- The Mach 1 had a powerful V-8 engine, although it wasn't as aggressive as the GT350 or GT500. This engine was also offered in Shelby and Boss models. Although Shelby models were often outfitted for track duty, the Mach 1 nonetheless had all of the comfort amenities. Rather than a pony car made for rapid laps on the racetrack or runs down the drag strip, it was more of a highway racer.
For the Mach 1, Ford created a few distinctive body modifications, beginning with a front hood that had race-spec pins, a matte black line, and a large scoop in the middle. A chin spoiler, rear deck spoiler, and quarter window louvers were available options. A few additions were also made to the interior, but the design remained the same. A chrome pop-open gas cap, Magnum 500 wheels with Goodyear tires, chrome exhaust tips, and a sportier suspension configuration were also included as standard features.
1969
Ford had four available engines for 1969, but the 5.8-liter Windsor V-8, with 250 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque, was the Mach 1's standard engine.
The 6.4-liter V-8 was available with 320 horsepower and 427 pound-feet of torque, while the 5.8-liter produced 290 horses and 385 pound-feet of torque in four-barrel form. The Cobra Jet, 7.0-liter V-8, which produced 335 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, was also offered in Ram Air and standard spec.
1970
The Mach 1 saw minor exterior modifications for 1970. The former lights on each side of the grille were converted into horizontal vents, and the lights inside the grille were made the main lights. The side scoops behind the doors were eliminated, and the original taillights around the back were replaced with recessed units on a black honeycomb panel. Ford also updated the wheels, the emblem and stripe package, and the bucket seats. The four-barreled 5.8-liter V-8 engine was updated from 290 to 300 horsepower, replacing the 6.4-liter V-8 engine, which was removed from the lineup. The Mach 1 had three- or four-speed manual transmissions and a three-speed automatic gearbox available during these two years.
1971?
The Mustang from this era looked very different from the Mustang from the previous generation, but still being a part of the first generation. A more aggressive body style with a wedge-like appearance, a taller hood, and a shorter rear deck were among the key changes. The headlamps were once again pointed in the direction of the sides, and the grille again covered the whole width of the front fascia. Ford also abandoned the traditional bumper in favor of a component that blends better with the fascia. Ford also changed the rear end, adding a new set of taillights. Additionally, the SportsRoof body type evolved into a full-fledged fastback design with hardly any decklid in back of the angled rear window.
The matte black graphics on the hood and the quick-release pins were among the distinguishing characteristics that the rebuilt Mach 1 kept. The dual scoop design on the engine hood was now present. Instead of being chrome like the standard Mustang, the bumpers were color-matched to the body. Black waistline stripes and "Mach 1" badges on the lower front fenders were now also part of the graphic package.
A new base engine in the shape of a 4.9-liter V-8 with 210 horsepower and 296 pound-feet of torque has been added to the lineup of available engines. - Авто та транспорт

1971 Mach 1 Mustang ... I bought mine in March of 73 ... I Still have it and still drive it !!
and yet, this is my fav Mustang, the 71-73 sportback/fastback.
When I was 17 I bought a used bright red 1973 Mach I 351C and it was my daily driver for the next 15 years. I had it all through college and drove it all across the country. It will probably be my all-time favorite car. I’m 6’6” tall and it fit me like a glove. I’ve never been able to fit in to a Mustang since then.

1973 was a horrible yearfor the Mustang. Low compression slug. I had one that I bought new and raced It couple of times. 16.3 was the best quarter mile time I ran. Stone.

My favorite Mach 1 Mustang is the 69 - 70!! Great cars!!!
The 70 had a better suspension you could take that car today and it will out ride and drive any Ford on the road they didn't stop worth a damn but haul ass yes sir buddy in a 70 Mach 1 who wants to stop for me the 69 still had that Ford falcon feel in the steering and suspension
I’m 19 currently and I bought a 1973 Mach 1 with the 351c. It has been everything I expected it to be which I hope to keep with me forever!
I got one right before my 18 birthday and working on it is insanely easy. I love it I feel the emissions stuff in the engine kept the engine healthy for later years. Needless to say I deleted that stuff. But good stuff man I love mine.

