Today we take a look at the Woden Class.
This ship was at the Battle of Wolf 359, although never actually seen on screen.
How will it fair against the Shangri-La Class?
Played from both sides in Star Trek Bridge Commander Remastered.

This ship was one of the test models for the USS Excelsior. Shangri-La really is one of the best designs since the 80s.
My headcanon for all of the weird Starfleet ships you see is that they are technical testing ships. Throw a Galaxy warp drive and nacelle on an Ambasador class saucer section and check that it wont blow up when you go to warp. Building a new ship class for real, built pieces of it and attach it to some miranda class to test that it wont fly apart at war 6.
Then once all the components are tested integrate them back into a ship and you get the new Excelcior class, or the Galaxy class. Then of course once the big ship is made you work on reducing the size of all the components into your Miranda and Nebulas types. And you can use the odd ball ships for training, further technical refinement or an emergency fleet, which seems like it happened at Wolf 359.
"We got their shields!" = the starship version of "I've got your nose!"
😲Well done Admiral.. In a way I like the Woden class.. and yes good they picked the Excelsior style.. and that long neck.. almost Klingon style.. still nice ships.. and the Shangri-La.. nice too. And that site is great for info. wow.. need to write that down.. and maybe why the long neck of the ship to carry the torpedoes.. Remember Undiscovered Country.. Scotty saying '' All 100 Photon torpedoes accounted for'' so hmm. nice tactics too Admiral.. great battle as always!!😊🖖
Your Scientists Were So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didn’t Stop To Think If They Should
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ex Astris Scientia is definitely an awesome website. I like to look back at it now and then for references.
To be fair to the Enterprise-E they did a lot of blind firing and wasted a lot of their torpedoes. I think had ALL of them connected they would have done a lot better.
I agree the victor in this is the Woden. I too am glad what we see for the Excelsior in Star Trek III and Star Trek VI was the final ship design.
Agreed by the time they were able to hit that stupid ship most of the weapons systems were spent
While the Woden itself was never named in BobW, glad Max included in the Wolf359 Aftermath pack, as the 4 nacelled Excelsior was barely vsible as part of the wrecked fleet😅
5:45 I think it was quantum torpedoes they said they'd ran out of against the Scimitar.
It looks like a wooden ice cream spoon with some nacelles attached
My dyslexic eyes saw Wooden Class. 😄 I need to read more than UA-cam posts. 😀
From a couple other posts, I'm not alone, but I still smacked myself on the head.
I'll look up Woden once I'm done seeing the battle, I think he some kind of Norse god.
Yes, of the 40 ships at Wolf 359, 39 were lost. I forget which one escaped.
Oh yes, I forget how many torpedoes Voyager had, I think it was around 120.
Odin
Yep, in some backgrounds Woden and Odin are the same... I had to review Norse mythology to find that.
The Allfather... the angry father of Thor 😆.
Voyagers torp count was also researched and documented on Ex Astris Scientia.... 😎
Woden Class... I like the design.
I think the long secondary hull would be a great place for cargo or labs and stuff, while the primary hull is where everyone bunks.
This was originally ordered by Neelix; he ordered a four nacelle pizza slicer. 🍕 🔪
🤣🤣
Woden (Proto-Excelsior) vs Probert Ambassador, battle of the design concepts
Yeah in the real world for the design of the Excelsior the studio made several design models. Eaglemoss even made models of them.
Cool! I wasn't aware Eaglemoss made models of them. That's neat! 🖖
@@RetroBadgerGaming Yeah eaglemoss also did other concept art ships mostly Starfleet also a Klingon ship from enterprise. They also did a couple of Starfleet ships that were only mentioned in reference material like technical manuals. And a few ships that were on screen but not shown properly like Enterprise D captain's yacht & voyagers Aeroshuttle.
Great Work to Every ~ One that was Involed in this Thank You ;
The Woden reminds me of the old flatbed carrier design from Star Fleet Battles.
I would of made use of the empty space between the nacelles and saucer by putting hangers for fighters😊
The Woden-class Refit reminds me of the human ship in the Star Control series of video games lol
Loved it! Do you have the Okinawa Class by chance?
