Hullo Harry, This is a very nice review and I remember when I did not have the funds for a specialized palette. I just used masking tape to hold my paper in place and then I would scribble my Neocolor II's onto the tape and mix my colors there! I have since purchased the CaranD'Ache multimedia palette and it is very nice piece of equipment! I often set it aside or put it away and use the tape holding my paper down as I did years ago! I did go watch your speed paint and it looks like you use these even more like a true watercolor medium! I used to purchase the 10 or 15 stick sets for my tackle-box that I kept my art supplies in. I used them mostly for covering larger areas on larger paintings or getting big areas blocked in. I could then use my more expensive paints for the top layers and layer in final colors and details without wasting my more expensive paints, I was a very "thrifty" person, especially when I was doing an assignment and not something I really wanted to do or care about! I do have plenty of the Neocolor II's, but I can see me giving these to a nephew or niece and even just 24 colors is enough. I spent years buying just 10 or 15 sticks and mixing all of the other colors I needed. I like the open stock option of the Caran d'Ache products, buying just one color I need or a replacement color I used up is so much better than buying a whole new set! Thanks Harry for showing an alternative to the more expensive options out there! I will say these work great on regular coloring books too!
The Caran d'ache palette is the best small investment. I use it a lot and clean it with a little baking soda. I take it to classes because it slips in my bag. I like crayons a lot. They travel well.
You have explained this very well Harry. The colour that they give from a crayon are stunning ! Thanks for the demo...I will think twice about these ! Take care.
Thank you for doing this review. These look outstanding. I have always had great experiences with Staedtler’s products. About a million years ago, when I sold art supplies, Koh-i-noor and Staedtler made the professional products for technical artists supplies. Caran D’Ache was considered a children’s art supply company and I caught some heat from my boss for ordering a bunch of products.
These crayons are the same as the Mungyo Aquarelle crayons, probably manufactured by Mungyo for Staedtler. I really enjoy the quality, use them regularly.
You are absolutely right about using a palette with the water soluble crayons and pencils. I've been using nothing but water soluble pencils via a palette for four months and I'm getting fantastic results without the mess of pans. Based on your recommendations, I went with Goldfaber Aqua (48 set) and Albrect Durer (15 open stock) due to budget constraints. I couldn't be happier and they are lightfast. Thanks for all you do for the art community. Love your work!!!
Wow,, first of all I am so happy that you have found your art supplies, the supplies that you love and they love you, the perfect match. It makes me so happy that in some small way, the reviews I upload have helped you find your supplies and as a result, bringing you so much joy. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I work so hard trying to make sure that the information I put out for you guys is the most accurate and honest reviews I can create. All I want is for viewers of my videos, to finds some genuinely helpful bits of information and so when I hear or read comments such as yours, it really does make me so happy.
I love watercolor crayons and have a few CD, BUT, I also very much enjoy the Sargent Art and I really can't tell the difference between them once they're sharpened and a film of bloom is removed 🎉 I'm going to put these on my list, after I get my Derwent Drawing pencils ❤ great artwork too!
We don’t get a lot of Sargent Art stuff here in the UK but I would love to get hold of some to review, especially their Charcoal, that is supposed to be excellent quality.
Fabulous review as always, Harry! Thank you! Your leaves are AMAZING!! Very inspirational 🤩 I have some neo ll s and I absolutely love them - wonderful to see the results with a cheaper brand 😊
Beautiful work on the leaves, Harry! I like the idea of a less expensive crayon because it isn't so precious. So am not so conservative with their use. Also, i like those palettes so much, i bought a second one 😊!! Thank you for the review, i just subscribed so i will get notified on the Lyra vid. Always been curious about them.
Oh this was so helpful! I have the Caran d’Arche and I just couldn’t get the hang of it, not sure why using a pallet didn’t come to mind. They’ve just been sitting in the box because of the grainy look. If I added too much water the paper would get jacked up, (I like and use smooth paper). I’ve been waiting to get a watercolor case to put them in, which is how I first saw them used at Disney world, by the caricature artist. Pieces melted into a watercolor case to be used, which was required by Disney.
Thanks. The Design Journey line is amazing. I used the graphite tinted water soluble pencils and love them! These look like a great choice on a budget without sacrificing quality. Your art work is beautiful!
I enjoy using Neocolors and Woodys on toned paper, but these Staedtler crayons wouldn't work for that given how transparent they are even when dry... That's too bad, but understandable at their price. They look fine when used like watercolor, but for me personally it's the layering and opacity aspect that makes crayons unique, and different from both watercolor paint and watercolor pencils. It's good that some folks consider this an affordable alternative to Neocolors, but I'll pass!
This is so helpful I can’t justify to spend the money on the neo II they are so expensive in Australia but theses crayons are much more affordable looks like I’ll be buying myself a Christmas gift 😂 thank you for the great review 🙏
Thank you for another great review Harry😀 I Love how you now have excellent artsupplies, on a budget. This makes it so much easier to get into art, then it used to be. 😀 Hope you and the family have a great november ❄️
Hi Harry. Thanks for the review. I use the Lyra version of these and they are excellent. I usually establish a base layer with water and then create more details with a dry colour. I too use the caran d'ache palette or a small chopping board with these and water colour pencils. I'm looking forward to your comparison video.Take care. Liz ❤️
Very nice finding you in my inbox today. Much appreciated review video of a topic and brand that I know so little about. Stay well and remain positive. Thank you.
Gorgeous Harry, Have the 15 Set of Neo 2's and have only found the 12 set of Staedtler's over here (Canada) so looking forward to finding the 24 set. Wonderful Review as always.......Cheers
While I haven't used this brand, though they suspiciously look like mungyo, but I've used soooo many and I think the comparison is best when used as a crayon... NC2 vs others, there is no comparison when used from the stick- so far. Turning them into- basically watercolors- well that's not really a fair comparison. Just my 2c. I hear the Lyra are exceptional though.
Such crayons are quite good for children. But Staedtler does not mention EN71, the rules for toys. Neocolor 2 have the EN71 mark. Maybe you can ask for future reviews the producer about the compliance.
Those are amazing in almost every way! I'm impressed. I know you have contacts with these companies. Did you try to reach out to Staetdler to see how colorfast they are?
Theoretically you have 24 x 3 colours . (Well ok 24 x 3 tones/shades) Then there's the blends .... Ooops , my finger just slipped on the buy button on Amazonia !

