Heard "Spectrum" the first time, when I was 14 years old, roughly 42 years ago. Well, a very lasting impression.
Great presentation music and musicians!!!
The first drummer I ever saw play live was John Bonham with Zep, and I was blown away. But when I subsequently saw Billy Cobham at an outdoor concert (early '70s,) I was absolutely FLOORED. His power and complexity in that performance set a benchmark which stands untouched to this day.
Can't compare Zep's "Rock," with Billy's Contemporary, or Progressive Jazz.😑
@@stephengolden6080 Miles Davis in the 1980s grabbed/ stole the drummer Ricky " Sugarfoot" Wellman (RIP) from Chuck Brown's band (GoGo genre) and the rest is history. .At the time Ricky was the
" Bonzo" of the GoGo beat especially known for his booming bass drum..Even Ricky didn't think the marriage would work but it did..I'm not disputing your point, but it would have been amazing to see Bonzo before he passed collaborate with someone in another musical arena like Miles or Chick Corea. I believe Bonham could've pulled it off.
For me it was early 70s. Billy on Deodato's Prelude album, Sprach Zarathustra track and then Billy again on Deodato's, Whirlwinds album. Been hooked on Billy ever since!
@@willf.5608 maybe! but there is only one drummer from rock that is an all around to drummer. That is Steve Smith from Journey.
All other rock drummers are just that, rock drummers. So with Bonham dynamics possibly. We will never know.
But history has shown rock drummers are just that, rock drummers.
MUSIC, it "s just MUSIC. So unbelievable experiences.
Only one Bonzo, only one Billy
יפה מאוד! שלום ממאכסיקו
One time in the concert 🙂
Great class*
Need guitar for this track
they playing in a library?
Or a Church
Triplet Phonk
Bill doesn't play for money, doesn't play for fame, he plays for the audience. For me the best of 3.
Amazing to think Billy Cobham is playing for such a small intimate crowd, how fortunate they are to be a part of his playing.
Saw him with the duke in small venue.
Grandioso ymagestuoso esta melodía gran calidad estilo calidad y presencia
nice billy to go and play in a country where black women are sterilized and where black blood donations are refused. is not luther king who wants
I sax him playing at the blues café in London early 90s. What a pleasure! Years late in Buenos Aires 2008 a master.
Note how gently Billy plays..almost as if he is just touching the drums and cymbals
The open handed technique helps not crossing the hands, love the subtle transition quite a bit more to this that appears at first. Light but tight.
Many drummers dating from the 1970s to today owe their careers to the innovations and sound they copied from Mr. Cobham, whether directly, or indirectly from people who emulated him.
Dear God! How can there be war when you have stuff like this!🙏
Brilliant comment and so true too!
Lost temple, here it is, hear it, is
You found me! You found me!
But not many do (or care to look!) 😊
Because some people can not see that when we look at others no matter race ,creed, color they don't recognize themselves or the beauty that can come from being cohesive .
great drummer..very nice humble man..all in all...quite rare today. 10/10 for sir William
I first heard Billy Cobham about 35 years ago when he played on, of all things, a Grover Washington album. I had bought it to hear Grover but it was Cobham that blew me away - he was doing some very out there drumming.
Exactly James! So did I!
Done it before and still around doing it, that's the mark of a Legend. Billy at your current age you can still kill it. Way to go beautiful chops.👌
one of the greatest of all time. A game changer for sure
Brave or what!!!! Ya know when you’ve heard the original with everyone in there . I think this is a great 3 man version, nuff said!
Billy is pure class!
Top shelf musicianship right there.
"Billy Cobham's Master class" ... This is not a false statement ...
Cobham - legend. Amazing drummer.
Billy would have made a great pick pocket! he gets into the pocket and you do not know how he got there!
Lol!!!
As Billy says, "Either you're all in or you're all out."
Take it back to the good old days, when Fusion was Fresh, Funky and Fun!!!😎😎❤️❤️
Grand artist,great Master very talented
Billy will always continue to inspire me to keep going. Great vibe from these 3. Keep goin people, we gotta keep it movin!
I think its more like a jamm...and unrehearsed..ther still awesome..I cant even do half of the shit they do😆🤔😉😌
I saw him at a clinic in 1987. I believe that he had just started arranging his tom toms in that non descending order. I didn't understand that concept until I read an Interview with him. That night understand it or not, he totally blew my mind. I had never seen anybody that ambidextrous before in my life.
Probably because he is a lefty.
Class. Dignity. Soul. Thank you very much for posting this.
saw the great man do a clinic in the 70s, flares and all?
I'm enjoying hearing Cobham in a small room unmiked, lol.
9 people are ... deaf ? ;-)
I love the song, but the sound of Hi-hat cymbals is terribly ugly ...
Billy, I love you!....how can you not?
You know you're Master Class, when you're in the Master Class...
With zero effort.
He came to Indy on his Spectrum 40th anniversary tour, just before he turned 70. Awesome!
