I am not a Christian myself, but I love these videos. Thomist philosophy is so beautiful: he integrated seemingly incompatible concepts into a magnificent system.

Excellent disertation. I personally learn a lot and truly feel amazed at our faith, which is reasonable and in no contradiction with the true. May God bless the brothers for the charity, time and sacrifice in preparing and delivering these talks. Thanks very much!

I really wanted to understand this. But I just don't get it.
However, I HAVE experienced God's providence in my life, and it rocked me to my core. In a good way.

I love wathcing these videos!!! I consider myself a thomist, and thus this is really helpful to understand St Thomas even better!!! Thanks and keep up the good work!!! Btw, I "per accidens" met this channel, but as a true believer and a member of Schoenstatt Family, I know it's been the Divine Providence that led me here!!!

I'm a staunch Protestant, but Thomism is a breath of fresh air in the secular, physicalist world of modern Western philosophy. Even though I don't always understand all the metaphysical concepts and terminology that Thomism employs, I still find it beautiful.

I think the movie Jacob's Ladder (1990) may explain it so thoroughly...we're given the choices we make.

I swear Thomas Aquinas set the standard for systematic theology and all other theologies are just commentaries on his works.

If a contingent cause is one that truly happens by chance and our choices are contingent causes, then it follows that our choices truly happen by chance. How can I be more morally responsible for a choice that reduces to chance than for one that was predetermined and could not have been otherwise?

    • @alphazero5614
      @alphazero5614 Рік тому +1

There are some errors in your premises that lead to an incorrect conclusion. We must distinguish between two types of contingency - physical contingency and metaphysical contingency. While our choices may be physically contingent in that they are not predetermined, they are not metaphysically contingent in the sense of being "by chance" or random. The will is not subject to chance, but to reason and the moral law. Our choices are made within the context of our nature as rational beings endowed with intellect and will. We have the capacity for self-determination through our wills. Man has the power to act or not to act, to will this or that, and is therefore the principle of his moral acts. While our choices are not physically necessary in the sense of being predetermined, they are not random either, but proceed from our nature as free and rational agents.
For a choice to be truly morally imputable, it must be made from "deliberate judgment of reason" rather than by chance. Our choices bear moral weight precisely because we have the capacity, through our intellect and will, to weigh reasons and make rational decisions. We have "freedom of specification" to choose in accordance with or against right reason, and are thus responsible for the choices we make.

This video doesn’t touch on the extent of Gods knowledge in regards to per accidens causes.
Did God know the end result of the meeting at the store? If not, how is this any different than something like open theism (God of the possible), or molinism (middle knowledge)?

Excellent question! We have videos coming out on freedom (30 December) and predestination (1 January) that touch on these themes. If it's still unclear, or you're still dissatisfied, let us know and we'll chime back in. Cheers!

If I am understanding this video correctly, this sounds like this is the view of process structuralism, where the finetuned laws of nature that God(per se causes) created lead to the contingent causes we see today and if the universe where to start over again we would see the same result because of the natural laws created and finetuned by God. Is this your viewpoint?

Makes me think of the Lord of the Rings... Providence and Divine Destiny VS Chance when Bilbo comes across the Ring in Gollum's lair, or when Gollum "trips" and falls into the lava with the Ring in the Sammath Naur.

Does this mean chance events aren't really per accidens but part of the will of God? Does this mean chance doesn't exist?
    Edit
Does God know the outcomes of chance events? (Omniscience)
Can God cause chance events? (Omnipotence)
Is God capable of creaturely knowledge and action? Through Christ perhaps?
Are the misunderstandings or confusions about creation or God limitations with us or limitations on God?

    • @genekelly8467

God is omnipotent-he knows all..past present and future. So what appears to be chance is not.

Chance, random, coincidence, unknowns, these words are subjective as these only apply to humans and our ability or inability to see, or know, or understand.
