  • South Korea's "Dior Scandal": First Lady being called Marie Antoinette | Vantage with Palki Sharma
South Korea's First Lady Kim Keon Hee is in hot water over a lady Dior bag she received as a gift in 2022. A hidden camera was used to secretly record the transaction. It is now making headlines in South Korea, putting President Yoon Suk Yeol in an awkward position. His party members have started to turn on him, and one has even compared the First Lady to French Queen Marie Antoinette. The infighting threatens to tear the President's party apart just months ahead of South Korea's Legislative election. Palki Sharma tells you more.

A church pastor buys a USD2250 handbag as a gift for someone ? Surely that is another scandal in itself - what spiritual goal can a handbag help to achieve?

If we receive a gift, do we really ask how much did it cost the giver? That's embarrassing, isn't it? With her status, US$2250 isn't that expensive to me. Perhaps, I would be more interested in knowing why the Pastor gave her a gift, why it was secretly filmed and in return, what favor did the first lady extend to the Pastor.

It speaks about the corruption that has been going on in South Korea. For example, when the Itaewon incident happened on Halloween 2022, the politics did nothing for the victims families. A lot of the victims are foreigners and their families had the hardest time to get a proper incident report. One of the victims is actually a Korean-Austrian, who went to the same University as I do now, and when the Korean prime minister visited Vienna, he told the grieving mother: "How can the government know everything?" Bribery is unfortunately a well known practice in S. Korea. That is why a lot of bullying are not being properly taking care of, ending in victims taking their lives. Young teachers are especially at risk in S. Korea because of rich and entitled parents bribing officials. Unfortunately, this country has a very high suicide rate among teachers.

    ⚠️ from France !
Historians may have searched for the origins of these quotations, but they found no mention of them in any biography of Marie-Antoinette, nor any archive of the Revolution. She was not even accused during her trial, before going to the guillotine. The privileged hypothesis is that of a kind of popular legend, dating from before the arrival of Marie-Antoinette in France, telling the story of a princess who told the poor to eat brioche or even pie crusts.
The first written record of this rumour is found in the Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He wrote, in Book VI: "I remembered the worst-case scenario of a great princess who was told that the peasants had no bread, and who replied: Let them eat brioche!" This book, published posthumously in 1782, was written in 1765, five years before Marie-Antoinette arrived in France.

"Let them eat cake," was a phrase never uttered by Marie Antoinette... The first person to put the specific phrase “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche” into print may have been the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In Book VI of Rousseau’s Confessions (written about 1767), he relates a version of the story, attributing the quote to “a great princess.” Although Marie-Antoinette was a princess at the time, she was still a child, so it is unlikely that she was the princess Rousseau had in mind.

As a Korean professor working at a research-focused university in the west once in what I call 'my previous life' I was offered 'tokens of gratitude' from students numerous times. I kindly but vehemently rejected each one of those gifts out of fear that I might 'appear' to be receiving a bribe. And I was not a public servant or in politics. Just a lowly professor.
Interestingly, every single one of those gifts came from Korean students. But come to think of it, there was never any ill-intention on the part of those students. Gifting is omnipresent and a big part of Korean culture. The students were simply very thankful for my teachings and showed me much appreciated respect. I guess I appealed to them in a positive light as a minority Korean teaching and doing research at a highly regarded institution in a western country. In every single one of those cases, the students came to my office with gifts when the semester was already over and the grades had been submitted to the administrators.

    S. Korean politicians and LEADERS are well known for monetary bribes. Every Politician obtains FAVORS for either lack of follow up in addressing or not addressing various issues that are critical to the S.Korean people. These situations include housing, employment, crimes against women, health care and other matters that directly harm or support whatever issue they decide to address at that time. The President in fact received support because of his support against women’s critical issues in S. Korea…the opposing candidate was known for his favor of helping women’s issues. In fact men in S. KOREA attack women who they call FEMINISTS based (one I seen because she had a short hair cut) but are really are asking for equal treatment in employment, education or opportunities in leadership. These types of attacks are routinely excused. Thank you for sharing this story FIRST POST but it’s really a tip of the misogynistic culture and ignored behavior of accepting bribes for FAVORS.

The case involving the First Lady of South Korea, Kim Keon Hee, and the Dior bag scandal is not related to women's issues or feminist matters. Although there have been claims that President Yoon Suk Yeol used feminist issues to divide his supporters during his candidacy, the Dior bag incident is entirely unrelated to this. In Korea, there are widespread rumors that the First Lady is the de facto number one power holder, and there are suspicions that she is deeply involved in state affairs. Therefore, this case is not viewed as a minor transgression by the First Lady, but rather as a corruption scandal involving power.
Additionally, Kim Keon Hee has been embroiled in other controversies, including the Yangpyeong land issue, where it was alleged that the government modified the route of a highway project to benefit land owned by her family, leading to accusations of corruption. Furthermore, she faced allegations of academic misconduct, accused of committing plagiarism in her doctoral thesis and other academic papers. An investigative committee at Kookmin University, where she earned her Ph.D., cleared her of plagiarism in some papers but stated it was impossible to verify allegations in one paper, leading to continued suspicion.

