WALKS IN DORSET at SOUTH PERROTT & CHEDINGTON (& THE RIVER PARRETT TRAIL) (4K)

  • In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a walk between the villages of South Perrott & Chedington in the North West of the county. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I park my car at South Perrott and begin my walk with a wander through the village, which is full of pretty cottages & houses. The church of St Mary is well worth a visit & look out for the earthworks in the field to the South - the remaining evidence of what was once the location of a large moated manor house called Mohun Castle.
    My route then takes my East along the River Parrett Trail - a long distance path that follows the route of the river itself. Just to the East of the village, the footpath appears to continue along the riverbed (!) but the official River Parrett Trail Guide states “it is advisable to take the signed permissive path that goes along the edge of a field - that rejoins the official path”. However, I could not see the permissive path but there was an undulating path (of sorts!) that went high up along the Southern bank of the river that I was able to follow for about 100 yards. It looks like it was well used but it was not the easiest of paths to use - I would recommend looking out for the permissive path which I clearly missed.
    The trail soon takes me out into an open area by what looks like a recently constructed covered reservoir. With tables and benches set amongst a small orchard, the area appears to have been set aside for folk to enjoy some peace & tranquility.
    I continue heading East, uphill, following the river until I get close to it's source (it looks like there are a number of springs spread out that make up a number of sources). At the top of a small ridge, at a road, I head South West through the village of Chedington.
    Passing through this delightful village, I follow a path along the side of a field and on to Chedington Lane before heading North back to South Perrott along Picket Lane.
    I finish off my visit to the area by driving a short distance to Winyard's Gap (to the East of South Perrott & North of Chedington) to visit a memorial to the 43rd Wessex Division (set high on a hill).
    My final destination is the Winyard's Gap Inn where I enjoy a pint in the beer garden, which has stunning views over the valley below.

    Lots of lovely lush meadows on this walk but that permissive footpath at the beginning looked pretty challenging! A fair bit of history scattered around too. Nice to see the Monarch's Way putting in another guest appearance! Thanks for taking us along!

      Thanks Jean. I am fairly sure that there is a much better permissive path that "diverts" around the "path" that I took .... I think I just missed it!

    I tend to agree with Mark Shrimpton (see below) A really beautifully interesting walk. I love the fact that we hardly ever see people which gives us peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of today's world! But we don't either see many animals except for lovely Logan. No horses, sheep, cows, donkeys or even birds or insects come to that!

      Thanks Martin. There were some cows in one of the fields but, alas, I didn't get around to including them in any footage! Thanks for watching.

    Every field around there looks truly verdant and lush Dave, must be something to do with the British weather! You'll need your passport if you get much closer to dear old Somerset. You pronounced Steart, Stert, as do I, but was told by a gent that it's pronounced Steert when I was birdwatching there one day. Don't know if that's correct, but Stert sounds better to me! Another of my visited pubs ticked off at the Gap. If you carry on up the hill and bear down to the left, the Fox Inn at Corscombe is a pub in a village that's worth a visit.

    Great video again, Dave & Logan! Do you have any plans to have a membership on this channel? Some extra benefits for members each month? As feedback, I would be happy to sign up for that. It can really help pay for your after work drinks, .... and crisps for Logan.

      Thank you & indeed thanks for the idea about channel membership. I have been lucky to have had a handful of donations from regular viewers in the form of "Super Thanks" which has been very kind. As the channel grows, maybe a membership might be something for me to look into going forward. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Dave, if you were 20 and looking to move somewhere quiet and picturesque all from scratch, where would you move to? i'm looking to maybe get a start somewhere long term. im from wales but wouldn't mind going to somewhere in england, i find myself watching these sorts of videos and i'm trying to make a choice. could use a pro to help me!

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  9 місяців тому +1

      To be fair, I only really know West Sussex, Hampshire (including the New Forest) and Dorset. For "somewhere quite and picturesque" there are parts of Dorset that fit the bill but then again it has been over 40 years since I was a 20 year old! Whatever you decide, I hope that you are happy wherever you go.
