    put a water retaining saucer under w-about a 2-4in edge, so any leached nutrients will remain in it after watering, then the plants can absorb the flush nutrients from the bottom, by watering the saucer this will allow the roots to grow deeper letting the plant reabsorb the nutrients flushed into the saucer, i hope its understandable...

    I have a thing to share! I don't know if it's because I got lucky, because I always attend my plant or because my fertilizer or potting mix are good but I wanna share my thoughts on why my almost 10 months old orange seedling hasn't had nothing but deep green leafs his entire life. My way of watering him is through bottom watering, however, I somehow got to a point where I know my plant so well I know exactly how much water it needs every time, and so when I bottom water I put the exact amount of water in the dish and my seedling drinks it all, and is very happy and therefore, because the water never actually gets drained from the pot and is actually absorbed by the pot like a sponge, the nutrients don't get flushed out and so Josh never runs out of nutrients until his next feeding. In order to determine how much water your plant needs I usually put enough in the dish so that when I stick my finger into the soil it's wet until the top. It doesn't have to be dripping wet and the very thin layer of soil above doesn't necessarily have to get wet (that part of the soil usually becomes somewhat hydrophobic after u stop top watering but as long as your finger feels wet soil after a little scrape means you're good to go).

    Very informative, thank you. I live in Southern Italy and temperatures get very hot in the summer. I have about 30 citrus fruit in big pots. I placed cardboard on top of the pot and cut round to the exact shape with a box cutter to fit the pot (2 layers) and the covered it with wood chips. The difference in the amount of watering I have to do is amazing. They hardly need water. This has many benefits. 1. Much less watering and therefore less work. 2. Less extremes between dry and wet and therefore less shock to the plant 3. less water (important to me as my water is from the mountain, not mains water and I only have a 500 litre tank) 4. Less likely to dry out as the process is much slower 5. Keeps the soil cool 6. Stops weeds growing in the pots, which use the water and nutrients meant for the plants. 7. Less time spent weeding 8. The cardboard and wood chips eventually breakdown, releasing nutrients. Obviously, when breaking down, wood chips sequestrate nitrogen (to be released later) but this is not such a problem if the wood chips are not mixed in with soil. I only did this about a month ago, when the leaves of my trees were already yellow all over but I added nitrogen at the same time and now the are much more greener trees in general. Some leaves are still yellow, as you pointed out but overall, the difference is black and white. Another problem I have is leaves curling up and being wrinkly. It’s not the same as sunburn and I’m guessing it’s some disease or parasite. Any input there? I’ll be looking at that next but nay advice would be much appreciated.

    Well, how about overwatering and overfertilizing aspects?
    Some sources claimed that both of them are also the causes of leaves turning yellow.
    Nice and clear explanation btw, Sir.

    • @qctropicals
      @qctropicals  2 роки тому +13

      Over watering falls under reason #1. Everytime you water, water leaches the nutrients away from the potting mix causing chlorosis. The water itself does NOT cause the yellowing of the leaves. Over fertilizing looks similar to reason #3 and will happen within days of fertilization. Extremely uncommon unless you really screw up. I have yet to over fertilize any of my trees.

    Hello I am in Mesa Az and just got a Potted Lemon tree around 4 yrs old, I want to go now keep it in the big pot its in to grow it alittle more and maybe transplant it down the Sierra Vista area in a year, Problem is the leaves are beginning to turn yellow and some brown and curling around the edges and falling of the tree. I was told to water it heavily 2 to 3 times a week in the summer. Am I watering it too much? Does it need more nutrients? I have it in the direct sunlight all day from sun up to sundown, is it getting too much of this burning sun?

    I am in the Phoenix area too, and have an Oro Blanco tree that has been very productive for the last 10 years. It's about 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide. This summer was very hot, and I have found that many of the leaves are yellow and dry. Some of the branches have damage to the bark with peeling and sap coming out, and the ends are looking dry and dead. And several of the fruit this year are small , hard and yellow , so I know they will not be good. Some others look normal and a good size of about 5 inches wide, so it should be okay to harvest in the next couple of months. I watered it deeply 2x weekly through the summer, and have cut that back to 1x weekly now. I recently gave the tree a couple pounds of citrus food (nitrogen based).
    I have been cutting off the dead branches and removing the hard small fruit. Is there any treatment for the peeling and damaged bark areas? Is this due to sunburn or some bacteria? Thanks

    • @qctropicals
      @qctropicals  6 місяців тому +1

      buddy, your tree needs water, 6ft in 10 years confirms this. I have a ruby red it's like 10ft in just about 3 years. No treatment needed just water and make sure that water penetrates that soil at least 5ft. It will take 1-2 years for you to see results.

    Love, love your channel; subscriber. Hope you can answer this one. An unusual series of events for my baby Meyer Lemon living in Fl., zone 9A.
    May: New 2' tall Meyer lemon put in a self watering container. Tree has 3 stems from the graft, all are close to soil level. 50/50 Garden Soil+Compost w/perlite to lighten it + Osmocote delayed release fert. Pine bark mulch topper. I water w/Miracle Grow from the top til water run out holes in container, 3" from bottom.
    July/Aug/early Sept: most days 90°+ temps, full sun 7am-6/7pm. Put out many new stems (groups of 3 and singles).
    Late Sept: We had an unusual cold night, 47°, 1 new leaf curled, leaves on new stems never greened, are limey green, not flaring out, staying tight to stem. Old leaves still gorgeous lush green. Left it. It started putting out buds.
    Late Oct: Limey leaves same. I put container citrus fert stakes in (Jobe's, 3"long). Budding like crazy. No more Miracle Grow in water.
    Mid Nov: No change (limey leaves). It's budding like crazy. Tree now about 36+" tall and very wide.
    Should I leave it alone?
    For 3 Stems from graft: should I leave all 3 or remove 1? In the spring?
    Will much appreciate a response.
    I am known to kill plants with too much love.

      Yes too much love. Lay off the fertilizer for a bit. Winter is here, no top growth is normal. Water only wen 50-75% of the potting mix is dry especially during winter. Other than that, lemons are the easiest to grow. You really don't need all that fertilizer. As for the branches; citrus are bushes not trees. If you want a bush, leave the branches alone. If you want a single trunk then prune and just leave one. Thank you for your support!

    With nitrogen, Do you or any friends use human Urine &Water mix?

      Yes, I know someone who uses diluted pee. If your trees have the nutrients they already need, switching fertilizers should show no difference. Before he started using pee, he was putting compost in the soil.

    We have a problem with cats using where we planted our lemon tree as a toilet. What can be used to keep the cats away? No, the tree has not born fruit yet, it's flowering presently.

      Most effective way is to fence off the area.

    Sorry dude my plant is growing in the ground, well watered and under partial shade still the leaves are turning yellow all over the plant, not helpful.

      I hear that generalization all the time, "well watered". How old is the plant? how fast does your soil drain the water?. Have you sprayed anything on it?. Another possibility is the soil is always wet leeching the nutrients away from the plant. So many variables, if you're looking for an answer specific to your tree sorry dude you're not gonna find it.

      Does the sun shine in your area?. Do plants drink water in your area? Do your plants NOT require food to survive in your area?. Information in this video applies to all plants on planet earth. What planet do you live in?

    We have dominion over our earth, if you're a child of the Most High, Creator God Almighty and have accepted Jesus Christ of Nazareth as your Lord then you can command it to grow, heal, produce etc. Also they love hearing scriptures and classical music.
