  • CO (carbon monoxide) is a colorless and odorless gas that can kill you. Having a CO alarm is extremely important. Many common house hold appliances such as heating systems, boilers, gas fire places, and cars have to potential to leak CO. In this video, I test different brands and models of CO detectors with actual carbon monoxide to see which one sounds an alarm first. Enjoy the video!

The nest protect is so smart it knew that this was just a test and no real danger... it only went off due to peer pressure.

These alarm are designed to only go off between 4 and 15 minutes of being at 400ppm. They are designed this way on PURPOSE. Why? Because they discovered people simply unplug alarms that go off all the time. So the industry agreed on the 4-15 minute and 400ppm standard (and that's what UL tests for). That is to say the alarms should not go off prior to 4 minutes and should not go off later than 15 minutes. All of the alarms showed here passed.

Wikipedia has some good explanation of how the home units measure cumulative over time , not absolute immediate level like smoke alarms ...here is some of it
" The alarm points on carbon monoxide detectors are not a simple alarm level (as in smoke detectors) but are a concentration-time function. At lower concentrations (e.g. 100 parts per million) the detector will not sound an alarm for many tens of minutes. At 400 parts per million (PPM), the alarm will sound within a few minutes. This concentration-time function is intended to mimic the uptake of carbon monoxide in the body while also preventing false alarms due to relatively common sources of carbon monoxide such as cigarette smoke."
They go on to say portable detectors are made that will give an accurate instantaneous reading of actual level.

@@SERSafety You improperly conducted the test. You should start it at a drastically increasing PPM or at 400 PPM at first, and those should alarm much more quickly. With the Nest I have it took like 2-5 mins to activate the CO.

You aren't supposed to suck out the air, plus you have to start it at 400 ppm already to do a valid test.

HI SER it seems your a firefighter ? I am trying to build a fire protection page I saw a video that showed that while a 2.5 lbs bc unit it says on that unit it takes 12 seconds to discharge but the video I saw stated that a dish towel only when out after 21 seconds so I guess that means it only must have worked after the agent lingered in the air for a while as a delayed reaction?? somethining that I would think would be interesting if you could do an experiment on as a future video that would help my page is if you were to get the special purpose kidde kitchen unit with cone and see what effect the cone type has on ability to extinguish a dish towel if you ever make such a video please send me a copy it will help my page please thank you!

Replace it with a nest protect, nest is better. BTW if it would react so fast to 200ppm it would be against code, he need to start the test at 400ppm or higher and it will wait for no more than 4 mins
