JK Rowling wrote some Harry Potter in a suite of the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. The suite now bears her name and is very popular with hotel guests. Some literary scholars say Rowling was attracted to write in this grand, ancient city due to it having a well documented history with witchcraft and public hangings. Great comment, thank you. The cafe where she wrote a chapter of the Sorcerer's Stone is in Edinburgh as well! Rowling actually received a grant from the Scottish government to write the book as she was broke at the time, which she recounted in 1998.
