As a previous stage actor for years, these tip are invaluable. I wish these had existed back in the day. I learned them the hard way, and applied them as I learned them. If your an actor, needing to memorize scrips, dont take this video with a grain of sand! Take it as a ton of Gold! Every single thing she said is correct pertaining to memorization of lines. I recall using these self learned tips when I played Tony in West Side Story, and Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, among many othere stage shows. These tips work just as well with memorizing your music to be sung ..Break a leg all! Love you! And thanks for posting!

Joyce you are fabulous. Thank you for being so generous and sharing this helpful information. You have a lovely spirit. I found all your tips helpful but especially the one re testing your lines by practicing them in different surroundings. I also agree about not re-reading the lines too much. It can make one more insecure as opposed to developing the trust and confidence needed to know the lines deeply. Thank you so much! Now I just need help how not to blink so much on camera :) You have great eye presence! Thanks again!!!

This is so good. I especially liked the idea of chunking a monologue so it's like a poem. I usually highlight chunks and memorize, then add another section and do those 2 chunks together and so forth. It's similar, but I'm gong to try your suggestion to turn the text into stanzas.

I’ve been learning lines for a few decades. Here’s the thing : When you take an exam the adjudicator tells you when to start. It’s now silent until the exam finishes. Acting isn’t like that , you’ve got to recall your lines under distraction. Distractions like, you’re in costume, you’re under hot lights, someone gets up and leaves the auditorium. You can see this little green light out the corner of your eye that says ‘Exit’. Another member of the cast gives you a duff line. It goes on and on. All the above can throw you. The bottom line is this : once you get the first four or five performances out the way, you will begin to settle down. Many amateur dramatic societies don’t do more than four or five. Often six or eight and it’s over and time to pack up ! Professional actors will do twenty, fifty and more. In fact you run into another problem which is keeping it fresh 😐

It always baffled me how an actor could do a TV program one week and come show night , do the performance and then poof , he takes the weekend off , if he is lucky....then start all over on Monday with a brand new script and he's off to the races again learning new lines . Some TV actors in the 50's and 60's were in more than one TV show at a time . Must have been grueling .

Hi, 👋🏼 Many of the tips were helpful! Just from memory, I can tell you that from the other five different sources I’ve looked at - yours is the most interesting and helpful so far. I liked the chunking, because it makes sense to my brain and my memory of how I have tried to memorize in the past. I think it’s important to have the space in between with the resting times ~ that seems to agree with other experts. If I remember, I’ll let you know how it works! 😉

To get on Jeopardy you have to take an online test. If you pass the test, they ask you to audition. And if you pass the audition, they ask you to be on the show!