Yes. I only buy open stock products so Caran d'ache and Daniel Smith.
Wow, I am so impressed by how well these blend out! I’m really looking forward to the comparison video too! Thanks for what you do, Harry!

They look like Jaxon crayons as well! Probably a lot of white labeling going on among budget brands.

Great review Harry! Nice to know there are reasonably prices w/c crayons to start out, with good pigment payout. Thanks so much!

Apart from the Noris range, I've never ever been disappointed by Staedtler products.

Those look amazing.
Your explanations are plenty good, Harry, thank you for a very helpful review. Awesome drawing (or painting) of Fall leaves ! 🍂 😊
Thanks!
❤❤❤Awesome review and demo thank you❤❤❤
I always watch your reviews...they are clear and concise. I'm not an artist but love to use different mediums to use in colouring books. Thank you 🙏
Thank you for another great review Harry😀

Really enjoyed the review. I wasn’t even aware Staedler offered watersoluble crayons.
I was just about to search for an inexpensive watercolor crayon for mark making and this video popped up. Thanks for sharing 👍🙂

Thank you Harry. Love this crrayons.
Thank you for this review, I have the 36 set.
Is the Milford paper good for laying with watercolour paint thanks
Does the box say where these are made? They look quite similar to the Mungyo watercolour crayons! Wonder if they are the same product?

Commenting for UA-cam
