@@BinaryDood It's great stuff, really evocative, and a large part of why I love Marathon so much. Here's some more, in case you haven't seen it: marathon.bungie.org/temp/cmullins.html
I agree with the too much swimming, especially at the beginning we’re I expected a more open flat area, but still, Marathon 2 Durandal is the best in the series (I think so).
btw I love how the art gets better with each game. The "cutscenes" in the first game were laughable in hindsight, though charming, but by the end of Infinity sometimes they looks awe inspiring. Thank you for getting me into these games, this video was top notch and can't wait for Infinity which is whoooooole other plane of existence,
I agree with you on swimming. Durandal was the last one I played because of that, I got lost so many times. spoilers having played Infinity first to Durandal I had no idea that some of the events unfolding were throwbacks to the previous games and was reliving sort of a timeloop. That made me question lots of things and made me confused, like destroying Durandal's computer out of nowhere
I've got a background in theoretical physics, and I've always wondered where the "displacing matter out of the universe" interpretation of Durandal's ultimate goal comes from in the Marathon lore community. I'm thinking it probably originated on the Marathon Story website from someone who doesn't really know what they're talking about, and then it just kept getting parroted, since it doesn't make sense on multiple fronts. 0. First off, let's just ignore the fact that there's nothing indicating that our universe has a positive curvature, ie that its ultimate fate is a big crunch (everything so far points to a flat universe, with an expansion rate that asymptotically reaches zero over infinite time, leading to a heat death scenario instead), and assume that in the Marathon universe, this is the case. 1. Assuming that the laws of physics largely work the same, displacing mass out of the universe is just an absurd notion. If this was possible, then why not just displace oneself out of it? Even if the crunch could be prevented, all that would eventually happen is just heat death (or a big rip (actual cosmology term)), though the timescale for that would ofc be hugely increased, but nonetheless - death. 2. There's more to why this is dumb: the method of displacing said mass is proposed as a black hole sucking that mass into itself. The problem is that no mass is destroyed by falling into a black hole, so you're moving exactly zero energy out of the universe. When the black hole eventually evaporates due to Hawking radiation, the mass will have been converted to fundamental particles, but the total energy will be the same (and in the context of general relativity, mass has no special place as energy, it's equivalent to other forms of energy in how it affects spacetime). So the imagined mechanism just doesn't work. 3. The proposed amount of stars required to subvert a big crunch would be, according the number Tycho mentions, on the order of tens of thousands. This is a LUDICROUSLY PATHETIC amount of mass on the scale of the universe. A single supermassive black hole can have a mass of the order of billions of solar masses. Galaxies average hundreds of millions of stars, but can go up to hundreds of TRILLIONS. And the estimated number of extant galaxies is about 2 trillion - IN JUST THE OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE. Kirkpatrick had taken a bunch of astronomy, and even back then most of these scales were more than well-known. So: no, what Durandal's plan most likely was, was to create a black hole (using the thousands of stars) in the hopes of being able to tunnel through it into a white hole in an adjacent universe. Note that the possibility of any of this is... not very likely. No serious cosmologist believes this, white holes or this kind of parallel universe to be possible. But, for the sake of the story, this is a concession that at least makes a lick of sense. Durandal's reason for wanting the space-folding tech of the Jjaro is to facilitate this design, and also for just having neat tech at his disposal - if a hyperintelligent AI is going to live forever, why would they ever want to do that with two sticks and a rock? You're welcome, the near-zero amount of people who will ever read this
Swimming is definitely the worst part of M2. My strongest memory of my first playthrough is of me, underwater, endlessly punching a blue F'lickta who had boxed me in on the Kill Your Television map. Just before I finally killed it, a second one turned up. Still my favourite game in the trilogy by a longshot.
For whatever reason, I actually really like the swimming now that I’m a bit older. But I freakin hated it as a kid. I will say, Kill Your Television is a super annoying map if you don’t do the Blueglass jump. That shaves so much time and annoyance off that level!
I remember as a little kid, getting a free demo of this game. I think the demo was 3 levels but I was hooked and got the trilogy box set...marathon lan parties were my beginning of online gaming!
I won't lie, when I was in Pfhorte and realized that I could vertically stack zones on top of each other, as long as there was no overlap, my mind was BLOWN back in the day. Doom couldn't do that, but Marathon let you build towers with overlap as long as none of the rooms clipped in to each other. Huge accomplishment for an engine at that time.
