It refers on all Jody Jazz mouthpieces? Because they are all easy to play or “free blowing”!? What about HR JJ? Or Jet?
I disagree. it is nearly impossible to get certain sounds out of a saxophone without specific properties. Jumbo Jazz gets sizzle (extreme baffle), can get nice low freq, gets some ebonite woof? (not good), lacks metal sustain,
The super jet gets sizzle, not as rich low freq, no woof, nice sustain, not as rich tones as durga or jody jazz Chi.
Both are good. imo. For my tastes I would go with jody jazz. I got to have sizzle and sustain and zero woof. Only certain designs and materials will get that. Or putty to add to baffle. I didnt even mention intonation. IMO spend what it takes to get what you want. Be sure you know what you want first.

That’s an “H” lig ! I have several of these and got these from Mr Harrison himself back in the 80’s . He came in to the music store I was teaching at the time and wanted me to try them out and in exchange for my feedback , I could keep the ligs ! I’ve got them for Clarinet, Alto & Tenor ! I don’t use them all the time but they are still among my favorite ligs ! Thanks Mr. Harrison!
Agreed on your summary on the mouthpiece. I could never play any modern Jodyjazz on tenor and be happy with it. The now discontinued ESP is the only Jodyjazz that works for me, and it my backup next to a HR Link. Them links do make you work your sound up, which is better in the long run, in my opinion.

I agree with you on the H ligature. I have a JodyJazz HR* 6M alto mouthpiece and use Legere signature reeds and couldn't get the ligature to fit quite right and when I tried a Rovner dark ligature instead, it felt instantly better, easy to take on and off, didn't slip off at any time and with the H , even when fully tightened it would slip and I was sometimes getting a squeak when I played but not with the Rovner.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one with problems with that thing
Sounds hard to control. And you're right. The Vandoren ligature made a huge difference. I just got a Drake NY Jazz. I think you would like it. I have problems with the altissimo, but, I don't practice (my bad).
I've been looking into some Drake smooth jazz pieces but I haven't decided on which one yet.

I had bought this mouthpiece and ended up selling it. The ligature gets better over time as it conforms to the shape of the mouthpiece but I still found it to be a pain in the ass.

That lig appears to be like the Rico or d'addario H style ligature.. I got a tenor and alto ones that came with mouthpiece purchases.. Nice solid ligatures but a pain in the ass to keep centered when tightening down the reed.. But I recently picked up a vintage brihardt that it seems to work with..
@09:47, Your 'bad/con' commentary was Right On! That is, pointing out that a product-- designed to such 'perfection' (I hesitated using that term)-- that one developing his/her tone, (as well as sharpen an individual sense of discernment), might wind up NOT putting in the necessary work in order to achieve such nuanced skills. That philosophy is almost like finding a decent reed to work with: I want just enough 'give' that I get a sound that I DON'T start altering my embouchure , but I don't want that thin sound that shoots rapidly through the horn, but has no real core. As ALWAYS, very helpful video.

Thanks for the great review man. I always liked this mouthpiece but I couldn't afford it, so I decided to make a "compromise" and get a jumbo Java instead. But after this video I changed my mind about the super jet and I'm happy I got the Jumbo. Keep the awesome videos coming!
I think the jet mouthpiece is better. I like it. I like the sound.
Check out the Wanne Kali mouthpiece, if you can find one, it was his first high baffle piece. Too bad he moved on from that design, Theo can’t stop tinkering, he’s always changing a good thing.

I'm with you on the ligature thing. The Rico Harrison copy imo just doesn't fit the pieces well. I have a Jody Jazz Norteño (discontinued) that I had to go with a Rovner. They don't hold the reeds to the piece well at all. Thanks for the review. BTW your chops really show the work/time invested in getting your sound.

Bright edgy mouthpiece that I’ve found works well for me is the Rico Metalite. Any thoughts on them, I know they’re meant to be student mouthpieces but they perform fantastically imo

one could say this is a dukkoff copy, also it has a similar straight baffle drop like a theo wanne Durga, and Durgas are sweet, i was considering this MP till you pointed out the defects, nope off the list
I would still recommend that you try it but make sure you know what the return policy is. Many people have commented to me that they played this for a while and then sold it though.

