    I had a guinea pig book as a child that was pretty decent I think for the 90s. Spoke about teeth growth, vet care... Some parts were wanting like cage size and even discussed breeding (also with a sexing guide)
    The oddest part was that there was a section about household dangers to guinea pigs, complete with line drawn artwork of piggies in danger. Not the most graphic but a little upsetting BUT it got the point across

      So funny but not funny - have either of you ever read any German fairy tales for kids? Der Struplepeter (spelling uncertain) was horrid! Very scary lessons for children - like not to play with matches and not to be cruel to animals.

    This reminds me of when I was in highschool in the 90s and doing a research project on interior design. My school library and local library only had a few books on the subject and they were from the 60s and 70s. Certainly was unhelpful and caused me not to trust my library for up to date info! Thankfully when it comes to guinea pigs we now have a fully functioning internet and all your helpful information, Scotty!

      Through watching your videos I found the courage to clip my boys nails and check their perineal sacs....no book compares to watching and listening to you and Saskia and following your tuition on handling, care, diet and general wellbeing.

    We have a collection of several dozen guinea pig books including the Merck Manual of Veterinary Medicine. We ordered most from second-hand online shops and read voraciously before getting our first orphaned guinea baby at 5 wks old. Yes, these helped BUT some were contradictory regarding veggies and fruits, and left out a significant amount of practical information.

    I have 6 piggies currently though I've had as many as 12 previously. I've had piggies for the past 7-8 years. I also have that Animal Planet book on my shelf. But I've actually relied on You Tube to teach me EVERYTHING piggie. So there's Cari's Little Piggies, Skinnypigs1, LAGPR, Little Adventures, & Scotty's Animals. These are the ones that have given me the most accurate and correct info all these years. My piggies have lived much longer and better lives because of them. I'm glad and grateful to them all! Thank you Scotty!
    In the past before the Internet I had a few piggies. I relied on a book for piggie care guidance. (Sorry I can't remember the title.) It didn’t even mention that hay was a necessity. It said hay was some sort of optional treat. I gave them the wrong kind of pellets. My poor piggies were in the wrong cage and had no hidey house. They would wheek at me and I didn’t know what it meant. I thought they were just making cute noises. It makes me sad when I think about how much they suffered because of my ignorance.
    So I have to say thank God for You Tube!!

    I'm a librarian (albeit at a university). It would be worth having a chat with them - not just the staff on the desk, as they won't make decisions about collection management. They should be weeding out old and inaccurate texts. I'm surprised those old books are still in circulation!
    I'd be more than happy to get recommendations for up to date texts if I worked there.

    • @beverleymason9038
      @beverleymason9038 6 днів тому +1

      I wouldn't say that anything I learned from Peter Gurney's books back then are inaccurate. It depends on the authors, I suppose. I've read some crazy stuff. I've read some great advice that still works today. Guinea pigs haven't changed. What worked for them back then, still works now. I look on the back of bags of guinea pig nuggets that say "recommend by vets" and I'm often taken aback by some of the ingredients.

    It's the same where I live in Holland. The animal care books are really old, so maybe it's a problem worldwide. The information is well out dated, I really do think that not much is kept up to date, as in the UK, it's exactly the same problem! If I need animal information, I look to the Internet as the rest of the information is really bad. Thanks for always taking the time to look into every resource available and seeing exactly how useful and up to date everything is! A day at the library with Scotty is a fun day out ❤.

    I ended up keeping pet ferrets in the 80s because one of the books in my library drew me to them like a magnet 😂. Lovely little animals. After I started keeping guinea pigs in 199I, I used to read the guinea pig books in the library, and also bought some. One author, especially, took my attention and that was Peter Gurney. I bought his books back again in 2020, 2nd hand, from Amazon, recently it was lovely to find out that he was a good friend to Saskia ❤. My other book is Guineapiglopedia, which covers and describes a lot of illnesses and lists the amounts of calcium, vitamin C and other nutrients in vegetables and fruits. Thank you for the great video Scotty 🐹🐹

    You should donate some of the guinea pig care books you have to the library. Since youre a local author they may prioritize putting your book on the shelf you never know. I liked this, I think the Animal Planet Guinea PIg book is pretty good but you know anything from 19 years ago isnt even going to include Ivermectin or even how to treat ringworm with atheletes foot cream thats very cheap. It just shows how much has changed in the realm of keeping guinea pigs even in the last 20 years

    Guinea pigs can eat all kinds of cabbages and are actually healthy for them, if the pig does not eat pellets and just bunch of greens they can eat a lot of cabagges without any issues... Here in Germany people give them tons of it of different types, plus of course tons of other leafy greens!...
    And pellets have a lot of calcium, they are more likely to cause bladder stones rather than kale.
