You're supposed to get the white flim off gallery crayons first. I had this happened first until another video told me. I just wet and wipe it. After, its pigmented and creamy. I use them with a wet brush for details or a background wash. Also depends on the paper. Get a good watercolour paper!
Maybe if you sharpen the wax coat off the sargeant ones then you will be able to pick up from them with a paintbrush?
I have the Sargent set. You can do that. They are nice crayons for people who want to experiment.
Mungyo private labels for a lot of student/intermediate grade art suppliers, especially watercolors. Their hand rolled soft and oil pastels are quite pigmented and an excellent choice for underpainting and sketchbook work if you want to save your finest quality pastels (Sennelier, Schmincke, Unison, etc.) for details, final layers or work you intend to sell.

@@nancyloomis3046 Very nice! Hand rolled pastels are one of the most versatile mediums given the intense pigment load. They can do so much and last forever. ☺️
I'm sure that the cheaper ones are less light fast. It would be interesting to cut the page in half and tape one half to a sunny window and then check it for fading each week for a few weeks.

Yes, for the ones that don't scan their art, this could be a problem. 💜🖌
You would think that based on price... but its probably the opposite. Less expensive pastels in general use less expensive vat made pigments. Like Phalos and perylenes which are highly light fast.
In non water soluble the CD Neopastels actually have a handful of colours that are less lightfast then cheaper brands. An example is Prussian blue the Neopastel is actually less lightfast then some cheaper brands Prussian. It looks better yes but it also uses more of the real less lightfast pigment.
@@chaddesrosiers1107 This is not true for yellows/reds/pinks/purples. These shades in cheap paint ranges, such as Sakura Koi and Arteza, fade significantly more than those in more reliable brands. There's quite a few known fugitive pigments in those ranges, and they somehow always end up in these "craft" paints.

This will seem heretical to most folks, but I prefer the Mungyo crayons for most paintings where I want a watercolor look. I prefer the Neocolor where I'm going for a gouache look, or when I need to cover something. They are both wonderful and I reach for them several times a week.
I compared/tested the Mungyo Aquarelle water soluble oil pastels to Caran Dache Neocolor II and the Mungyo is much more pigmented in my opinion. I like the Lyra watercolor crayons too.
The less expensive ones look to have some nice greens!
Even here in South Africa where art supplies are severely limited, there are a few brands available. You would probably have to try out a couple to find one you like. My first choice here would be Lyra. They are a German brand which is usually pretty good quality.

@@EmmaLefebvre we get mostly European brands here. We do an enormous amount of trade with China but for some unknown reason, we don’t get much in the way of art supplies. Mungyo is available though. Unfortunately, ordering from Amazon isn’t really feasible…by the time stuff EVENTUALLY arrives, the customs and exchange rates make it too expensive.
@@EmmaLefebvreyra products are comparable with seargent one or Mungyo these aquarellables wax crayons! But I am having the set of 84 Néocolor II and I am not having those colors in my big set! Both are useful it’s all dépend how you are using them! But I am using a lot of the entire set of 84 crayons from Caran d’Ache! From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦, 😊❤
I started with the Lyra ones and loved them. I mainly switched because I was gifted a big set of the neocolor 2's

you could see the difference when first drawing but they both blended well I think Emma as you said Obviously the Carendache is superior but I think both are acceptable for use. Thank you for sharing this video with us xx

The dollar store cutting boards are great. They have 2 sizes & the smaller one will fit in some airtight palettes to give you extra mixing space too! These "Budget" supplies have been around a long, long time. I have some from my highschool & college days in the 70s! I've always loved the Sargeant Arts products, the watercolor pencils are amazing & the pastel pencils too. I was so disappointed by the payout on some expensive brands when I bought them because they were harder & left shadows of lines behind. Sadly the pencil lines have very few colors, so I have had to buy very expensive brands to get the same quality that Sargeant & Mungyo have always had. Yes, they are the same country, originally produced for different countries. The US & Korea.
I use the dollar store cutting boards too. I found one a little smaller than my A5 sketchbook, and it fits in my sketchbook cover nicely.

Try the Lyra brand ones next! I have them, and they feel pretty smooth. Though I haven't tried Caran d'arche yet.

When I first started with watercolour crayons I bought the sergeant arts brand and loved them right away then saved my money and bought the caran dache ones and didn’t really notice to much of a difference only that the sergeant arts are harder to scrub! And yep bought a cutting board for mine lol the caran dache one is too expensive ! Thanks for the awesome review ❤❤❤
I think it’s only in the archival qualities of lightfastness and other longterm qualities where you’ll notice the diff. And Mungyo, the maker of the Sargeant’s set, does produce some pretty good products. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, the saying - “you get what you pay for” still holds. But for anyone just wanting these for casual sketching, learning, fun, it looks like the Sargeant’s would be a great choice. ❤️

The Caran look more workable (especially for light and subtleties) because they are probably less waxy than the cheaper ones, so more actual pigment. I imagine the others having more wax (hence the light coating you see on crayon which also makes them rougher in feel) is why the colors are more brilliant. The pigment probably lays on top of the paper more and doesn’t blend in as much. So it probably just depends on what you want to create and what effect you want. I think the Caran would be better for more detailed works w greater use of varying values, but that doesnt mean the others don’t have a place in painting. They’d be awesome for abstract - thats for sure. Thanks for sharing

