Turkey's Altay Main Battle Tank has gone through a lot of changes since its initial reveal in 2012, and has come to be a very decent tank.

Solution 2: Blaming the tank for beeing bad
@@212thfives8 Yes, contrary to popular beliefs, tanks are basically mobile guns that are supposed to be used swiftly after suppression barrages to carry out their mission, rather than parade around and pose as targets for ATGM's in asymetric warfare. The reason why Turkey doesn't use the MTU engine is the Germans refusing to export us the engine. For political reasons. It's a long story. Also the project is riddled with a lot of delays and political issues. I hope that it will finally enter serial production in 2021 but I have my doubts. Anyway nice video as always.
Germany doesnt export that engine to your country for a good reason.
Thanks for Germany not to support us the engine so that our industry is working to cable of our own engine may be slowly but more radically like same as F 35 projects. We do our own TF-X projects , the first flight 2023-24, i think serial production will start in 2029. We start to produce our tanks right now , thanks god those embargoes are making my nation strong as steel.

That thing would probably not enter service, due to same reason the Armata didn’t receive 150mm cannon. The ammunition production will cost a lot.

I need to make a correction to the video. The first batch has not been yet delivered because of the problems with Engine delivery, but they will most likely be using a new SK engine that has recently been developed. www.defenseworld.net/news/27600/S_Korea___s_Locally_made_1500_HP_Tank_Engine_Ready_for_Launch__Eyes_Exports#.XzUf3pfVKUk
There is also still an issue of transmission that needs to be resolved.
Yep, Germany will not allow MTU to export to Turkey. SK K2 production got delayed due to indegenious powerpacks (substandard transmission). So, first batch used MTU powerpacks. 2nd batch used Korean engine with MTU tranny. 3rd batch?
They already have transmission its only the engine
@RedEffect
I guess the engine problem is quiet severe and the production of the Altay will be delayed for years or even terminated. This article is from a Turkish journalist from 26 of June 2020!
„Turkey’s inability to produce a fully indigenous engine is harming some of the country’s otherwise successful domestic defense programs, according to industry and government officials.“
“We had it 15 years ago, we had it 10 years ago and we are still having it,” said a former defense industry chief. “It’s our chronic engine problem.”
„BMC, a Turkish-Qatari joint venture that in 2018 won the serial production contract for the Altay, said in October 2020 that the tank would be fielded within 24 months. The original target was to have the Altay in the field this year 2020. Today, procurement officials and industry sources say even 2022 is an optimistic deadline.“
www.defensenews.com/industry/techwatch/2020/06/26/turkeys-chronic-engine-problem-is-harming-defense-projects-warn-officials/
@Clannie 184 The engine is not the biggest problem. Korea got an engine developed in short time. But Korea still labours to replace the original Renk gearbox with a home grown one with the same capability and reliability.
EU firms have stopped technical aid for the Altay project.
Guess Turkey must get a complete drive unit for the tank or use its 40 reserve drive units from Leo 2A4 for the first batch of Altays.

The first local engine made by BMC Power was succesfully started and run for 28 hours non-stop. Unfortunately it will take a long time till the final ğroduction variant will be available as they will undergo a lot of test to prove it's reliability. Till then they will use the power pack made by Korea for the K2 Black Panther (contract has been signed 2 months ago).
Before the Altay, Turkey was using the M48TT tank. The development of the Altay, which is named after a Turkish general, was a long time. It had begun in the 1990s.

Folks, i have a questions to all my tank friends.
Does someone know the reason why turkey does not use the korean auto loader (or something similar) and but a 4 th soldier insight instead?
Also does someone know if the altay can get an upgrade to Rheinmetall's 130mm smoothbore gun? Have you heard of any plans among this?
Otherwise it could be outdated soon in the eye of T 14
Not sure if Turkey can get a new gun from rheinmetall and if im not mistaken Turkey has licensing for the current guns. Its plausible if the relations go back to normal but if technology transfer gets refused by germans, Trukey is not even going to ask again. She is trying hard to produce every single military project locally.
Using an autoloader or a normal human being is just a choice that Turkish army made. They did not wanted an autoloader and Im sure they have their reasons, since not every mbt uses an autoloader.
Since ALTAY is a bigger version of the K2, which in theory could fit the Rheinmetall 140mm... i am pretty sure it can. However, german companies have stopped working with Turkey. Autoloader isn't needed for relatively light 120mm shells.
The MTU is made by Germany, and there seems to be a problem supplying it for political reasons (perhaps USA pressure as well). The proposed indigenous engine should is planned to produce 1800hp.
There are a lack of comments discussing the major cost issues associated with the Altay.
Do a stand alone video about k2!
Gotta fucking love that now the Arjun is a meme in the comment section so no matter how good a tank is its no match for the Arjun lmao
Turkey also had ordered DM-63 APFSDS for their Leo-2A4, when they got them, i am sure they delivered, i need to search for quantities but initially they ordered 10.000. the israeli ammo probably they got them when they upgrade the M-60T SABRA, with current turkeu-israel relations i dont think it get license to produce israeli ammo.
It's already changed bro
I have a question, nowadays, ATGM are so popular, which not make a armored vehicle with vertical ATCM launch systems, then pair that up with drones or satellites to lock on to enemy tanks? we all know that the roof armor of tanks usually have thin armor. so you can have a armored vehicle that launches ATGM vertically and then hit enemy tanks from the top. also this armored vehicle won't need a turret.

