Woodturning - White Cedar Bowl

- I grabbed a piece of white cedar I had in my basement I pulled from my yard a couple of years prior. At the time of recording, this was the largest bit of wood I had attempted to turn on my lathe. Engage learning curve!!
Here is the website and UA-cam channel I mention in the video:

Narration is great, for newbies explaining why and what you are doing is as good as visuals
Thank you for the feedback!
Voice over is perfect. Love your explanation as you go along.
Nice job - Love the narration & style - looking forward to seeing many more videos👍
So far I like your narration just fine
Thank you for the feedback! Cheers!
It's gorgeous! And I prefer your narration style; it's educational and laid back.
Thank you for the feedback! I am glad you enjoyed the video!
I like that you don't have music. The voiceover is good. thankyou
Thank you for the feedback! Thank you for stopping by!
?This was the first time I've seen your channel. I like that there's no music in the background and that you do what I think is called voice over. It makes it nice and peaceful and calm. This is a gorgeous piece of wood. You did an excellent job.
Thank you and welcome!
❤very nice❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for the teaching! But would like to hear the sound of the wood cutting- it just gives me another sense to use in knowing how & when to look out for trouble or delight.
Hi, and thank you for stopping by! Unfortunately I have a lot of dust collection running so it kind of ruins the option of providing the sound of the tool. It is also very hard on the ears so I always recommend wearing hearing protection. However, I will be posting a video that does have sound, so hopefully that works out ok. In the meantime, the general idea is that you want to avoid chatter or squealing. This is a direct indication that either your tool needs sharpening, or it is presenting at the wrong position relative to the wood. Either way you will want to pause and take action on one or the other or both. I hope that helps!
Well done. Nylon washers work really well for me.
Thank you for the feedback!
It's a beauty !
Thanks for stopping by! :)
Beautiful job
I love the way you talk over the video. No music please lol. Love the wood . Subscribed.
Thank you for the feedback, and welcome!!
Good job and no music just chat is good. I use a fibre washer on the head stock. Keep it going
Thank you for the feedback! I will look into getting a fiber washer and see how it works out...thanks for the suggestion! Cheers!
Great video & narration well done for not using any music bowl turned out amazing
Thank you very much! I look forward to sharing many more!
Very pretty! I think you chose the right finish, as well. I’m in the no music camp, also. Sometimes it enhances the video, other times it’s just annoying. I find it’s better just to leave it out and not run people off haha. I’d rather hear the tools cutting anyway. Nice job👍🏻
I am glad you liked the video! Thank you for the feedback! I am definitely taking the no music perspective very seriously. As for chip sounds, I don't know if I will be able to work it out, but we shall see. Again, thanks!
You sure scared the hell out of me right off cutting that circle on the bandsaw with those loose long sleeves! An accident just waiting……
Oh man don't I know it! Ever since then I have made sure to keep my hands and arms free from fabric! Thanks for stopping by! :)
I like the explanation of each step!😊
Thank you! Glad you liked it!😊
So mesmerizing.
Thank you Mary! :D
New subscriber here, your channels showed up in my mentions, today. Beautiful piece. I like your voice overs, you have a nice tone to your voice. ❤ Good luck on your channel and your new lathe.
Hi and welcome! Thank you for the kind words of encouragement! Cheers!
Nice job Dan, worthy of subscribing. Good content, no music.
Thank you for the feedback and the nod! Cheers!
I like narration better than music
Thank you for the feedback and the visit!
I enjoy the talking i feel I learn more
I am glad to hear! Thanks!
Well done.
Thanks for the comment and for visiting!
Great piece, and I really appreciate that you share your process. BTW, I found that a nylon washer solves the problem of the jaws sticking to the spindle.
Excellent! Thank you for the tip, and thanks for stopping by!
No grease. Use a nylon washer, works great. Grease has a tendency to get everywhere.
Great advice! Thanks for the feedback!
The deep cracks mean that this piece should not be used for food (especially soup) since it is pretty well impossible to clean properly. Walnut oil can be an allergy risk for some people even after much use. Beautifully done. Thank you.
