  • Part 3 of a short series about a cycle tour I recently did from Chicago, Illinois to Lansing, Michigan. In this video I cycle the Kal-Haven trail from South Haven, Michigan to Kalamazoo, Michigan, and then decide to continue on towards Lansing.

Great video! How did you become so well known on plants? I’m always nervous to try berries/plants that I find on the road lol

Thanks! I had a former life as a working gardener and then just interest in foraging and nature. I don't know everything but some things stick in my brain. I think foraging is something where you start out small and then work your way up as your knowledge increases.

Would think the sunblock would be pretty important. Being a blond guy, I have to be on top of that one. I'd also be placing the importance of some riding cap or hat over a helmet with all that summer sunshine for so many hours per day. I'm also big on oats. I eat either the steel cut or the regular almost every day, with other things including eggs, meat, fruit, and some kind of bread, often with peanut butter. So I'm big on big breakfasts, especially with my regular exercise.

Yeah I agree about sunblock and also breakfast! Normally in my life I end up snacking on stuff in the mornings because I'm usually rushed but on cycle tour I definitely like to cook, and I eat quite a bit of oatmeal at home too. I can't remember the differences between the different types of oats but I use the Costco oats which are definitely not the quick cook kind, and I don't mind if they're still crunchy

@@spinningtrue Yeah the steel cut kind has a more nutty flavor and the texture is different. Takes longer to cook too, sort of like with brown rice. It's awfully good for a change though.

@@spinningtruespeaking of long trails, the kalhaven state trail is a part of the Great Lake To Lake Trail. It runs from Southaven to Port Huron, Mi. It’s about 280 miles long, in total. I’ve ridden it twice, in the last couple of years.

@@Murderbot2000 Oh interesting, there is a lot more out there than you think it's just hard to find info about it sometimes. I probably rode more of that trail on this trip, after getting to Kalamazoo I rode to Battle Creek before turning north