Those are in BC, and maybe in RE...😉
That Galaxy X with the third nacelle has never done it for me aesthetically 😂
I never was a fan of any of the 90s designs. In the 90s everyone was obsessed with things that looked badass and edgy in all media and a ton of designs from then were basically that lol. Now like the new-new stuff the post-Discovery stuff is retro inspired, looks way better.
There's connie debris and a phase 2 connie at Wolf 359 in the show.
I like the excelsior study model as a concept.. id love to see it in STO with like 3 hangars.
Apparently one of the original designs of the excelsior class 😮😮😮
I wonder, if Starfleet went with the Woden design for Excelsior would Sulu still have wanted the bucket of bolts?
Now you have me curious, what the Woden's lore would have been, had it appeared in an episode as a working starship. It's certainly an unusual design.
There are so many ships that were supposedly at Wolf 359
Most were retconned in, though I believe the four nacelled Excelsior was in the background.
I always loved the notion to use concept design ships (pre-cgi model creations for what the ship should look like) as background ships
40 to be exact.
Ex Astra is a great site!
I like the design of both ships
this seems more like a transport colony Vessel I can't see this ship in too many combat situations and to put it up against a future vessel is highly illogical different eras different schools of thought and design philosophies just something to consider.
WHAT!!!
Voyager CLAIMED to have limited torpedoes, but fired over 90 of them thru the whole series.
That looks wicked
I like the Woden. It looks sleek, fast, like Utopia Planitia found the speed freak in the office and told him to draw a fast ship.
The Shangri-la is a gorgeous ship.
On torpedoes. Going by the figures we have in lore, photons should be scary powerful. IIRC it's 1.5kg antimatter and 1.5kg matter in the warhead, about 2.7*10^17J of mass-energy equivalence, 64.5MT in TNT equivalent. Even assuming a large chunk is lost as neutrinos that do nothing and photons going in the wrong direction, Voyager with 38 photons could easily end all life on a planet.
However, Voyager isn't a warship. The Intrepid class is really an explorer at heart. Warships and wartime refits have sharper teeth. One reference book I have, Spaceflight Chronology, lists Romulan War era ships with 200 on the Horizon class cruiser, 400 on the Marshall class destroyer. This would certainly sustain longer operations, but it's a lot of firepower.
The only thing that annoys me about the research in to the wolf 359 battle is that people seem to think that Hanson was on a Galaxy Class stardrive section when he wasnt. It was shown that he is was on Excelsior Class Melbourne
I think the reason for this is that on the original script, which was released years later, it actually stated he was in a Galaxy Class Star Drive. Although changes were made to the script. I don't think it definitively says anywhere what type of ship he was on? We do know that there were 2 Melbournes though. An excelsior and a Galaxy Class 🖖
@@RetroBadgerGaming it was stated when the Enterprise arrived and Shelby listed the ship, her pause before saying the Melbourne is the proof that he was on that ship. There was never any indication he was on the Stardrive section of a Galaxy since there was no wreckage of a Stardrive section at the battle.
There were 2 Melbournes one was Excelsior class the other was Nebula. There was no Galaxy class there
Boom sweet
LOL, speaking of Voyager Torpedoes, see Ex Astris Scientia for details of the total number used...😂😂😂😂
They really should have given Ronald D Moore control of that show lmao
@@kanaric 😅
Voyager used 123 of its 38 photon torpedoes.
It always was a great ship. It also seemed to have hundreds of shuttles for some reason.
🤣🤣
Now I want pizza.
Woden would have fitted in Disco better. Suitably aged ofcourse
Prime universe enterprise a and excelsior vs kelvin uss vengeance
If old pirate ships were made of wood, what is Woden made of? 😉
Also: How much hull could a hullchuck chuck of a Woden if a hullchuck could chuck Wod? 😁
Is it worth having this extender? Especially when "they have holes."
Ok ok pizza hut wants their pizza cutter back, the French are complaining that star fleet stole their baguettes and have nothing to serve with the escargot for visiting dignitaries.
Sorry but the Woden just does not fit in the Star Fleet design ascetic, looks like a drunk ferengi, packled and maylon engineer got together after a year long drinking binge to come up with this
Looks a bit like a stretched out Stargazer, which isn't bad 🖖