LOL it is funny that I am explaining this, which is known by all South Koreans. I would gladly write some information for this foreigner friend.
Here are some of the stuff I can just think from the top of my head but there are so many more if I research.
      1. She is under strong suspicion that she manipulated stock market and earned 2.3 billion in a very short amount of time with her mother. People who helped her went to jail already but not her, who commanded the actual action and earned money. There are countless evidence.
      2. She is under strong suspicion that she made the highway development plan to a different route, that is inefficient, as soon as she became a first lady, without proper discussion among experts including the residents. The reason for that would be if the highway is made in her property, the value of her lands will increase.
      3. She is under strong suspicion that she influenced her husband, the president, to make important changes of the country, based on her spiritual leader, who is a "shaman". She acknowleged and her husband acknowledged that they listen to this "shaman" guy who talks all nonsense on a youtube. For example, when her husband became a president, they moved from a Blue House (that is White House in US) to a Department of Military. The Blue House is empty now. This is very odd happening. Since no one can explain why they moved, people assume that this "shaman" guy suggested them to move. This shaman guy says some nonsense on his UA-cam channel and the president make orders to follow some of these nonsense orders. For example, When 159 people died from Itaewon by stampede, the country did not put people's picture or name during the funeral. This happened after this shaman guy said, "you should not go to a place where there are names of death people" because you will be hunted by their ghosts or something like that.
My friend, there are probably 10 more things I can write but since this is already a long writing, I will pause here. Please wish for well-being of South Korea. We hate this president and this first lady. (According to this week's Korea Gallup, 31% supports this president and 63% of the population is not supporting this president. Majority of this 31% of the people who support the presidents are 60s or older)

Since this and other things--like suspicion of manipulating stock market--were getting more and more noisy, she had a press conference and bagged for forgiveness. She promised in front of whole press with near tears that if her husband becomes a president, she will never act as a first lady, but just act like stay-home house-wife for the president. because it's the law. Giving gifts is in the DNA here which turned into buying influence where it became expected for you to buy a gift for someone no mater how poor you are. so to try to clamp down on corruption, this was a very serious law that all of us working here have to be very careful of. it's hard because most people have no ill intent with giving gifts here since it's the culture. but it has also become a serious political and corporate issue as well as in our schools here. buying influence with giving gifts. Seems innocent to buy a gift for your kids teacher. but then at what point, say a Rolex watch or luxury alcohol is given that the teacher feels he should reciprocate by increasing the kids grades over other kids or to get into a better University or bosses expect employees to give holiday gift and if not, maybe not have a job anymore. It's a serious issue here that goes back a long time. and if teachers are being fired for accepting gifts, then the 1st lady should also set an example or be held accountable. The law is the law.

Cash payments can be gifts too. Giving an object and calling it a gift doesn't solve the problem - it is not like giving something to a friend. She is a politician. Do you think there is no problem with a property developer giving a gift of apartments to an official and then the developer coicidentally getting approval for something because it's a gift and he's just being a nice friend?

First, her husband was a prosecutor when the anti-bribery laws were enacted. Second, does it make sense that the First Lady doesn't know the laws of her own country? Third, the law against bribery of public officials was so famous when it was enacted a few years ago that it was nicknamed the Kim Young-ran law, and even elementary school students know it. And finally, is an unknowingly committed offense always innocent? She even had the opportunity to apologize and return the bag after the controversy, but she didn't. And if you think this is her first problem, don't say anything because you know nothing about Korean politics.

No cake was mentioned in French. Instead it was suggested the people eat BRIOCHE.
Brioche belongs to the category of food ne pastries called "Viennoiserie" (from Vienna).
Since croissant is another sort of viennoiserie, it would more fitting to translate the phrase as, Let them eat croissants !

You don't need to ask. You just decline. You should know that there's anti corruption laws as the first lady and shouldn't be accepting anything that comes even close to the limit.
If she was smart she wouldn't have accepted anything, ever, just to be safe. No need to take such risks when you're already living the life. If I was the president I'd be furious she was so dumb and can cost him the top job.
It's not about the bag. It's about corruption and BREAKING THE ANTI CORRUPTION LAW.
Why don't you go steal some cheap shit from the store and see if the store owners make a fuss or complain to the cops when they charge you for it?
If you know SK, you will know that they have such laws for a reason. All their previous presidents except moon have been corrupt and stealing money and have been locked up in jail after massive public protests.
Anyone in SK in office should know better, the public is sick of this shit, along with rich upper class chaebols showing off their power and money when most Koreans are struggling just to make ends meet. Even the Samsung bosses kid ended up going to jail for some corruption shit.
She should be lucky if she doesn't go jail. He should disown her, tell the cops to charge her or whatever and do the time she deserves.

Just like India, they gained independence around late 1940s but a series a military coups+ 1997 imf crisis hindered their political advancement and law enforcements. Their political ideologies are heavily based on Confucianism and also catering to mnc conglomerates(it can also be that these conglomerates control politics also) since these companies helped the country to recover their economy during the IMF crisis. So while they improved technologically and economically, their mindset as a nation therefore their politics remain stagnant