The original series of Mach 1 Mustangs will always be top classic cars on anybodies list.
I was 16 years old in 1973 and always wanted one of the Mach 1's of that year. I couldn't afford it, so I bought a used '65 GT Mustang. But my buddy just down the road had a beautiful Blue '73 Mach 1 with silver stripes. Fast forward to today, I am retired, and was fortunate enough to acquire a restored '73 Mach 1, yellow with black stripes and hood. I was also fortunate enough to take my buddy for a ride in it before he passed away last year. So many memories. My wife and I have enjoyed taking it to cruise ins and car shows and belong to a car club near us. Life is good. Btw I am also 6'6" and the seat is all the way back!
As I said or hinted at before because of the times I bought a 74 mustang GT with the pretty much high output version of the stock 4 cylinder motor available in 1974 due to the obvious reasons of those days (fuel economy, the oil crisis, etc.) and like most American car buyers didn't necessarily put a Ford at the top of any car buying list nor Chevy or Chrysler for that matter until the last few years with the new updated generations of pony cars, which have new fuel efficient versions of the big blocks that made them famous, and with the optional fuel injection and supercharger systems the new versions of the v-8s are pretty much just as powerful as the big blocks of the late 60s and early 70s with the current versions with supercharger options putting out as much or more horse power as those old big blocks that made pony cars so popular in the mid to late 60s and early 70s, and I apologize for my rambling on and repeating myself at times but at almost 73years old I just wish that this pony car revival had happened sooner so I could have enjoyed it more but at least a whole new generation of gearheads will be able to love all the hotroddding possibilities that my generation got to enjoy and with fuel efficiency being a world wide way of thinking these days and electric vehicle technology advancing pretty much daily I'm thinking that some form of hotroddding or racing will be around for quite a while to come and with that said I'll back out of here and let y'all have fun having a conversation about what the future holds for hotroddding and racing 😊😅😮😂❤😊❤
'69 Mach 1 (And the Shelbys of 67-70) is one of my favorite of all car ever made. It looks like its moving even when its standing still. There were several motors and packages available including the 428 Cobra Jet

In 1974 my mate purchased a 71 Mach 1 imported into the UK. Not particularly quick but size, noise and road presence..amazing. We had nothing like this on local roads at the time.👍
I can’t imagine trying to drive something that long and wide in London, not to mention the cost of fueling a ‘71 Mach 1 (even in the 70’s!), I don’t even like driving my Mazda MX-5 in London!

Seems like 140 HP doesn't seem like much horse power compared today. My Chevy Astro van is 260HP. If the speed governor was disable. It would do 140 mph very easy.
My love for the Mustang started when I was in the 4th grade back in 2003. My best friend who was my neighbor at the time, his dad bought a used 1999 Electric Green SVT Cobra. I remember how loud, and badass the car was and I just knew I had to have a Mustang when I was older. I'm now 29, and put in an order back in June for a 2022 Race Red Handling Pack Mach 1 with all the bells and whistles. Elite package, Recaro leather seats, red brake calipers... I went all out with the options since it will be my first custom order vehicle. The car is currently in production, and the blend date will be September 1st. I'm extremely hyped, and can't wait to take delivery. 😁

I graduated in 2002 and drove a 90 GT mustang. And The 99/04 stangs was the coolest mustang I ever seen. 15 years later I was ready to buy another mustang and chose a 2000 mustang gt. Cheap and fun to throw around the road.
The way a mustang should be. These cars use to be $25k (tops) loaded with options. Now $50k for a new mustang gt and people celebrate gays lol. What a despicable time to raise children.

@@OtisSpringerpilot Amazing vehicle, the best I have ever owned. It's surprisingly well-balanced all around. For the weight, the car handles incredibly well. Turning is precise and quite predictable. The engine response is great and has more than enough of horsepower to make it a reliable daily, and fun during spirited drives. I love the recaros, they are quite comfortable, and do an excellent job. The cup 2's are nice and grippy but tramline on uneven surfaces. They are very expensive too, which sucks. The only mods I have done to the car are window tint, and hood struts. I don't plan on doing anything else, the car is plenty loud and fun stock.

