  • Encanto has slowly but surely risen to become one of Disney's most popular movies in the past few years. After its theatrical release and popping up on Disney Plus in December, the film has jumped up in popularity. Not just the film, but also the music too. The hit song, We Don't Talk About Bruno has become Disney's first song in 29 years, to become the number 1 overall song on the Billboard Hot 100. How did this happen? How did Encanto become such a success? Let's find out!

    Spoilers for Encanto.
At first, I thought the ending where the family gets their powers back was a little weak, but now I think it works very well. The rebuilding of the house symbolizes the family rebuilding their broken bonds and relationships over time. The magic returning was to show that they had finally come together as a healthy family again. So I think it works well as symbolism rather than the typical forced happy ending.

Encanto is another one of those Disney movies that has already gained its cult following, even though it was just released a few months ago.

If the unneeded action scene you're talking about is the Bruno tower scene, I would agree that they probably only slapped that in for the trailer.
But if you're talking about the casita breaking down, then I disagree, I think that scene was super necessary to give Abuela a slap in the face for what she's doing to her family. I also think them getting their powers back (after months of not having it btw. they lost their magic and rebuild casita themselves for probably months, maybe a year) is the right decision by the writers, cause if they didn't then the message of the movie will change to "You'll only be seen when you don't stand out".

I liked Encanto because now everyone knows my country Colombia.
Colombia is (or was) a very unknown country in the rest of the non-Spanish-speaking world, and the few foreigners who knew about Colombia only knew bad things about my country.

I'm so sad some people call it overrated now. We watched it last Dec. 13 and it was really rarely talked about until its release on Disney+. It deserves all of the attention and appreciation and it's definitely a classic for upcoming generations in the making for me.

I too am glad that this movie didn't try to be an epic action/adventure story like most other movies nowadays. It's such a breath of Fresh Air to have a slice-of-life story that explores a family's conflict, with no real Villain who's a world-wide threat like Ursula or Hades. Don't get me wrong, want new Disney Villains as much as the next guy, but I don't think this movie needs one.

I find this movie so therapeutic, honestly. I'm going to be honest, I went into watching it blindly, barely even watching a trailer, knowing the story plot, or knowing any songs, etc. Completely ignorant. That said, I know I wouldn't have watched the movie if I had known anything about it because I don't do emotionally well with the topics of abuse and trauma. I went through both and while I related a little bit to every character and the culture itself (I'm not Colombian, but I'm Latina), I related to both Mirabel and Bruno the most, and sadly, not in the best way. I was an emotional wreck throughout the whole movie, even in denial that Disney would take on such dark topics until I heard Luisa's song and accepted that the movie was taking the route that I feared watching. I like relating to these sorts of art, though. If it's done well, I find it therapeutic, but it covers delicate topics that need to be handled with care for me to enjoy it that much. If something is going to cause me to cry from making me feel like I'm reliving trauma, it better be executed well so that it doesn't maintain a scarring effect. This is why I tend to avoid such content; I really was so ignorant to this movie at first. I also had low expectations for true culture representations but was thrilled to see that Disney exceeded in this too and I was wrong to judge. I'm glad I was unaware of what the movie was about because I wouldn't have watched it otherwise. Disney handled it so well, though, and it's become my favorite movie. All this stated, there is a reason I'm just writing all this and that's because you say how you would've made it a sad ending. Oof! I'm all for sad endings; some of my favorite movies have sad endings and, realistically, a Disney movie will never have a sad ending (although it would be good if they actually did do one someday), but altogether this was not the movie to do that to. Numerous people who have been through generational trauma or general trauma have seen this movie and most of us love its relatability and felt it hit close to home. Some, like me, watch it now as therapy and are happy that our pain is acknowledged. If the ending were unhappy, then it would've been simply a depressing movie, forcing some people who watch this with trauma to relive their horrible memories and then end with an ugly tune of, "Well, life sucks, doesn't it? Hope we fucked you up enough!" That would be unjustified towards that sort of audience. To heal, we need acknowledgment and understanding with empathy. A sad ending in this movie would not have served justice. Also, the house represented the family's foundation and stability, so it definitely needed the family to rebuild it, as the movie is riddled with symbolism. I don't think I would've liked the movie if it had ended on a low note and I think if that were the case, Disney would've needed a severe trigger warning label for family trauma before the movie would be viewed. I do agree that the pacing of the movie was good, but then just quickly wrapped up in the end. Again, this is because, in real life, these situations tend to either take years to heal from or mend bonds and relationships IF they are even lucky enough to have these resolutions. This is a movie, though; a Disney movie that will have a decent amount of a child audience. A realistic ending would not be very possible to do, so I still think that the rushed ending was both necessary and understandable and the happy ending itself was much needed for people who need healing.

I actually had a similar idea for a dark ending. By the end of the movie when the house is crumbling and Mirabel is about to get crushed by the rubble, I was thinking, what if Mirabel died. Think about how TRAUMATIZING that would have been for the family, especially abuela to realize that they indirectly caused the death of someone who was part of their family, regardless of her not having a gift.

I can name a few modern Disney films I prefer over this one like both Frozen movies and Zootopia, I still had a great time with Encanto. I think one reason why it exploded in popularity when it went to Disney+ is because most of us are still hesitant on going back to cinema to see movies, unless it's No Way Home. The virus is still out there and movie theaters seem like a good place for them to spread. So it does make sense why it went like this, but hey, it found its audience through some method which is awesome.

But this it was nice, no annoying character I liked the songs I like the scale for the plot and that the focus was on the right stuff. I did´t need to know what year this was or who the riders were, not important. Even if they are doomed if they are living in a Great Valley kind of land where no one can get in or whatever XP
