yes Ginger is a strong female protagonist, but the film doesn't need to pat itself on the back about that.
Also I have to give a shout out to the music, there's some excellent theme and variation from the first film's soundtrack, and while John Powell didn't return, Harry Gregson-Williams did, so no worries there.
The only thing I'm worried about with this film is that Netflix will shove it on their streaming service and not give it the proper cinematic release it deserves.
I don't want to spoil anything about the film, but I think it was great, and makes me happy it exists, something I can't always say for sequels.

it is VERY wierd for a movie to have a sequel 23yrs later and then start to replace voice actors that aged...because...23yrs. Also, today's reviewers that get the 'special treatment' and go see it with other reviewers tend to lean on the artistic value of the movie, which the normal people do not care about. Also, they tend to get payed to "make nice words" and well highlight some negatives, but balance them out with a LOT of positive.

From what I see, %90 of the movies that got a sequel didn't need a sequel anyway. A sequel is usually made to add more to the plot and expand their universe. The biggest problem is that they usually don't follow the atmosphere of the first movie. But I kinda trust in this one to be atleast good enough on it's own.

Okay, I have so many mixed feelings about this as a huge Chicken Run fan, and also a huge fan of both DreamWorks AND Aardman. People forget that Chicken Run is a DreamWorks movie, just as Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken and Trolls are. It's not technically Aardman, just because Aardman animated for it. I am very suspicious that they don't have much control over the sequel and are being forced to do it because of Netflix. Trust me, if Aardman had any control over the movie they wouldn't allow this to happen! Let's face it, we saw the new design for Mrs Tweedy when they brought her back, she looks younger and is wearing more makeup. When Aardman designed her, they didn't want her to be the "sexy" villain, they just wanted her to look like an ordinary middle aged woman who's obsessed with money and doesn't care about her chickens at all. DreamWorks mostly came up with the story, but Aardman came up with the designs and animation. I don't think either company wanted to bring her back as a "cute baddie" villain, in fact I don't think they wanted to bring her back at all. PLEASE *DO NOT TAKE THIS SEQUEL SERIOUSLY!* IT IS A *KNOCK OFF!* It's a knock off that's been taken over by Netflix and directed by someone who had nothing to do with the first movie, nor paid attention to it. (I bet I could write a better fanfiction sequel than they did.)
Also, the fact that DreamWorks and Aardman didn't get along and don't have any partnership made Chicken Run an easy target because both companies technically didn't have full ownership of the movie (it's different for Flushed Away, in which DreamWorks has full ownership, and is also based off a book). Not only did they fire most of the actors and actresses, they changed their characters too. I'm mostly mad that they got new voices for the characters who didn't need them, but I'm also mad that they're making Molly a main focus instead of Rocky or Ginger. Like, I would appreciate it if Molly was still a chick and why does the main character always have to be a child or teen? What's wrong with having an adult protagonist? Adults have flaws and make bad decisions, and Rocky's the biggest example in DreamWorks, as a flawed main character. Also, you said that the movie scared you as a kid and the first movie wasn't meant to be that much for kids in the first place, so why are they making the sequel more kid-like? I mean, when they did it with the Croods New Age, it worked, but it doesn't work with Chicken Run! I know the first Croods had a lot of symbolism, but Chicken Run was much darker and had much more heavy topics than the first Croods movie. Again, it also doesn't work because it's all new people working on the sequel for Chicken Run. They only got Nick park to return because they had the money to make him return, and he's such a successful animation director. It's not just most of the voice cast they replaced, they got other people who are doing the writing and directing too, and are literally ruining it. This is literally someone's Chicken Run fanfiction that they had enough money to make into a movie!