The reliance on German engines and transmission is the entire reason why the tank has been delayed for as long as it did. They are flatout refusing to sell them to us so Turkey is developing its entire engine package. The domestic engine is not cancelled and is well on its way to being developed, and not only that but an entire family of engines ranging from 300hp to 1800hp. The company responsable for developing the package already designed and made engines up to 1000hp. They are available online if anyone wants to see them.

not the gun but the engine yes, thats why turkey wants to build its own engine and it achived 1300 hp,but theres a lot of strugless to achive 1500 hp engine
It may cause a delay but i a positive turkey will find either an alterntive engine or try to build one itself. It will take some time and money but it is most certainly possible.

Good luck, it took the koreans more than 10 years to develop their own engine. And even for that own engine they do not have a locally developed transmission but have to use a Renk transmission!
„Hyundai Rotem signed a contract from the second batch of 106 K2 tanks in December 2014, but the vehicles continued to have powerplant issues due to the S&T Dynamics transmission failing durability tests. In February 2018, DAPA announced the second batch would have a "hybrid" powerpack consisting of the locally developed engine with the German RENK transmission system, allowing them to start entering service in 2019. An additional contract for the production of a third batch of about 110 K2s is to follow within the next several years.“

But their capability to manufacture these tanks is under scrutiny, Turkey doesn't have a very large heavy industry and their economy is failing, so they will probably not be able to produce these in very large numbers and it's even more unlikely that they will be able to export these
I think even though economy is falling it wont effect defense industry as long as factories are inside Turkey. Every country in the world will spend for its armed forces a lot no matter what.

xd what ? incompetence 'in using them' leopard 2a4's arent designed to fight in urban combat so they did poorly, but sabre was designed for that so sabre's plus turkish modernization of them did well, how is this even close to 'incompetent'?
Are you seriously calling the Turkish army incompetent? That's funny coming from an armchair general. It was expected that Leopard 2s could indeed survive ATGM strikes, however that wasn't the case. In an operation with limited air cover, Leopard's were used as line-of-sight artillery against ISIS. Just to be clear the Turks are the only one's apart from the SAA that fought ISIS on the ground. They killed 3000 of them.
Enes Kesicioğlu sitting on top of a hill getting blown up by an atgm fired from 2km away isn’t what I would call urban combat. NATO used older tanks like M1A1s or Leopard 1s much more successfully in asymmetric urban scenarios. Therefore it seems that tactical usage is the key factor in their failure.

why didn't they just use the 'applique armor' instead of Slat armor for covering the tank engine compartment as well as the turret's back section?
Weight concerns. Most likely the chance of getting hit in these sections is determined to be low enough that the lighter variant will suffice.
@@roadrunner6224 and i thought it had something to do with the exhaust smoke being trapped by the applique armor , or explody ERA near the engine or ammo rack
@@oaples8790 4.bp.blogspot.com/-lzfvGSP9y8k/Uk4xJUeuYLI/AAAAAAAAA2M/lSmrT6o35KA/s1600/hit+distribution+chart+1.jpg
Hit probability to the engine compartment is quite low, whereas most hits are to the turret and front glacis. So it's worthwhile to armour up the front 60 degrees of arc measured from the centre of the turret, hence applique on the front hull and front hull sides, as those attack directions can potentially put fragments into the crew compartment.
But an engine hit being not only unlikely but also not going to affect the crew, does not receive the same priority for armouring up.
It's also a problem for the weight of a tank as well since the power pack is going to be the single heaviest component in a tank and putting extra armour to the rear will upset its balance. So slat armour is often a good compromise because it pre-detonates shaped charges and reduces how much a tandem warhead can damage while keeping weight low.
IMO, Altay is essentially a tailored K2 Black Panther for the needs of Turkish armed forces and doctrine. K2 is an excellent base to work on because, let's face it. Turkey itself, does not have any tank designing or production experience.
As for the ammo stored within the hull of the tank, it's not the question of tanks survival itself, but it's crew!
No its not. Pretty much all systems of the tank are turkish developments. It is a completely new tank.
Still, the Koreans helped greatly in the development process. It was a good decision of the Turkish Government, to partner up with them.
@Ausgang of course. You cannot do something very complex without any previous experience in that field. Just look at India's Arjun mbt. It was in R&D for more than three decades before the actual production started. And it's still has plethora of flaws.
