This is exciting! I have some to do also, but I will wait for springtime (real springtime) LOL Looking forward to the outcome. Hubby and I went to the thrift shopping today. Found some awesome things including a cobalt blue turkey roaster pan, perfect because mine is done! New leather purses and a brand new wallet, some canning jars which are one third the price of Walmart now. I'm most pleased with our finds.
I found myself yelling at the t.v. "Put on some rainboots!" while you were dunking your pans. A splash hit the floor only a couple of inches from your bare foot. I was so relieved when you put the lid on the bin. Whew!
When we were back on the farm, I always just placed any cast iron in a fire and burned them clean. That's the way my granny and her sisters clean them. These days I clean them the way my mother cleaned her crusty skillets. I put them in the oven and run the self cleaning cycle.
Aren't you going to stir the lye (gently) to get it mixed and dissolved? Mine started to stick to the bottom until I dissolved it, carefully mixing it.
The bare feet made me nervous lol - I wear full shoes just to make soap, never mind lye baths 😳I do have an old pair that I don't care if they get splattered as well as old sweats for the task. Can't wait to see results! Never thought of lye for the cast iron. The vinegar should also be behind you as you would jump backwards if you got splashed (same idea with fire extinguishers). This is a big amount of lye you are dealing with.
I used a 5 gallon bucket and 1 bottle of lye however, I don’t know how long to leave my skillet in. If anyone has any recommendations please post them.
that would be dependent on how much crud needs to be removed, but it won't hurt the cast iron metal if it stays in a lye bath for months..I would check it periodically...
You are one brave lady with bare feet & flip flops! LOL (she says in her mother hen voice!) Just kidding...I know you are being careful. I read about using oven cleaner...have you ever tried it? I have a small 6" skillet I need to do & was thinking of trying it.
A lye bath works great. I do not use wire on the items. I use rubber gloves to remove the pans. I recommend you not wear the flip flops. No offense intended. Just my opinion. I enjoy your videos.
@@HerHomesteadSkills I use the inexpensive disposable gloves you get in a box. I use them once and throw them away. The nice thick long gloves you can purchase always get a pin hole and leak.

Yes… this is how we clean our old cast iron! Takes the grunge off! Really fun to see some of your collection!!
Yes! Thank you!
Thank you for the video,I really enjoyed watching it looking forward to seeing the results.♥️
It is working, however it is very cold outside and this would have worked much faster in a warmer setting/time.
Thanks for these instructions with Lye Toni. Every bit counts. I love learning and following your channel😊❤
Hi Toni ! I can't wait to see how they look after their lye spa days. Thank you for everything you do.
Now, there's a cliffhanger for ya! Can't wait to see the end result 😊.
More correct restoration methods on UA-cam? Yes! Well done! 👏👏

Thanks so much 😊
I'm really excited to see how this goes!
Anxious to see the results, thanks for this information and allowing us to see the process
Now that's the epitome of bravery!! Can't wait to see the update! :)
Good morning Toni!
Hi! Been wondering how safe is to use lye on cast iron?
One of the safest! doesn't hurt the iron at all, just dissolves the crud.
Yup, I've heard of that method too!
That's what I want to do. But I don't want to pay the gas bill.😂
Be careful- the oven gets to 900 degrees, too hot and could warp the pans. Also if there's too much build up? It may catch fire!
Aren't you going to stir the lye (gently) to get it mixed and dissolved? Mine started to stick to the bottom until I dissolved it, carefully mixing it.
I think I used the cast pieces to swirl the water a bit before fully submerging them
Ohhh, you've done electrolysis! Waiting to see the outcome with lye. Thank you!

Me too. I was yelling at the t.v. to put on some rain boots. I was so relieved when the lid went on. Whew!
thanks for the tip on where to keep the vinegar!
There has to be a part II, right? To see the results, I mean.

Is it possible to do an update? Thanks.
Yes!
Have never seen this done...

yes, oven cleaners have sodium hydroxide, or lye in them as well and that's why they work.
Did you just stack them up on top of each other?
yes!

I don't trust the flimsy rubber gloves I have.....I have to buy a good pair for this job!

HELLO GTSY
You're not showing the money shot, payoff? I want my 12 minutes back.