I watched the sequel just yesterday I liked it but that's it. I'd give it 6.5/10. It was not something I needed but like you said it was nice to see the after-story. Ginger and Rocky's child was a nice addition. yeah, Rocky's voice changing was noticeable but it didn't bother me too much and I didn't even notice Ginger's voice had changed that much, I just figured the actress was 20 years older so that's why she sounds a little different. did I need a sequel no but I'm still happy to see these characters and I'll do it again if they make a 3rd but I kind of don't want that. not every movie needs a franchise. I do like Ginger's PTSD about the whole thing though and everyone's reaction to seeing Mrs. Tweety again was great you really felt the emotion in those scenes

I question some of their casting decisions however. I get why they replaced Mel Gibson, but there was no need to replace Julia Sawalha and Benjamin Whitrow, and what was the point of bringing back Nick and Fletcher if they weren't going to bring back Timothy Spall and Phil Daniels?

I personally missed the voice of Mel Gibson as Rocky. Mel Gibsons absence was the most notable since he's the most famous. But I also noticed the different voices of Ginger, and the rats Nick and Fletcher. Another thing I don't like about about Dawn of The Nugget is that they made Rocky an idiot. His only contribution to the movie is when they get stuck in a corn silo and Rocky gets them out by making popcorn. Which is something he did to de-escalate a conflict Ginger and their daughter Molly at the start of the movie The movies strong points are the conflict between Ginger and Molly about Molly wanting to leave the island eventually she runs away and gets caught by Mrs Tweety's goons. It was also a good decision to bring back Mrs Tweety for the sequel I rather enjoyed Chicken Run Dawn of The Nugget.

I know Ginger was the main character last time, I just hope that Rocky doesn't just stand around, he had his personality too. And also, I do miss the old voices. And the 1st movie can get really sad at times, I wonder if this movie will have that.

I was at the film festival and honestly it felt more like a whole new film than a sequel, It barely felt like the same story. Don’t get me wrong, the visuals were great but really the plot had me losing interest.

What I can't stop wondering about now is who's chicks were those at the ending of the first movie? The trailer for the sequel makes it look like they only have one kid, which I suppose may not be the case, but there were only two roosters in the first movie so they're either Rocky's or Fowler's, unless some other rooster wandered into their midst's.
That being said, I've just noticed at the ending where Bunty is pushing the other chicken on a swing the tree says Bunty & Fowler on it in a heart so... maybe they're their chicks. XD

watched it, was enjoyable but leaves me on a lot of questions and the movie felt quite boring without the og cast plus the plot was practically the same as the first and it had many questions that were left unanswered like spoilers:
where was mr Tweedy? he got divorced but why did she keep his name?, how did mrs tweedy find a husband that looks exactly like Mr Tweedy and how did she do it in the same location as the chickens new location?

It's always challenging trying to make a moives franchise. Unlike other types of stories moives in most cases are stand alone stories.
I think the original is fine how it is. If the people who own it want to do something different, they shoot reboot it and talk how modern technology is now used in soecity. They can also take out the lier reveal plot.

To be honest, I'm certainly interested in the sequel, but I'm also cautious. Two french film franchises released sequels after long hiatuses (Taxi 5 and Le Visiteurs 3) and both were letdowns with a somewhat tired feel to them.

ok, as much as I think this movie isn't really needed and as much as I hate the unnecessary recasting for Ginger, I can't deny I'm excited to see Ginger and Rocky as parents. They were such polar opposites in the first movie and I loved seeing their relationship develop, so I'm incredibly curious to see what parenting shows about their characters(even tho they're probably going to be completely different since both movies have different writers AND directors)

Please take anything said in the Guardian review with a heaped tablespoon of salt. The article has had to be revised multiple times after the reviewer seemingly believed that the majority of the film was CGI. Yes, the clean up job on the film has made it look very polished but it is still a stop-motion film using traditional stop-motion methods at its core.

Saying that x or y movie did or didn't need a sequel is such a silly take because, unless they're adapting a preexisting story that for whatever reason needs to be split in more than one movie, literally no piece of media "needs" a sequel.