I got mine for 17k last year. It’s mainly about constant research and looking everywhere.
Back in the day, I had one of the de-tuned '72 Mach 1 fastbacks. A 351 Cleveland V2 with stock single exhaust. It would barely spin the tires. It would top out at 115 mph like it had a governor on it. But it sure looked cool.
1969 & 1970 Mach Ones came with 351W, 351C (4V), 390, 428 (S)CJ engines. Some 390s received the Cobra Jet heads due a shortage of the regular 390 heads - yes, there's a difference! There are only cosmetic differences between a 1969 & 1970 Mustang/Mach 1 which are also related close to the 1967/68 Mustangs.. The Shelby GT500 had 428 (S)CJ powerplants. No Shelby ever had a BOSS 302 or a BOSS 429 engine. Only BOSS 302 Mustangs received the Boss 302 CLEVELAND headed engines which were essential 289 Hi-Po shorts blocks with a 3.0" stroke at the crankshaft meaning that the STROKE and not the bore is the difference between a 289 & 302 which also means that you cannot bore a 289 out to a 302 with out hitting coolant. The Boss 429 Mustangs were built by Kar Kraft due to the Semi Hemi heads requiring modification to the 1969/70 bodies to accommodate the wider dimension of the BOSS 429 engine which had very little in common with either a regular 429 or 429 (S)CJ. By 1969, Carroll Shelby was out of the picture and the Shelby Mustangs were more luxury pony cars and the Mach 1s and the Boss Mustangs were the serious competitors with the Camaros, Firebirds, Challengers, Cudas, Javelins and AMXs. Boss 302 and Boss 429 Mustangs also were not available with A/C and the only power option was power steering for Boss Mustangs. Most 1969/70 Shelbys had A/C; great for comfort but added weight and robbed power for the engine.

'69 351 was Windsor (like the 302, but 1/2 taller block) -' 70 was a Cleveland.
4 of my personal favourite Fords from 1970s the Mustang Boss/Torino GT & Cobra and the Falcon XB GT.
I remember the early mach 1 looked like a hearse driving away. I was on my bicycle a lot in those days, so it's an image I saw a lot. The visibility can't have been great,although dual mirrors helped. Now I'm one of few driving any sedan or coupe.

An exclusive car ? A chrome finished Mach One, sent in a pink foam envelope which is where it stayed unless i was playing with it.
I had about 15 cars, two Super Chargers, banked turns and enough track where me and my Viet Nam war returnee BIL could have a car do a lap on its own. Good times.
I'm like 15 and come home and everything was gone, given by my Mom to a kid across the street.

My favorites were '69, and '73.
I bought a '69 Mach I new, Candy Apple Red like the one in the video, 351W and auto trans.. Young and foolish, I ran it a few times at a local 1/4 mile strip, turned in the low 15's. Of course I'd like to have it now.😁
'71 Mach 1 stuck with me my whole life so much so, that after 47 years on this planet, my first new car I ever bought was a '21 Mach 1.

The mustang must be one of the few models that in 1 generation has 3 generations (1964 - 1969 - 1971 look each one like a different car).
I sometimes miss my 73 Mach 1, with the 4V 351Windsor block. But at 9 mpg, I don't miss buying gas for it! I still hate the stupid emissions controls that utterly screwed-up the motor and loathe the 'Mustang II. 😅

Back in 82 I had the pleasure to own one just like the yellow one shown here, mine was a light sparkling blue.
It was a gas hog for a daily commute.
It was a big, solid car to go on long interstate trips. I bought it used from the original owner.
Back in 1980 I had the beautiful Celica Supra, sparkling silver 6 cylinders with all the bells and whistles.
I sold the mustang cause it was a big car that need it a huge space to park it.
Back then it was fast and with that AC in the marvelous Santa Monica beach it was a car a lot of people stop just to take a look at it. I don't know what's wrong with today's technology and engineers, they design cars so they can be the only ones to fix it, even to change a damn light bulb.
I remember a hot rod magazine article where they were debating the baddest engine of all time naturally they over rated the Chevy and under rated the mopar and Ford engines but what blue my mind was the retraction I think the next issue they admitted the Ford 351 Cleveland was pound for pound the baddest engine ever made and if I remember correctly they said the amazing part was it only got 2 years of development before the smog wars eliminated it this edition was long before anyone had ever heard the name bill Elliott I do think this was about the time bob Gliddin was kicking ass with a pinto

Boss Mustangs all had unique engines that were not available in other Mustangs. Yes, a Cougar Eliminator was offered with a Boss 302 engine, but that's it.
Umm, there were no mach 1 engines offered in boss models.
People can argue about '71's, but there's a significant difference between a boss 351 and a '71 351c-4v such as:
b351's had 4 bolt mains while 351c-4v's may have had either 2 or 4 bolt mains.
b351's had closed chamber heads while 351C-4v's may have had either closed or open chamber heads.
b351's had higher compression forged pop-up pistons while 351c-4v's had lower compression cast flat top pistons.
b351's had a solid lifter cam instead of the 351c-4v's hydraulic, so the b351 heads were machined for screw in studs and had adjustable rocker arms and push rod guide plates.
b351's had an aluminum intake with a bigger carb, while 351C-4v's had cast iron intakes with a smaller carb.
b351's had a dual point distributor, and a rev limiter while 351c-4v's had a single point distributor and no rev limiter.
b351's had cast aluminum valve covers while 351c-4v's had stamped steel valve covers.
b351's had higher flowing exhaust manifolds and a thicker harmonic balancer than 351c-4v's.

