  • Winter is here and we're snug and cozy and loving our new life in our off grid cabin. The new kitchen queen stove is doing a fabulous job of heating the cabin and it's cooking performance exceeds our expectations. We are snowed in already and our only access in and out is our Polaris Ranger and 01 Ski Doo snowmobile. Life is good here in the NH woods.

    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

Man I love that you have got it going on the cabin in the snow. I know how you are a winter guy, but for me (with the metal bars in my neck) I just can not take that level of cold any more. Wonderful place you have and very peaceful. Jim

Yep, you guys will be cosy even through the coldest of winter! I did notice your drainage piping in the craw space vacates in a big S trap, where is should be a P trap and then a vent. You should look into this if you start getting sewer smells! Great video JC, thx for sharing!

we had a Kitchen Queen 380 we loved it but have since moved to a new property like you, we are downsizing and the Wife wanted a different heat source (smaller) etc. i have the NEW unused water tank for the back of the 380 stove and the summer cooking grate unused if you ever want them, i'd make you a great deal on them. the new owner of our old house turned out to be not such a nice person so they were moved to the new house with us. i figured we'd get another kitchen queen but the Wife wanted something a lot smaller now they're just sitting.

I copied your dollies that you brought the Kitchen Queen in to the cabin and plan on doing it just like you did next spring. I have enjoyed this video several times. One fun thing about it is that at the beginning there are cheerful bird sounds and my cats are, like, where are they, mom??? They really get a kick out of hearing the birds singing. And I get a kick out of watching them looking around to see where the heck the birdies are.

I started using that bubble wrap on the inside of my garage door about 8 years ago and it did wonders. After seeing your application under the flooring at your NY cabin, I ended up doing the same thing when I built my composting outhouse at my cabin earlier this year. Well worth it. Glad to see your new home and life is thriving as I expected it would!

Gutted a house built in 1857 once, yeah, that was fun.. Racoon mess, squirrel mess, mice mess, snake mess.. YAY.. but lovely old place that we picked up for 8K... It was built to last, everything in it was mahogany, oak and hedge. Trying to cut through the hedge cost us 9 blades and drilling into them killed two dewalt drills.

Oh yes heat loss big time. One of the first thing we had done was to have them come out and re blow the whole house. They had no insulation over the garage and a cheap garage door that had no insulation. Bought the panels for that and installed. Big difference You guys have been working your fanny's off but it sure is looking good You and the family have a wonderfully blessed Christmas and a great new year. Love to all kiss for Frankie
