In an era of b-movies, blockbusters and franchise sagas Saltburn is that masterpiece we didn’t know we needed. The plot and development reminded me of Parasite, the final scene Boogie Nights. E. Fennell utilised Keoghan’s unique acting features like Lanthimos did. The film displays the harshness and utter violence the average multiplex goer wouldn’t expect - and yet it made it to the wide distribution.
This for me is the film of the year.

I am one of the few, it seems, not to have been overly impressed by Saltburn. I thought it was pretentious and struggled at times for pacing. There were blank moments where nothing was really happening. I think that it dragged on before it came to its end conclusion and whilst some of the premise is good I think it didn’t delve in to the character dynamics as much as they could have especially not with Felix especially after his discovery. Then again, as I say, this is my view and all movies are subjective experiences just this one sadly wasn’t one for me.

Totally understandable, it is an extremely divisive movie. My opinion has admittedly changed a bit since I made this video, sometimes in the negative, sometimes in the positive. Either way I think it's a movie worth seeing and talking about - no matter what you have to say about it. Thank you for the comment!

I haven't seen your past videos, I just saw an advanced screening of Saltburn last night and was blown away. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the film I fully agree with your takes. I have another showing of this fever dream of a movie next week and can't wait to see it again.

Awesome! It has only grown in my estimation the more I think about it. I'm pretty jealous you're getting a second viewing so soon! I'll be doing the same thing when it releases wide though, what are some of your favorites of the year?

@@granteus_ ooo damn, I would have to think about it.I haven't been out to see as many movies as I would like, but off hand I can say I think Bottoms is a sleeper that more people should see, it's got its problems, but it holds a special place in my 2023 top picks. Another one I enjoyed was Beau is Afraid, and Barbie was surprisingly better than I expected it would be.

I was so excited about this movie but I was very disappointed. The ending is exactly what I expected it to be, even from the trailers. I don’t know why people are saying this film is a masterpiece & that it had so many twists and turns. I guess the movie had twists but they all led to the same very predictable & obvious ending, which is boring. People compare this film to The Talented Mr. Ripley which I do not understand AT ALL. What made that movie so good is that the audience never knew what Tom Ripley was going to do next or how far he would go. Oliver’s motives in Saltburn are predictable and they really don’t make sense, in my opinion. Oliver isn’t poor or lower class. We see that he comes from a wealthy background too, so his only motivation for vengeance is because Felix ignored him sometimes……….until he didn’t and invited Oliver to spend the summer with his family. Unlike in the talented Mr. Ripley, Tom is actually extremely poor & has to work multiple jobs just to survive to the next day. Tom idolizes the rich but he also hates and is offended by their easy & carefree lifestyle that wasn’t earned and taken for granted. Also it’s very clear that Tom Ripley is romantically attracted to Dickie and most of Tom’s attraction to Dickie, comes from Dickie’s wealthy and lavish lifestyle. So Tom’s actions towards Dickie Greenleaf make sense.
But again what was Oliver’s motivation for all of this? However, I liked the cinematography and the acting.

I enjoyed having a Maurice/Brideshead Revisited turn into American Psycho... it's not as much to be analyzed as just enjoyed for the over the top revelry of narcissism that it is. Oliver went from his sexual want of Felix to be determined he would be discarded as a seasonal pet once he had seen the grandeur of Saltburn, which beyond being the site of the action becomes a character itself.

The Rosamund Pike clips have convinced me to see it. Great comedic acting.

This is a McFilm if ever I saw one. NO offence but film critics should have some film history knowledge. Visually the film is akin to "Cinema du look" e.g. La Femme NIkita or Diva (both films blow Saltburn out of the water). Yes the film IS like the Talented Mr. Ripley so much so that Oliver Quick = Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, Felix Catton = Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf, Farleigh = Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie Miles, Venitia and Lady Elizabeth to an extent both = Gwyneth Paltro as Marge and Cate Blanchett as Meredith Logue. The only difference is that during Saltburn I was checking e mail on my silenced phone while with Ripley one could watch their terrific performances 25 years later. Meanwhile this "Downton Abbey gone to the fluid kink sex club" will sink to the bottom of the film cannon like like those rocks with dead peoples names on them in this is it Amateur or AI? film.

It’s neither amateur and AI, it’s just facts
