Landing practice with the L-39 to achieve that perfect landing

  • Learning how to land your rc plane is the most important skill for the rc pilot. In this video I spend two batteries just working on my landing of this Freewing L-39 rc plane. Trying to consistantly nail those perfect landings. I fail on some, while acheive quality landings on a few..

Practice makes perfect! Nice landings brother. It's good for pilots to hear how demanding you are of yourself. Setting specific goals and not being satisfied with "almost" makes a much better pilot. That re-paint really sets it off.

I'm with you; scale smooth landings are my favorite part of flying. I always have to leave the field on a greaser landing. That's why I also enjoy watching Greg from "Fat Guy Flies RC" - take offs and landings make up most of the flight content on his channel.

My goal at the end of this flying season will be to land my planes as smoothly as you do with yours! Nice L-39!!

Randy, Its all about focused practice.. I'll do this type of practice all the time with my planes. Just landings, or just take-offs to get my brain and plane setup correctly.. Keep at it and focus on the stuff that needs perfecting and don't settle for OK... Good luck my friend.. - Will

Great practice session. Very smooth and scale like. I like to practice landings as well. I'm not sure - but my method may be a little different. I usually turn final with some throttle to not lose too much altitude - then at wings level, I cut back all the way to feel where I am on the stick. This lets it begin to descend more than needed for just a bit. But I have come right back in with mild throttle to catch and hold a descent rate that I want. I often have a descent that will actually be short - but I then modulate with a bit more throttle and positive incidence to 'drag it in' to a point of touch down at a desired point on the runway. This often lets me land the way I want.
The above technique is for a calm, unfettered day. On a windy day, I may have to adjust things to just get her down smoothly. Interesting that our various types of planes behave differently and require specialized technique to get the best out of them. Good video Will - I enjoyed it !

Yep, they are different, my 90mm T-45 lands like you described above.. just modulate that throttle and she just drops in. I might make some more adjustments to this plane. Add a bit more down elev in the flap mix.. She really wants to nose up a bit..

I do a few touch-and-goes on most of my EDF flights. I put my transmitter’s flight modes on my flap switch and enable F-mode trim for ailerons and elevator so that I can trim for a comfortable glide in the takeoff and landing flap positions. The plane should descend on final without having to push forward on the stick, but not too steeply. When I turn final, my mind switches to “angle of attack” mode on the elevator. I don’t think so much about speed. I use the elevator to control the pitch attitude and use the throttle to control the descent rate so the plane will touch down just beyond the approach end of the runway. Most of the time, I use the throttle to push the plane to runway. If you pull the throttle back too much, the drag of the flaps will bleed the speed off so quickly that you won’t have much time to flare and set the plane down before it quits flying.

Thanks.. I think you hit on something I need to adjust on this model.. My flap/elev mix. I think I should add a bit more down on the elevator.. I'm not totally hands off the elev (forward pressure). Just an excuse for more flying and tweaking.. Thanks for the comments, always appreciate your input. - Will

@@SteffenRC I set the CG for comfortable inverted flight which means I have to hold a little forward pressure on the stick to fly level inverted. Then I adjust the elevator linkage(s) so that I can set the trim back to center. Then I’ll use the F-mode trims to get the plane to where it glides just above the stall speed in the takeoff and landing flap positions. When the glide is right, I’ll go into the flap system menu, note the elevator channel output, center the trim, and adjust the flap>elevator mix for the same output. When I’m done, the elevator trim should be close to zero in all three flap positions.

That’s a great idea for future videos. It was very calm that morning. I fly early mornings, so it’s often calm. The landings are actually a little easier with a little headwind. Thanks
