In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy will present on Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome. We will discuss the pathophysiology of obesity, focusing on the imbalance between caloric intake and energy expenditure, and Metabolic Syndrome, characterized by a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. The lecture will include a discussion on the clinical manifestations of both conditions, such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems. The digital presentation will begin with the diagnostic approach, highlighting the criteria for Metabolic Syndrome diagnosis and the importance of body mass index (BMI) for assessing obesity. Regarding the clogging up inside of the blood vessels... if you loose a lot of weight, and get into a normal bmi range... will most of the clogging get removed by itself? *or is that "damage" permanent?

With regards to meds, antihistamines, especially centrally acting, are a massive cause of fat-specific weight gain and insulin resistance. Drugs like olanzapine will cause the most weight gain owing both to potent D2 and H1 antagonistic effects.

I think this video should be re-made. There are different theories of the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome. Many argue excess calories cause hypertrophic adipose tissue to undergo lipolysis, releasing Free fatty acids(FFA) into blood where it enters skeletal muscle (forming DAG which inhibit PKC which inhibit the insulin receptor) and also the high flux of FFA entering the liver up regulates VLDL secretion. The biochemistry defending this has been established in vivo in humans using NMR spectroscopy. Other evidence is the actos medication increases adipose tissues capacity to store FFA, reducing lipolysis and reducing these symptoms, also on the opposite spectrum the disease lipodystrophy reduces adipose tissue capacity to store fat, increasing lipolysis and FFAs entering blood and exacerbates these symptoms. I need to emphasize, im not saying the obesity and FFA theory is dogma, however to say the adipokines are definitively the cause I personally believe is inaccurate and should be emphasized is theoritcal