Part of the issue with Jody Jazz is that you need to use a much thicker reed than usually because the mouthpiece has a secondary window under the reed. If you use 3 1/2 go to 4 1/2
there is the added resistance of the stiffer reed though that makes it more difficult to play

Hey, thanks for the review. I’m looking to get a new mouthpiece for bari only because my vintage link was so damn expensive that I could make a lot of money just by replacing it with practically any other mouthpiece. My primary consideration is projection, because my regular Meyer just doesn’t cut it in my loud brass band. Soon after I joined my band, I sought out the only four metal bari mouthpieces in the NYC (besides the new Link, which I had already tried and sold)... two of them were unimpressive, the Berg Larsen I could barely get a sound out of, but the vintage Link just sang. But even the Super Jet is far cheaper than that one.... but you’re saying it didn’t project that well? The Jumbo Java isn’t available for bari. Is there another model you would suggest? Alternately, is there a particular facing size you would recommend? I play a vintage Conn with a 5* Florida model Link and sanded 3 reed.
The Super Jet is really good at being able to hear yourself when you play and I found it really easy to play with the facing that I chose. I primarily had problems with the ligature, the price, and the baffle design. I felt like the baffle hindered the upper register too much for my taste BUT... that was for tenor. On Bari, I would primarily stay in the low and middle range on that instrument so my impression could be quite different. I haven't tried this on Bari so it might be worth finding out what the return policy is and seeing how long you can try one before you decide to keep it.

Just got this exact one and it came today and my first time playing it I squeaked. The only notes I was able to get out were extremely sharp. What am I doing wrong?
Dear Sirvalor, your views on modern sax mouthpieces are spot on. Most of them are all baffle, meaning brightness without richess. If it's sheer volume one is after, then the king super Guardala is probably the best bet. It's practically ALL baffle; and whilst being useless for jazz, it's as loud as Donald Trump and just as subtle - which is useful if you want to compete against wild rock and roll rhythm sections. Otherwise like you say, it's best to buy a link or a vandoren (metal v's particularly) and hit the woodshed. Congratulations on your knowledge and love of the instrument and your solid approach to the altissimo register. Keep up the fine work!

What size Vanduren jumbo java mouthpiece do you use?
Has this reed used the REEDCURE reed case? I bought a REEDCURE on Amazon and I feel better after the sterilization.
I don't use mine as a storage device. I use mine to sanitize my reeds and then I store them in the plastic Vandoren container.
Hi - I have a more basic mouthpiece question. I enjoy all your mouthpiece comparisons, but I just want some basic info on openings. I've been playing the tenor for about 8 months, using a Yamaha 5C and a 3 reed. I think I'd like to see if a larger opening will improve my sound. So, should I just go with a relatively cheap 7 or 7* mouthpiece, or is this the time to look for that more expensive mouthpiece that I may use for the next few years? And will my local music store let me test a good number of mouthpieces to find one? thanks.
I would highly recommend the Rico Metalite mouthpieces. They have a super low price point ($30) and they compare very nicely with the sound of much more expensive pieces. I would check out the M5 or the M7. Some music stores are different from others. One music store actually wanted me to buy a flute before I tried it and wouldn't let me try a cheap $300 flute!! Most online stores have a trial period where you can return it for a full refund if the facing is too open/close or you just don't like it. They may charge a cleaning fee and still let you pay for the shipping though. Be sure to clarify the details before you buy. Good Luck!!

I use the Selmer Teeth and Mouthpiece saver ones. I have only seen them in music stores and not online though

hello maestro I have question for you have you ever had pain of your right hand from playing to much saxophone, I play sitting position and can't take that pain anymore its sharp pain coming from upper back right schoulder and traveling to all right hand please lmk if you experienced something like that thank you !
I wouldnt say all high end modern pieces are for amateurs. Ted Klum pieces are certainly used by a lot of musicians
I've been trying to find some used Ted Klum pieces around but I haven' t had any luck for the price I'm looking for.

I bought the Jody jazz super jet 7 and it sounds amazing. The only thing is that you have to make sure the upper range gets a full bodied tone as the low and mid range do. Theo Wanne metal pieces sound pretty amazing too.
V16 is much better sounding, but, all in all, the stock Otto Link NY 8 w/ Green box #2's on my Canonball Alcazar "student" horn is the best combo ever. Better even than my YTS 85 Custom. You sound better with your Link, as well.
There's this debate about reeds getting "married" to the specific facingcurve of a mouthpiece after a couple hours of playing and thus not working so great on another mouthpiece anymore. Just thought about that when you messed around with the Vandoren lig and the reed that you'd played on the Vandoren. Any opinion on that ? Great sound anyways
In my opnion its not the reed to the mouthpiece but the reed to the ligature. All my reeds have an indentation of the place where the ligature holds it. Also, I graduate my reeds to different mouthpieces once they get too soft on one. For example, I'll start on a low facing mouthpiece and once the reeds gets too soft I'll move it to a more open, more resistant piece.