Even though it was almost the same size as the original 64 and 1/2 mustang I was told by a friend who was a Ford dealer that the 74 and newer mustangs never did produce the sales numbers of either the first or second generations of mustangs and from all I've seen and heard we're lucky Ford chose to even produce the current generation of mustangs and as has happened before the drive train(engine to rear end ) options are at least some what due to Ford having to conform to the rules about showroom versions of racing versions of the cars produced for the street legal sales , of the various racing series Ford is providing vehicles for all the way from sports cars (road course racing)) to the truck series in Nascar including some open wheel series they provide engines for much the same as Chevy and Chrysler do so in some way, shape, or form the now big 4 car makers (Ford , Chevy , Chrysler , and Toyota) are still competing with each other in one combination or another in more than one 1⃣ racing series or another, pretty much worldwide these days and because of that the cars they make along with Honda and the other primarily Japanese and other Oriental car makers plus the European car makers involved in the various off road racing series would wide just about every brand of vehicles sold worldwide have at least some sort of ties between showroom street legal vehicles and their racing counterparts, no matter what the brand is or how much technology is shared from engine and drive train parts to just the technology systems used , so in a way not much has changed in the development of showroom vehicles because of what a car brand learned in their racing experience over the last 100 years plus and I for one 1⃣ am thinking that the electric vehicle industry will be much the same way for the foreseeable future, cause like it or not folks I'm thinking vehicle racing of one kind or another worldwide is here to stay , at least for the foreseeable future as a research and development tool for most car manufacturers worldwide 😊😅😮😂❤😊❤

I think mine was a 69 or 70. Had hood safety latches. 351 eng with 4 barrel and 4 speed on the floor. Great driver when it was not in for wheel alignment, 3 times in 6 months. I do not hit bumps of drive recklessly. Fortunately it was stolen at 6 months. Good riddance. Around 1985 a relative who raced them told me about a kit that strengthen the front and the wheels stayed straight. That was the last Ford I ever bought.
My first car was a used 69 Cobra Jet Mach1. I need to correct a stat you made. Magnum 500 wheels were never available on 69 Mach1, not sure if they were even available on 70 models. The Magnum 500 were available on 69 and 70 Boss Mustangs, both 302 and 429! The Mach1 started offering Magnum 500 on Mach1 in 71. My group of guys that owned Mach1s in 75 started adding Magnum 500 wheels on early Mach1s. We like to think we started the trend!!
Same goes for the front and rear spoilers, and rear window slats. They were initially offered as options on the '69 Boss 302, but now seem to appear on almost every restored 69-70 Mustang fastback out there. We generally prefer the look of the car without them.

Favorite year has to be my foster fathers 1972 Graber blue w/silver accents Mach I and had the 429 V8. I seen pictures of him with it and it was a nice car until his brother drove it onto the beach and left it there when high tide came in and within a year the poor car was rotted out. My foster father bought it brand new and he was pissed his brother did it
I had a red 71 Mach One with a 351c two barrel, FMX automatic and 2.75 rear end. Now this sounds like the last thing you would want for performance but I could easily smoke the tires from a stand still, reach over 120 MPH, and when driven conservatively could attain 20-21 MPG. Never took it to the track but bet it would do low to mid 15’s in this configuration. This particular edition was built in late 1970 so I think it retained some of the characteristics of the 351’s built in late 1970. Too bad the thing rusted out on me. I lived in the Chicago area at the time and between the road salt and the harsh winters it was just a matter of time before the rot took her toll. If she would have survived I always wanted to upgrade her with a 4 bbl, headers, electronic ignition and four wheel discs.

