Very intersting, i boightbthe vibanium when it was $45, i felt that was fair with the brush but $65 seems high. I like that the himi palette is white because tou can gussy it up with alcohol ink. The olf miya/himi watercolor (diamond shaped extruded pans) were like phoenix/cotman. I love finding paint connections! Thanks for this!
$45 would have definitely made the pill easier to swallow finding out they are so much like Himi. I have that diamond set too. I agree reminded me a lot of cotman. That one is harder to find now. The alcohol ink idea is a great one. I think I remember seeing you do some smaller tins like that. Rainbow colors if I am not mistaken. I am always intrigued by paint connections as well. That might have a lot to do with you honestly. 🤣🤣 Thank you for watching, and commenting. That means a lot from you.
I really like that vibranium set, the wood is so nice. I don't tend to buy any new watercolour sets since I have a couple 24 sets (davinci and schminke) and plenty of tubes, but it's tempting just for the nice wooden case!
The case is nice. It is what attracted me to the set. The paints are great, but I most definitely wouldn’t put them on Schminke level. So the palette would be the appeal. Thank you for commenting and supporting.
I had to chuckle at the comment “They call it yellow ochre, because that’s what it is.” Thanks for the honest review! It’s amazing that companies can get away with this kind of deception.
I have a weird sense of humor.🤣 Thank you for taking the time to watch, and comment. To be honest with you, pretty much all budget company products are made by someone else. It’s like drop shipping in a sense. The difference is these companies have the product in their physical possession. Countless companies have operated like that much longer than my 44 years. I myself have a product sold under my brand, and it was made by another factory. It’s just more cost effective as a small business to deal with a manufacturer that has a pre existing product that will allow rebranding. Like Viburnum Arts, most repack to match their branding. Could you image having to build a factory to produce your own line of art products…🤯🤯 I do think more companies should be forth coming about it though.
@@Ichidoodles Thank you for supporting. I was actually happy to see a quill in the sets as well. The one from Viburnum is a little nicer. You may be able to find the brushes open stock if you didn’t want to purchase the paints.
Thank you so much. Very useful information. I would go with the hemi set because it wooden box isn’t going to thrill me but everyone has their own opinion. I just discovered your videos and will be subscribing again. Thank you.

I would not be surprised if Paul Rubens is from the same manufacturer too. That brand also has a 24 color pallet with colors that look exactly like the ones you’re doing the video with.
Hi, and thank you so much for commenting. Paul Rubens is actually made in Aowins Art factory. That factory produces MieLiang, Paul Rubens, and their own brand which was branded Owens Art watercolor while it was available in the American market. It’s my belief that Viburnum is made in the same factory as HiMI which would be the Miya manufacturing company. However, who knows maybe Aowins, and Miya have a partnership that hasn’t come to light in this market yet.
@@le2382 Anything is possible. That very well could be the case. I just happen to know Miya does have their own factor, and produces products. So it’s all an educated guess. Miya also happens to be the first company to release jelly gouache pigments in china. So it’s likely of the two named, Miya produces both. Can’t know for sure though.
Nice review. I haven’t used student paint because I had input from friends to use WN or Daniel Smith so I did and built palette very slowly. I liked seeing this so I can see less expensive to use in my practice time and sketch books. Have you tried DaVinci. What do you think?
Honestly, I am not sure. That may be the case. It may not be sold internationally. I will check the listing, and get back to you if I find out anything.
Really enjoyed your review. Have you ever tried the tube version of the Himi watercolors? Noticed Amazon has them for a very reasonable price. I like the Himi pan watercolors, so was thinking of giving the tubes a try.
Cool review but on the screen the dried Himi looks stronger pigment wise than the VA paints. Thanks for this review! 🎉💜🙏🏾🤘🏾🤩 New subbie here!! Have you compared them to MeiLang/ LightWish/ Paul Rubens paint sets??
@@gwensimmons_gigi1629 Thanks for subbing. I did mention in the video that I feel they are in the same ball park as Meilang Pretty Excellent. It’s kind of a toss up as to which one is better. I am just so use to using pretty excellent. I don’t think they hold a candle to any of the Paul Rubens professional paints. Maybe to Paul Rubens student grade set. Which actually isn’t even produced in the same factory as the rest of the paints. Lightwish is just a rebrand of MeiLang in my opinion. Meilang, Paul Rubens, and Lightwish (depending on the set by Lightwish) are all produced in the same factory. Other Lightwish sets are a rebrand of the Marie’s’ Masters watercolor which is widely believed to be Winsor and Newton Cotman/Phoenix paint formula. I hope this helps.
Thanks for the bamboo travel palette that I won from Kristie’s Palm Street sale a few weeks back! Do these have different binders, or different percentages of binders that would help explain a price difference?
You are very welcome!! No I believe they are the exact same set of paints. The price difference comes from the differences I explained in the video. From the packaging all the way down to the fact that one produces their own paint so they can sale it cheaper. As the other one buys their product from the one that produces, so their product is going to be higher due to higher overhead.
Hello there! No this is a different company than Superior I believe. They are both produced by Miya I believe. Who is most popular for their HIMI gouache jelly cup paints.
Hey there friends. Let’s have a good ole comparison video today.
A very helpful review! Thank you! I decided to buy the Himi WC’s because they’re on sale in an Amazon Deal for $20. That’s a good buy, I think.

@@thethriftyapprentice Yes, I painted that awful Peopeo watercolor tin to eschew any bad juju the terrible paint might have left behind LOL!

Excellent video and detective work! The pigment numbers are too particular for this to be a coincidence. Thanks Thrifty ❤

Plot twist: a third, unnamed, mysterious company makes the watercolors for both companies. I actually think that’s quite likely.