I have both of these exact sets and I love them both although I wish the Sargent ones were a little more soft.
It looks like the Sargent/Gallery crayons use cheaper and often more staining pigments. The green in the Caran d’Ache lifted cleanly. The other did not …this suggests the cheaper crayons are using pthalocyanine green which is heavily staining and far too strident for my taste.
It’s difficult to get subtle colors that harmonize naturally. The Caran d’Ache make subtle color use much more possible. I prefer them to the the more in your face harsh brightness of the Sargent/Gallery crayons.
This is awesome --- I bought the Sargent art crayons last summer; but i wasn't sure how to use them. I bought a few Caran d'Ache this year and love their creamy vibrancy --- but I think Ill pull out the Sargent box again and experiment, especially with a palette and layering the colors ✨️

Great demo! Great conclusion. Though i found the cheaper ones more vibrant, i just felt the touch feel while using CD ones were a bit more fluid when you spread the pigments with water. I think while end results were so similar, the working feel with CD seemed like a more pleasant experience, but it was truly amazing how the cheaper ones could challenge, specially with the huge price difference...

There are some children's water crayons that I started with, and they were super creamy, almost too much so. I think the biggest thing is the more budget friendly isnt lightfast but if your just beginning it wouldn't matter and then maybe move to more expensive brand. I refuse to spend $7+ on a small piece of plastic lol so I went to the $1 store and got a 3 pack of thin plastic cutting boards, one side is smooth and other side is the typical rough texture. So if you want to save $ go for that. They store super easy and clean easily. Have a great day now I'm finishing the video

I found a hardly used box of 15 caran d ache neocolor 2s at a thrift shop for 2.50. I’m loving them but am about needing to replace some and ouch on the cost!
In the US the price difference is only $10 ($17 vs $27 on Amazon). I'd go with the nicer brand with those prices. Thanks for the great video!
I must first say to you; thank you so much for these comparisons. I am a newbie to aquarelle techniques and discovered Caran d’Ache at first and to be honest: these are the best! I was afraid to release my inspiration with the watercolour techniques because of the gaspillage, waist of so precious papers and pigments and all! (Sorry, I don’t express myself in english often…, I just hope that I make you laugh for the good reasons). Anyway,
I do hear the different sounds of the crayons on the paper and I am sure that I have made the good choice: always NEO’s II Caran d’Ache, thank ‘s again 😊
I was actually looking at those on Amazon the other day and felt they were a hard pass. I've recently gotten the pack of 10 caran d'ache and absolutely fell in love with them. So did my granddaughter when she came to visit this weekend. I am thinking these would be perfect for my 12-year-old budding artist and I can afford to get the big set for her. Thanks for doing this!

I was curious so I bought the crayons the caranDAche. I wanted to see what all the buzz was about and I'm glad I bought them! It's nice having something that works really well like watercolor. Suggest your comparison eould be easier to follow if you labeled each column. A nd instead of saying “these” are harder but “these” are softer USE THE BRAND NAMES.

I've been using the Sargent ones for just over a year now and absolutely hated them the first month I had them...but I stuck to it and once I was over that learning curve that every brand seems to have, they became my go to crayon and I love them...and their price is something we can justify shelling out for I think!

PS...I found if you wet wipe them to remove the cloudy film, I had no problems with it showing through. Apparently it is a protective coating applied for shipping?
If you want a better quality watercolor crayon but don't want or can't afford to pay the price for Neocolor 2, Lyra makes a set up to 48 which are artist quality but still much cheaper than the Caran D'ache. I bought them a couple years ago and love them!! I have cheap ones but the color payout on these are much better. Lindsay @ the frugal crafter mentioned them as a good alternative and she was right. I paid $80.00 CAD (Canadian) but that was 2 years ago, still it was less than half the price of the Neocolor 2
I bought some extra Caron D’ Ache crayons to get different colors and they had the wax coating I had to scrub off and they worked fine. It’s probably to protect the crayons in shipment
Caran D Ache are just so creamy. If you can afford them they are my choice.
An interesting demonstration. Of course, Caran d'Ache looks better in the picture. But there is such an individual feeling when using your material or not. Surprisingly, I never found the Mungyo information are the crayons oil or wax?
Can you mix the brands? Use the CD white with the cheaper brand for example.

Emma I really enjoy your video today I too have the mungyo water color set and the caronD’Ache set as well I love them if I was to buy more it be the mungyo set for bigger set I can’t afford the caron’D’Ache set they have some beautiful colors one just more colors then the other which I would love. Caran d'Ache are available open stock, a big plus as I tend to use some colours more than others. Do the Mungyo / Sargeant wax pastels offer pigment and lightfastness information? Thanks for offering this comparison. I love my Neocolor IIs.

These seem like theyre an especially great alternative for someone whos never tried the medium, and therefore doesnt know if theyll like it. This way, if they dont, theyre not out as much money. ...Sigh. Once again, my phone is glitching in UA-cam comments and making me look like I've never heard of punctuation. Mungyo makes very nice art products, generally reasonably priced. They white label for lots of brands. I have a couple different sets of these student grade crayons, and they are great for plein air scribbling because who cares what happens to them.

its so weird bc my 3 neocolor 2's are hard. I bought the 3 primaries open stock and they are not creamy. Thats okay though as I didnt want pastels. idk. Still not sure if I want to buy more.

Watercolor is a Chinese art dating back to 4000 BC. You would hope Asia would produce quality art material at a decent price. Art is part of everyday life.

One thing to warn about mungyo, and I'm sure the other, same ones, mungyo uses toxic pigments such as cobalt. Cobalt is an extremely toxic pigment that can be dangerous to even touch. Caran d'ache only uses non toxic pigments. I got the mungyos without knowing this, and I was nauseated for a week after using them. Be careful