I fell in love with the Boss 351 in the autumn of 70 when I saw a silver one in the showroom of the Ford dealer in Wheaton Illinois. Many years later (90s)I ended up owning a 71 Boss and had to defend the body style to skeptical friends. I told them that it was "an acquired taste". The 71 Mustang was a large car styled to look even larger, presumably to capture sales from the would be intermediate musclecar buyers (especially GM types). Over the years I have grown sour on the 71 fastback style. Just today, I was at a local car show and saw a yellow 71 Mach 1. My gut reaction was "holy shit..that's way too big and long."
I have a hardtop and am thinking of converting the rear section to fastback. Do you think the hardtop looks a little less bulky or oversized?

Surprised there is no mention or picture of the cream of the crop '69 Mach 1 438 Cobra Jet. Other than the ID on the air cleaner under the hood, the only identification on the exterior are the chrome and enamel coiled Cobra badges on each side of the hood scoop. This was my dream car when I was a high school freshman in 1969. When I graduated in '72 my Dad gave me a very rare '65 Ford Falcon Sport Coup. (The one car I should have kept!) I got a well paying part-time job, enrolled full-time in art school and drove it for a year. Sold it to my younger brother (he promptly wrapped it around a telephone pole) and bought the '69 Mach 1 I always wanted. Loved it to death but rising gas prices prompted me to sell it after 3 years. The real downside to this baby was that it was an absolute cop magnet. While I only ever got one speeding ticket (four miles over the limit) I was constantly being pulled over because the boys in blue thought I stole it. Being 20 years old with long hair and a porn stache didn't help! But hey... it was the perfect image for the car at the time!

Magnum 500's were not offered on the 69 Mach I. They camw with chromed and painted steel wheels with a brushed stainless hub cap and a brushed stainless rim. Magnum 500's were on the Boss 302 and the Boss 429 in 69 and 70. Magnums became optional on Mach I Mustangs in 71.

I have a 71 R code 351C 4V heads 4speed ( With air conditioning) . She needs a lot of love and my career ended after a neck injury. Sadly I'm considering finding a new home for her as it doesn't appear I'll be able to do everything needed to get her going. If you have one, cherish it . I have other projects that could potentially be completed with less time, effort, and most importantly money, but I love the sound of the 351C.

Brother had a 69 back in the early 90's for like a week till he got drunk one day and wrapped it around a tree sideways... Yeah he lived, Barely. Then drunk again wrapped a late 70's TA around another tree a year later... Lived....
I have to chuckle! Back in the 60’s and 70’s Ford and the other car companies went by cubic inch displacement not liters! So no one ever called the 302 a 5.0 or 4.9. It wasn’t until the advent of the fox body mustang that Ford used the displacement in liters. There is a reason Ford called the 302 a 5.0, it was because they had a 4.9 liter 6 cylinder engine. If you’re going to hype on that then you should also do the same to the chebbie 350 since it really only displaced 348 cubic inches!

Hey Boca brothers, when you talk about older cars like that please please do not forget to refer to the engine size in cubic inches followed by the liters. Please. When you say 6.4 for a 1970 Mach 1, a lot of us have to stop the video and look up which engine that is. I was thinking was that the 390 or was it an option I wasn’t familiar with.

Car and Driver magazine always called the 302ci V8 the 4.9 liter V8(not the 5.0 liter V8). The current Coyote V8 is a true 5.0 liter V8!

Great video. But Should've kept going through the 03/04 Mach 1. They're modern classics and immensely better than the 1st/2nd gen models in every way. Well...maybe not the 90s ford plastic...but no one is perfect😄
I have a stock 65 Mustang 2+2, 289 2v, 3 spd, console.. The HIPO 289 was outstanding. I might swap for a Boss or 428. Otherwise, I will keep what I have.
There are lot's of high performance parts you could put on that 289 2bbl to make it exceptional. Aftermarket heads would make a huge improvement coupled with a 4bbl carb and headers.
That red Mustang at 0:58 was not a Mach1, nor a 428 engine.

YEAH, 1969 Mach 1 was pretty good, should of had an option for the 427 FE.
I think Ford had stopped producing the 427 FE by that point. The new 385 series 429 was there to replace it.
I think 1968 was the last year for the 427 FE? A few 1968 Mercury Cougars came with a 390 HP 427 early in the year. However this engine was soon dropped in favor of the 428CJ.
My step dad had a 1972 mach 1 .... Black with chrome .... Back then classic cars weren't worth much I could buy a 50s Cadillac for $300 funny how the market shifts .... I think someone wanted $8000 just for a mach 1 shell dam
Late 70's early 80's sucked for American car design but was great for music.
