  • After having made several videos on Character Actors in Westerns now. I thought today I’d make one more, but on the ladies. The often overlooked important roles that help keep a good western together. Usually the mother, girlfriend, wife or maybe a sister or cousin.
Nonetheless important and vital to any storyline.
Let me know who your favorite is, if you guys like this one I will make a followup as usual.

Great selection of fine actors here! Good character actors, male or female, are the backbone of any good Western.
You're right about Mildred Natwick being a scene stealer. My first exposure to her was her role as Griselda in The Court Jester. The scenes where she hypnotizes Hubert, and later attempts to instruct him where the pellet with the poison is, are some of the most fun/memorable in the film!

Here are some favorites no particular order except number one:
1: Myrna Loy: The Great Divide: She was secondary to Dorothy Mackaill ( but should not have been).
2: Patty Shepherd: The Man Called Noon
3: Diane Foster: The Violent Men.
4: Edna May Oliver: Drums Along The Mohawk
    5: Michelle Carey: El Dorado
6: Hope Emerson: Westward The Women
6a: Hope Emerson: Guns of Fort Petticoat.
    7: Allison Hayes: Mohawk
    8: Denise Darcel: Vera Cruz
9: Carroll Baker: The Big Country.
10: Irene Tedrow: Santa Fe Passage: One of the most heartbreaking deaths in western history.

I take issue with calling GWTW a western every time! But these gals are worth every mention. My own personal favorite is Mildred Natwick.