I tried a Jody Jazz Superjet 8* and it was a one trick pony. Bright but not powerful enough. It was similar to the Theo Wanne Shiva. I'm Still Playing my Dukoff D7 I bought in 1998 because it's much louder and fuller sounding than these over expensive mouthpieces that promise to do everything including make you pancakes, are just one trick ponies. Your Vandoren sounds much nicer to me.
It's a shame because I really like pancakes!! LOL. I'm looking into some kind of Dukoff to replace my older ones
The Vandoren Jumbo Java is a killing MP. I'm not sure if there's a better MP on the market for the $. For me, the shape of the beak on the Jumbo Java is too sharp/steep. I was planning on trying the Jody Jazz Jet (Ebonite) MP--I don't like metal MPs. What do you think about Claude Lakey's? I used Claude Lakeys for some time, but they tend to play out of tune in certain registers on the Saxophone.
I plan to maybe get another Jumbo and work on it myself for the same reason. Or, I'll work on my T55 and get a T45. I haven't played a Lakey alto in many years and I've never played a tenor one. They do seem very affordable though. Hmmm
@@Sirvalorsax With Claude Lakey, the sound coming out of the MPs is more compact and focused with smaller tip openings. When you get into a size 8* and 9* with bigger tip openings, the sound spreads a lot more and is more 'full' sounding. For Tenor, I was using a size 8*-9*. For Alto, size 5*-6* was my favorite size. 5* is probably the most popular for Alto players. For Soprano, size 4*-5* was my favorite. I don't think Claude Lakey is making Soprano MPs in size 4* any more. For reeds, I had best results with Cane Reeds. Java Greens and Alexander Superial Reeds in the yellow box did really well. Claude Lakeys can be great, but they tend to run sharp in tuning. If you can get that under control, they're fantastic MPs for the money, very versatile MPs.

@@Sirvalorsax Love your channel! You're putting out great content. I had a medical condition I had to recuperate from. I started playing again, hope to have some uploads coming in time soon. If you decide to do anything on Claude Lakeys, experiment with them and see what you find. Claude Lakey has the Apollos line of MPs, in both metal and Ebonite. I tried the Ebonite Apollo and didn't find that much of a difference in sound from their standard MPs.
Jody Jazz recommended this to me based on their on line survey. My answers to the survey indicated I liked bright, and was playing boomer rock stuff, and bluesy rock stuff. But I just about couldn’t get any sound out of it at all. I had to blow hard to get a sound. No benefit on altissimo at all. I couldn’t play any of the radical baffle mp’s JJ recommended. I decided that I’m not good enough for their mp’s. I was fortunate to be able to return them to the retailer for a small cleaning fee. Still loving my D’Addario Select Jazz HR 7.
I'm a pretty experienced player and had the same experience with a theo wanne gaia. I was playing on a metal super tone master at the time then tried a gaia with the same tip opening and couldn't for the life of me get any sound out of it. It was the strangest experience of my sax playing life. I then changed the position of the contact point on the gaia's built-in ligature back by one notch and just like that I was back to my normal chops, playing the instrument as normal....
So weird things can happen with sax equipment that leads to problems, even factors as miniscule as the ligature position. In any case, I wouldn't be too quick to conclude that you simply aren't good enough to play on a high end jody jazz mouthpiece. It could have been an accessory issue.
All you had to do was go down in strength of the reed, Jody recommends using a softer reed on the super jet to get a better response and from my experience I can say the same thing

Mindi had a terrific sound out of the Oleg. I had one, best alto piece I ever had. Damn, I sold it. I cant imagine why Mindi switched. How can you improve on perfection???

@@vincentgaglio5106 I had a alto maestro. I have not tried contempo. I am thinking about getting one. I love oleg ligatures as well. I had oleg tenor mouthpiece before contempo came out. Was too free blowing for me. The alto MP was the best I have had. And abair and lington sound is superb using oleg.

@sirvalorsax I’m not gonna lie I found that the 200 dollar polycarbonate jet was alot better
I tried it for tenor and compared to the superjet it felt more natural

Respect to all the manufacturers out there, but MB mouthpieces are like Brough Superiors, once you used one nothing else really has any appeal. IMHO.
Soft reed sounds better
I have SuperJets for soprano, alto tenor and baritone- I used to be a Dukoff fan to boot, until I noticed the metal corroded and damaged very easily, plus extremely inconsistent from piece to piece. These SuperJets seem to be very high quality, play very well right out of the gate, and are the mouthpieces the Dukoffs could never seem to be.The ligatures are sort of cheap, but they'll work. The ligature on the baritone took some refitting and stretching, the cap for that went in the trash can, terrible fit.(I took a #5 Rovner cap, resized it in boiling water, works great.
The sound quality is not very good.
why compare the superjet and metal v16 when they’re totally different. a better comparison would probably be a theo wanne shiva or something else with a high baffle