Excellent feedback! You are definitely right about the cracks and thank you also for pointing out the allergy risk. That is something I will definitely consider when giving these away. Thank you so much for posting and stopping by! I am glad you liked the work. :)
very nice Don,I find that soft wood is nice as we don't have only birch here for hard wood, good work bud
Thank you for the comment! Soft woods can indeed be beautiful.
Pretty bowl. I pretty much always get some wobble when I turn the piece around. You might try applying pressure with tail stock while you tighten.
Thanks for the tip! I will try that out!
Nice job. Try making a donut chuck for removing the tenons. They work good for many size bowls with little investment.
Thanks for the tip! I will consider doing that!
@@nullcycle They are easy to make using scrap plywood and some long carriage bolts.
No grease! The perfect material is a Gatorade bottle cap.
Thank you for the feedback!
Great video! What bandsaw are you using looks pretty nice! One band saw tip, make a template of the circle and put it on the pf the bark side, and use a screw or awl to hold it in place. Then use the flat side to turn the blank. Also always try to keep your fingers away from the blade. When turning the log try to turn from the back. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks for the tip! I actually do that now with all my bandsaw work...gotta love learning! As for the bandsaw, it is a Laguna 14BX (220V motor). I love this thing. Very versatile! Cheers!
I prefer the narration over music. However background music is necessary if no narration. In Washington we have large cedar trees that look just like this. It is very very soft so I don't turn it.
Thanks for the feedback! This wood is indeed pretty soft, so it took some adjustment to get used to. Thanks for watching!
team nylon washer here
Perfect, thanks!
What I do to keeping back plate from sticking I use a piece of cardboard as a washer to prevent sticking,I’ve had the same piece of cardboard on for years
Thanks for the tip!
Your face plate should have come with its own spanner for removing it from the machine.
Interesting...unfortunately they did not. I kind of feel like I didn't get my whole order...LOL! However, that does give me an idea. Thanks for that bit of info!
No music, thank you Music can be very distracting on many videos, narration is better. Nice peice of wood .
Noted! Thank you for the feedback! Glad you liked the piece. :)
Ohhh hey... that's on Orion... You can flash it for the Nebula firmware and get the finishing mode if you want. As for the slight wobble after turning, that's just part of the process. When you clamp on the jaws, it changes the wood very slightly so it's not perfectly centered. Same as when you start off turning between centers and then go to a chuck, or any time to reverse a piece.
Oh...that is great info. I will take a look at flashing the firmware. Thank you for the info regarding the wobble as well. This gives me more of a reason to look further into a reverse chuck adapter for the tailstock. Cheers!
Interested in the flashing part, do you have link for the firmware file?
@@JK-gw8dr It doesn't appear on the site yet. Fill out the support form, mention me and I can send it over to you.
@@richdbolduc What is flashing firmware. I have an Orion but I have never heard that phrase.
@@dianadougherty7187 The firmware is the software that controls the machine and user interface. "Flashing" just means reprogramming it. So by "flashing" the Orion with the Nebula firmware, you're giving the machine the functionality of the Nebula's software
Music is annoying when one is trying to learn someone's techniques
Keep up the good work.
That is great feedback! I had not thought about that. Thank you for the input and the view!
Love the bowl! Show us your dust hood? I'm having trouble getting mine set up right.
Thank you for the comments! I will definitely put something together to show how I made the hood etc. Good idea!

Nice
Thank you for stopping by! :)
Станок хороший.....
Thanks!
Great video but to answer your question I am not a fan of music in a video. Keep up the good work.
Fair enough! Thank you for watching and providing feedback!

Problem here was presentation and sharp tools when the piece stalled. I have definitely learned my lesson there!
Are you new to woodturning?
Hi There! Sort of...only gotten into it about 3 years ago, and on and off during that time. Finally making the effort to hone the craft on a more regular basis.
if you play music you eont see me to many people are drowning good videos with overpowering music instead of talking and hearing the cuyying lathe and all
Thanks for the feedback! I am definitely going to keep it simple and avoid music as I slowly develop this channel. Cheers!
Just enough narration.
Thank you for the feedback!
