      Alex Rose yes yes pls do but I warn u don't start with season 1 episode 1. you'll just be like "what the hell is this show noo" I suggest starting with season 3 episode one, it's kind of less dark and graphic than the others but very gripping and a fascinating concept!

    • @NeworldDirector

      Alex Rose since they're all self contained u don't have to watch any in order, just whichever sound cool!

    I can't go see I, Daniel Blake... Because I'm waiting for the DWP to assess my benefits application and have no money atm. Can confirm that going through the disability benefits system is dehumanising and discouraging. :(

      I am deeply sorry to hear this. As a rich, educated white male with Parkinson's I had my hand held all the way through that process.
      But I found the forms near incomprehensible. The implicit attiitude in the language - instrumental, cold like an icy finger pointing accusingly at you- ugh! The expert Parkinson's Disease Society rep knew how to answer each question exactly. Without that help I don't know how I would have coped. I'm sorry I hogged the resource.
      I fucking hate medical charities.

    • @Lorandias

    • @fickledame
      @fickledame 8 років тому +3

      Bruce Bartup I'm so glad you had help. There is a huge gap in the system for those aged under 65, and who don't have a condition with a big medical charity attached. It's just awful. Getting DLA in the first place almost gave me a breakdown. Waiting my reassessment any moment. Shake and feel sick when a brown envelope comes through the door.

    • @brucebartup6161
      @brucebartup6161 8 років тому

      fickledame I'm glad you are glad.
      But I'm furious that you and so many others are in your situation. Especially when, as a result of the mechanics and culture of charity provision some of the most influential people are silenced by receiving special privileges.
      I've jolly good mind to - do something. But what?

    • @marygeorge96
      @marygeorge96 8 років тому

      Bruce Bartup thanks for the sympathy. I filled out the form by myself as the only national charity for my condition is so sparsely spread out I didn't want to contact them. Then there's the mental health side, at my assessment I had a breakdown and my assessor tried to send me to hospital. I had to convince her I'd be better off at home as my last trip to A&E made me wish I'd finished the job... So yeah. Not the best experience. And the physical tests she did, had no bearing whatsoever on my condition, as my range of motion is fantastic which is part of the problem having a connective tissue disorder... Sorry I'm just ranting here :(

    I am so happy you talked about "I, Daniel Blake." I went to see it and it's absolutely heartbreaking. That following week I went to a talk about equality and "i, Daniel Blake" was mention a lot and a lady who works for the welfare system talked to the audience and said that story isn't abnormal, that is exactly what it is like. This government is making the poor poorer and the rich richer. People need to be educated about this and understand that this isn't an overreaction, this happens every single day. Thank you Hannah for using your platform to talk about the things that really matter. Keep it up girl xx

    I am soooo intruiging by Lolita, I did my a level english coursework on it and it was really interesting to write about (my question was about whether a book being written from the perspective of a largely immoral and "bad" person can make the reader emphasise with them even though they know their behaviour is wrong) I compared it with a clockwork orange and it was just a really really deep and thought provoking topic

  • @renplatts

  • @Dreamgirlinc
    @Dreamgirlinc 8 років тому

    Men against fire - the one w the soldiers and the roaches is my fave. So moving and powerful. The themes of ptsd and the conditioning of soldiers to dehumanise the citizens of the country they infiltrate is so real and raw. and adding the emotional element of them being "sick" with inherent illnesses that we see right now as disabilities and things we sympathise - to turn that into a way of thinning out the population is so scary and upsetting. A lot of people said it was their least fave and it made me sad cause they couldn't resonate with it and that means the message isn't being validated to a wider extent? Idk I just think it's underrated and somehow that's dangerous as it was such a powerful episode

    Okay what great music tastes you have:
    I'm going to see Tove Lo next year! :D Tbh I bought my ticket to see their opening act, a new zealand band named Broods, that you SHOULD check out, they are amazing! So anyway I'm gonna listen to Tove Lo more now to be ready for the show :D
    I saw Bry 3 times opening for twenty one pilots in November and oh my god, I already loved him but he is so incredible live! His album is a fav of mine as well :D
    And of course dodie, my fav is When as well, I can't listent to it without tearing up a little bit, it just grips my heart and I'm always surprised when it ends (and then i listen to the ep again) (and again)
    Congratulations on the award!! Now you can brag about being the winner of best sex! ;D
    ps: if you talk to dodie, can you ask her if she's coming to Paris anytime soon? T_T

    I'm so glad the book was Lolita! I read it over the summer with a friend but we never discussed it. I thought it was a quick read, like once you got into it, but it was the topic that made it hard. And it's just -- it's not sexualizing her in the way you anticipate, and it was just a lot and I'm just so glad people I love are going to be discussing it AH

    You should watch One Mississippi on Amazon prime. It's a scripted show by Tig Notaro that is based on her life (so if you've watched her documentary, listened to her podcast, read her book, etc. you'll know most of the story). It's beautiful and heartbreaking with many quiet humor gems throughout.

    I'm pretty excited for the Banging Book Club video on Lolita, I've always been on the bench about reading it because of the Themes but then it isa classic and there's a reason for that so I may have to make time along with A Levels to try it

    URGH I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT SEASON THREE OF BLACK MIRROR so I had to pause and write this comment RIGHT NOW. The roaches episode and the finale probably got me the hardest. San Junipero was wonderful and a much needed change of tone and so beautifully bittersweet, and I just love the colours so much, it felt like an old photo come to life. I did feel like occasionally this season leaned a bit too far into the modern-parable-esque, slightly preachy area that Black Mirror skirts around, but a lot of it was horrific and dark and amazing. Especially the roaches episode. My god. And with the finale, IDK, it COULD have gotten a bit obvious and preachy and I guess I couldn't argue too much if somebody came away with that feeling for it, but because they had more time to build it up and up and up, the emotional impact was enough to push it over that 'ehhh' area and into 'pick yourself up the floor and stop crying'. It pretty much floored me.

      I think a lot of the "hmmm bit preachy" feeling I get from BM generally is a kneejerk reaction to the whole 'technology is killing society nobody talks anymore everything is manufactured' thing that's bloody everywhere so I guess it's more a 'your mileage may vary' situation

    I am SO GLAD that UA-cam are taking steps to make the comments section a safer place. Sometimes I've read the comments on your videos and been genuinely horrified. Nice video - always welcome recommendations for stuff from you!

    about the internet thing- unfortunately right now my phone is mainly something i use to take photos, so without it i wouldn't have that form of art with me all the time. when i finally get my own nice camera i'd love to try going internet free for a while!