Such a gracious pro. Playing with guys at 99% accurate time he made it work and the audience was none the wiser.
Long ago, Billy was a big time, old school bebop drummer. You can find video.
Uff awesome music/tres great music/❤👍💥
Unrehearsed.
Have been listening to an early track Billy did for the free design called friends. Has a great buildup
That is a bad bad sounds i love it
Smooth as butter.
I played this tune in many bands! Love the album Spectrum.
Those plexiglass drums sound great.
oh men
A legend.
i love billy,i see those aviator shades n afro !
Great to see these Grandmasters who still like getting back to the basics, just a minimal set up and play for only a few.
🔥🔥🔥
So cool
I think they know his stuff
can Ive that drum set,,see I like what he likes... I want be Cobham Jr.. Ali
Amazing drummer
Billy is a genius
Billy is South-Paw but but playing his set regular for a Right-Paw! Thank you for understanding?
Look at His Tom's .They, go opposite in sizes from right to left also .He did this for yrs. Yet,guys tend to argue w./ Me . -Not You , He is an open handed ambi player . etc.
A true battery machinist
この人とか、デニス・チェンバースみたいに、ロック、ファンク畑の人が演奏するジャズはあまり好きではない。
When I First Heard Billy Cobham in 1975, He was Then and Still am The No#1 Out There for Me. I ran And Bought his LP Magic and Spectrum. His Mastery on His Drum's Blew Me Away. Keep on Drumming Mr. Cobham.
Mmmmmm, Billham Cobly... 😁
Took my 16 year old brother to see Billy for his birthday. It was 1976 and he was playing ' The Mainpoint' in Bryn Mawr, PA. We sat in old school desks and had front desk seats. After his rimshots we found ourselves brushing stick chips from our laps.
I heard that Herbie lick
As bandleader, drummer, composer and arranger Billy Cobham is immaculate.
I have attended a masterclass in Arnhem in 2011 where he generously taught and demonstrated for a small audience at the Conservatory.
ndo state ini svissera?
How's that keyboardist and bassist? Bit of Jaco and BJ there. What more can we say of Billy that hasn't been said? Awesome🤗
absolutely jaw dropping!
SUPER
SUPER
Lovely
Billy Cobham album - ALIVEMUTHERFORYA 10/10
Buddy, Ginger, Billy, Elvin. After that, it doesn't really matter.
Cool!!!
Meeting Billy Cobham after a show in Heidelberg Germany when I was in High School in the mid 70's was one the highlights of my life. Funny seeing here he is playing a fiber glass set like he did the night I met him. I used to blast his music all hours of the day and the neighbors never complained. About 6 years later, I met Buddy Rich leaning against a USA Today News stand in Georgetown!!! I've been blessed to meet all of my music and sports heroes...Thanks for taking the time to talk with me and my late friend John, Billy!!!
Saw BCB in Stockholm Sweden on a few occasions. Not only are the band excellent but the music is very enjoyable
Браво!!
Always bringing it..
05:27 just a casual head scratch right before getting back to theme LOL Billy
Really nice Bass Solo.. bravo for the bassist!
That left hand man! It’s a human metronome. He is a true GOAT.
oy vey!
Cobham was 70 when he did this video??? Nice!!
Who plays keyboards?
The great Avi Adrian
Damn! Bill Cosby got mad skills!!!!
Hm, with all due respect to one of my heroes. But that was long time ago. I certainly love him as a person, but his playing is not any more what I adore about him. Billy without his fabulous rolls is not quite my piece of cake
His feel and his groove are still outstanding!
Killer whether 6 7 piece or 3 never ever ever gets old matter if fact this is more with less
Waouw..
Olivier Lefebvre do da dododo da da dododo do da dododo
Meraviglioso!!💓👊😈👍🥁🥁🥁
That was a long 6 minutes.
Layin it down like butta 👊😎
The master who took open handed playing to new heights. I see so many traditional masters go to open handed play to save on their wrists with tendon issues. Master Cobham has been playing on like Simon. I need to find master players who have introduced open handed playing to newbies like me to get me going the right way.
He plays multiple grips for different applications. What he used in this video is French grip where palms face each other and fingers manipulate the sticks. If you’re a newbie concentrate on whatever grip your comfortable with and try different grips later on. I use matched grip for speed of single stroke rolls. Classic grip for most everything else. That grip doesn’t damage wrists more or less. My wrists are fine after playing for 60 years. Just tire more easily.
Bass nice
Boring organ, sorry...
Beautiful
Sie haben's drauf .
Fantastic! 💥
un maestro de la batería
What a treat!
Fantastic
Aerosmith used to open for Mahavishnu in their really early days of touring. Joey Cramer said when he saw Billy play that he couldn't believe that they played the same instrument. I know how he feels!!!
So Joey Cramer felt like me - not only in those days! Cobham´s drumming was and is of the third kind in general and particular with MO.
Also saw Aerosmith open for the MO, quite a contrast in music and styles
amazing song. free palestine
