Additional info regarding power usage: The temperature outside wildly affects air conditioner power consumption & duty cycle. Last weekend, Steph and I went to Adventure Van Expo in Scottsdale Arizona. The temperatures were in the 90's during the day and the 50's at night. We were outside of the van during the heat of the day, so we didn't use the air conditioner. At night, though, the van was a little warm when going to bed; so we turned the air conditioner down to 68 degrees. Since it was cool outside, once the inside of the van was cool; the air conditioner didn't cycle on as much resulting in only 15% power used from our 6.8kWH battery bank being used overnight; most of which was the 'fan only' mode as the air conditioner compressor (eco mode) switched off.

    Great info Nate as usual
We have a 12,000 btu Pioneer mini-split H/P mounted on the tongue of our TT above LP Tanks Powered by
    2/ 24v 200 AH Lossigy batteries 400 AH total
    24v 3,000 watt Sungold inv/charger
    8 / 200 watt panels 1600 total
    it works Awesome !!!

Great video. We have an LG5000 wall mounted AC in our Aliner Expedition camper. Meter readings showed 400-500W draw while compressor was on and significantly lower draw while fan only. We have EcoFlow Delta series lithium battery packs while boondocking. Learned the hard way regarding temperature coefficient drop in solar panel output. Two 200W panels generated 360W consistently in bright sunshine, not 400W. 34:44

I'm still watching but this was very insightful. I was particularly surprised that you don't necessarily want to go the biggest you can afford powerwise
Very knowledgeable dudes in this video. Anyone looking to put ac in a van should definitely watch this. I didn't know shit about variable systems

Great video, I run a 9000 BTU Variable speed Mini-split in a 1/2 below ground 1000 Sft off grid cabin and works perfectly for both heating and cooling.

great info Nate.. I have a small class C with 8000 Wh batts.. and a 11,500 GE.. up in the midwest here where I live I average around 1000 watts with my system on Low.. up to 12 to 1300 on super hot periods.. so I usually dont end up running it during the day when out and around, but at night, it will barely make it thru the night.. the worse the humidity, the more it consumes..

Once again, a Great video Nate! I watched it twice just to take it all in.
My Houghton pulls 1550 watts, or 64 amps at 12 volts. With my 400 Ah battery, looks like I have 6 1/4 hours of usage at 50% run time.
    Thanks

I am running 4 mini splits on my EG4-6000xp, 3 units are 240v 1 is 120v, under full load all of them pull around 3000-3500 watts. Once they bring the room to temp, they spin down and use much less power. They are all 12k btu 18 seer units, 2 from Senville and 2 Gree units.

Great education, thank y'all! Great thoughts on air filtration, wear and tear, and humidity removal related to correctly sized duty cycle!
I'm still a bit lost on how to size a unit for my van, I can't put a unit on my roof, guessing a variable duty cycle is best; the current 5kbtu window unit doesn't work, maybe too much heat coming in from the windshield.

Coleman Mach 3 Plus 13.5kBtu when the compressor is running, including inverter losses (>85% per specs though not tested) and often a 32" TV (AC) on and normal 12v parasitic RV loads pulls between 108A and 122A per the BMS. The inverter charger is setup for "whole house" so microwave control board is also on. Fridge is always on LP, so minor DC load for the board. When the inverter charger is off and just the MaxxAir fan is going on low and stereo in standby, my base 12V output with other parasitic loads is under 3A I believe.

Thanks Nate, lots to unpack here, much of which the mobile market either has no choice for (especially in the US) or simply don't want (yea, a residential split can be mounted on an RV, but a few do do it). I would point out that variable speed systems are far more complex, more expensive, and somewhat more likely to fail. Also, variable speed systems are much more expensive to repair, as the replaceable components are harder to get and much more expensive than a 2-stage or fixed speed motor/control board...

I went with a backpack mini split 24v air conditioner on my vans rear door I run it with 840 watts of solar I really wish my AC had variable power so it could run at a continuous duty cycle because it cycling on and off is annoying I do wonder if the voltage to the device could be regulated to change the power

Most of the rooftop RV air conditioners that advertise as "DC" units, especially the cheaper ones, actually have single-speed AC powered motors with a built-in inverter to convert from DC. They are not very efficient, lack the variable speed and soft ramp up of a true DC unit, and thus annoyingly cycle on and off all or nothing with the accompanying current spikes and wear. Look for a unit with a true variable speed DC motor. They are more expensive but worth it, especially if the AC unit is in or near the sleeping area.

We will put out a video over 48v systems for off grid houses next year. It won’t have a 48v air conditioner as that wouldn’t make much sense.

Not much. A dc air conditioner just needs to match the battery bank voltage.

At this point nate you should be looking at the EG4 Solar 12v Heat pump. It's extremely efficient and cost-effective. It's the same as a
    Mr Cool 😎
You can run it strictly by battery or... during the day it's only using Solar when the sun sets it automatically switches to battery or on grid AC.
It's Solar with a transfer switch to AC or battery 🗽 but with a 12v style mr cool is a whole sized thing of do you have the space to use it 😅😂😊

Thanks for watching! The goal of these videos is to teach YOU how much power that YOU can anticipate needing to power the devices in YOUR system for WHATEVER devices that YOU want to power so that YOU know how much power you need in your own mobile, marine or off-grid electrical system.
Take what you've learned in this video and apply it to the devices in your upcoming build.

Correct me if am wrong, but a thought on your observation of solar being able to run a 12v AC if panel output is > AC draw.
If the charge controller for the solar puts out less charging amperage than the AC is drawing, it seems like you will slowly fall behind. E.g., a Victron 100/30 won’t charge and replenish the batteries as fast as a 12v AC drawing 45 amps.
