I found the religious artifacts interesting and am unsure of Thornton’s meaning but the detail in this scene really speaks about the emptiness that many people chose for themselves as their lives end.
Nobody really mentions how the scene starts with Christian iconography behind his father and nothing behind Carl. But at 48 seconds in, the icons of Christ appear behind Carl, and at 1:14 behind his father are empty bottles of alcohol.

I didn't know Tom Hagen had a son mmmhmm.
One of the best movies ever made.
I wish this movie was available on streaming or was on TV sometimes. It’s only available by dvd and those are hard to come by.
At 0:48 sums up my high school diploma
The 2 second stare down, then, i learned to read sum, LOL
This movies touches everyone inside on some level, in some way.
How the hell Billy Bob Thornton didn't win an Oscar for this role is a complete travesty! I tell you who else should have won an Oscar in this movie... Dwight Yoakam! He was awesome as the baddie! Sling Blade is still one of my favorite movies!
“I’m yo oldest boah… names a Carl” 😂😂 That line takes me out every time! 😂
He told him like it was. "If all if yer were set in dat chair. The world will be shut of ya".
You're an idiot! Can you do anything right?
This part was so sad. He actually was a lot smarter than you think. I’m glad he said his piece to that pos father.
Bob Duvall can do any type of character. Santini, Surfing helicopter commander, Stalin, Eichmann, Tom Hagen.
Boss Spearman was his best role. imho
Hey look - it's private Pyle!
I enjoy the simple living portrayed in this incredible movie-!
That’s a heart-breaking scene
I love how magnificent Doyle thinks that he is, "I might pop the question" I'd be like lol, please dont.😂
Dam life must of gotten rough for Tom Hagen when Michael Corleone demoted him from consigliereh. "You're out Tom".
Yeah, and I guess The Road is the sequel to this. Story of the life of Tom Hagen.
Archie Bunker I guess he was never cut out to be a varsity player
He had a decent second career as a builder of NASCARs tho.
How did you know how to spell that?
Archie Bunker 🤣🤣🤣 This is what happens when Tom talks to The Don about Michael’s future🤦🏾♀️
The set design work in this movie is just so authentic and appropriate.
Poor Tom Hagan, things really went down hill
lowboy1one1 He also played Boo Radley in To Kill a mockingbird
He actually played in a lot of good movies
"They turned me loose from the nervous hospital mmhmm."
When Carl gets that look in his eye, hide the cutlery. Also, I'll be 1/2 of all the people looking at this clip won't know what that thing is at Robert Duvall's right foot, that pot. It's called a SLOP JAR. It's used for cold winter nights to take a shit.
Thanks for filling us in on that
austin teutsch
Yeah Austin, thanks for telling us that. Did not know that's what it was. I thot it was a Dutch Oven.
I guess what's inside that Slop Jar is pre-eaten roast beef stew. Maybe Dinty Moore.
You have to remember though, Carl moves reallll sloowwww.
These New Folk don't know about having to make a trip to the Out House on a bitter cold snowy night.
Two amazing actors together. Thornton’s attention to arranging the detail on this set stood out to me. I found the religious artifacts interesting and am unsure of Thornton’s meaning but the detail in this scene really speaks about the emptiness that many people chose for themselves as their lives end.
billy bob thorton, man ,what an actor!
My favorite quote ever: "I may not be a smart man, mhm, but I sure reckon that I mmm know what love is mhm." - Carl Slingblade
I like Forrest Gump too.
Nobody really mentions how the scene starts with Christian iconography behind his father and nothing behind Carl. But at 48 seconds in, the icons of Christ appear behind Carl, and at 1:14 behind his father are empty bottles of alcohol.
This how every father's day plays out for me when I go visit my dad.
Im sorry to hear that. I hope you have found love in your life...
This what happened to THX after he left the underground.
It ain’t got no gase een it!
I know this is a movie, but i reckon there are some folks out there like this.
“You shouldn’ta dun it to em. He’s just a boy.” 😐
Billy Bob Thornton is like the Swiss Army knives of actors. Very underrated.
Billy Bob Thornton is a rare actor on par with the likes of genius Daniel Day Lewis!! Many actors are cast because their natural attributes fit the role well and/or they adjust accents or mannerisms some… but this level of talent is next level! Thornton should’ve used a ghost name to see if anyone even recognized him!
I always thought that "The Apostle" was Robert Duvall's best film.
He is so diverse in his rolls. You wouldn't even know it's him. Like the card shark in Tombstone, the one Earp slap around with no gun, never realized it was him till I recognized the voice.
Sling Blade wasn't even nominated for a best picture Oscar. The winner for '96 was "The English Patient", a torturous 3 hours, but a nice safe movie to honor.
>watching award shows
Now picture that scene in "The Apostle" with Thornton. Hell of a departure from this scene eh?
I just cry through the whole movie, nobody ever helped Carl, specially his family, he's not a bad person.
people helped him when he was turned loose from the nervous hospital, mhm
Fun fact: the “I ain’t got no boy” line in the beginning was used in a song by Les Claypool called “Ballad of Buckethead”
Ugh the way Duvall smacks his tonque like that - so creepy and evil, makes me feel dirty
truely timeless film!
The fact they made this epic film in 24 days of filming is just nuts
_"French fried potaters mm-hm."_