Wondered why content on this channel was getting so scarce, then I saw you do a 1911 review on TFB. So that’s where you’ve been spending your time these days.
I dunno, I thought swimming in the first Crysis was done pretty well. Using maximum speed to dolphin dive out of the water onto a harbor to surprise attack enemies is still very satisfying.
What was that ending? Who is raging, the protagonist because Durandal is looking for a new protagonist/cyborg, or is ‘Robert’ Robert Blake? Was the security officer truly not picked up by durandal? Some clarification might be nice, but I’ll move to infinity in search of the answer
I’m kinda with you on that one. It’s pretty straight forward, but so damn boring. And idk, I think with me knowing the ship levels are next, I kinda just almost wanna skip through it so I can get to the crazy action. It really is almost like you have to get into a different mindset and lock in whenever you’re on total carnage and know you’re about to be dealing with a shit load of troopers in a relatively enclosed environment
I _vehemently_ disagree that levels based on or containing simulacrums are boring. It just requires that you give a sh** about the humans in the story.
Regarding the fact that Durandal seems to turn around and pick you up from Tau Ceti between games. I like to think that Marathon 1 takes place in a different timeline from that of 2, possibly the one you end up in at the end of Infinity.
Actually it was just after Durandal said his goodbyes that he realized the colony was going to be sacked. His ship was giving off a distress signal that was answered by a nearby pejorative fleet that was even bigger. It’s not officially explained in game, but I think it might be in the “lost network packets” (another official source of the marathon series). I know it’s in the marathon 2 story outline that Bungie used.
Bungie could literally become great again if they made a new Marathon game that plays like Halo with online multiplayer, awesome campaign mode etc. Tides could turn back in their favor big time. It's clear that Bungie is never going to work on any new Halo projects so a new Marathon game could really be amazing in a lot of different ways. I really hope they are secretly working on that or do at some point.
All sorts of stuff doesn't become important until Infinity so we'll get to it then. Including Gheritt White, the secret KYT terminal, all that fun stuff. Stay tuned. :)
This video made me want to play Marathon for the first time, the way you explained the story and the included gameplay footage made the game look fucking awesome. So, I tried to play Marathon 2 on the open source Aleph One engine. As I played the first level, I felt off, maybe it was the way the game handled with the slippery movement, maybe it was the way the world warped around me when I looked up, almost like there was some weird trickery that was allowing me to mouse look, and that the engine wasn't orignally designed to facilitate mouse look. Around the time I got the assault rifle, I was feeling really weird. I was dizzy and unable to really focus on the screen, but the assault rifle felt great to use. Not two minutes later I was puking into the toilet. Games dont make me feel motion sick. Things like VR sickness has never happened to me. Why was it that Bungie's 20 year old game made me sick? Doom and Duke Nukem have never been a problem so I thought Marathon would be no different.
This is from a Reddit post about Aleph One: "This is purely anecdotal, but based on my experience playing this game, I believe the Aleph One engine interprets mouse inputs with respect to its movement velocity, rather than its position, and it has a minimum and maximum value. This has the result of an infinitesimally-small mouse movement being interpreted as a small but significant aim adjustment, while an extremely-fast mouse movement moves the aim at its maximum speed, which is less than it should be if the mouse was interpreted positionally. This is especially frustrating for a long-time modern FPS player, because it means my aim is extremely unpredictable." Basically, instead of your view moving smoothly, moving your mouse does nothing until you've moved it a certain distance, and then your view moves by some minimum amount. Mouselook makes your view move in tiny "chunks" rather than being completely smooth. It made Aleph One unplayable for me too, which is a shame because I loved the Marathon games back in the day.
That's very peculiar, but I definitely recommend taking off mouse acceleration and reducing the sensitivity by a LOT. There's also a wide FOV hack you can find, but I don't think it's necessary.
@@TheExaminedLifeofGaming I fucking immediately turned mouse acceleration off when I wasn't able to even land a shot on the first group of enemies. FOV seems like the problem. But judging from the other comment here, I doubt I'll be going back to Aleph One or Marathon in general for a long, long time.
@@nr1771 That's a pretty big fucking problem. But I since went back to the game, and it's the weird way the world warps when I look up and down, and the low FOV that caused my motion sickness. It makes me queasy just thinking about it and this appears nowhere in the gameplay in this video.
Fun fact: Bungie planned the original Marathon (and possibly the whole trilogy) to be compatible with the CyberMaxx VR Headset, but ultimately it (the headset) was never released for the Mac.
