The wrestler who would eventually become known as Ravishing Rick Rude was born Richard Erwin Rood on December 7th, 1958. He spent his childhood in Robinsdale, Minnesota, and had an early childhood friendship with future pro wrestler Curt Hennig. Rood broke into the business after a stint as a bouncer working with Barry Darsow, 'Joe Laurinatis' and Mike Hegstrand. He had a stint as an arm wrestler before Eddie Sharkey trained him as a professional wrestler. He got his first big breaks working in Memphis for Jerry Jarrett, who gave him his "Ravishing" nickname. He then worked for Dory Funk Jr. in Florida and World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas. After working in the upper mid-card of the NWA in the mid-80's, he made his way to the World Wrestling Federation under Vince McMahon in late 1987. He was a slow starter, but eventually won the WWF Intercontinental title from The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania V (1989) and headlined against the Warrior at Summerslam (1990) (V)_. Shortly after that, he left the WWF to work in All Japan and then WCW. This led to arguably his greatest feuds, against Ricky Steamboat (Richard Blood) and Sting (Steve Borden). He won the NWA world title in 1993, but a dispute between the WCW & NWA left this achievement unrecognised. A back injury ended his wrestling career in 1993. He continued on as a manager & commentator, & in 1997 caused controversy when he appeared on _"Raw Is War" (1997) and "WCW Monday Nitro (1995) on the same night. This was his last major stint with a company, and on April 20th, 1999, he died of cardiac arrest in a hospital in Alpharetta, Georgia. He was 40 years old.
Rick Rude is interred at Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell Georgia.

Sadly I will not help people like that anymore. Because yrs ago I stopped to see if someone needed help and got attacked . he did run to my car to kick it as I drove away and all I did was ask if he needed help , food or water. I just decided at that point I wasn't going to put myself in danger again. it bothers me because I love to help people its in my heart. so now I just do volunteer work where ever I can. but to walk up and ask its just too dangerous. I wouldn't even stop to help a broke down car I just call none emergency police to let them know that it's an issue. Thank you again for another awesome video. Be careful out there.

You can’t let people take the ‘goodness’ out of you! I’m a nurse and have gotten punched, bit, slapped.. I’ve even had a black eye from a patient! Even though I’m now very cautious- I don’t let that change how I treat patients! Always trust your ‘gut instinct’ but you could be a person that someone will never forget by your acts of kindness!
I’m sorry that happened to you though…

@@chrissieroxba2949 I did for yrs helped when ever I could. Just that time scared me so bad. It's why I just give back in a different way. With volunteering. You just can't tell what drugs or mental issues are going on with someone. I had realized I actually had put myself in danger many times and felt extremely foolish for it. Thank you for your work also. 💕

It was wrong of him to act that way, but no telling what he had gone through before you encountered him. Keep trying to help, you never know, you could save a life one day. You just have to be prepared and careful.

Around 1993 or so I was working at a hospital in Tampa that specialized in women's medical services. One day I was walking through the lobby where patients were to be discharged. There was Rick Rude filming his wife with one of those big VHS camcorders as she and their baby were being wheeled outside by a nurse. Us employees there were told not to bother famous people we saw at the hospital. And there were quite a few, including Hulk and Lisa Marie Presley. Still I couldnt resist just a quick hello.

@RobinSiwula-bz2qj he had candida pneumonia, confirmed by lung biopsy. The Dr used the wrong anti fungal (diflucan) that wouldn't touch the infection. I begged the hospital to give my father micafungin, which is the correct anti fungal based on NIH case study and from the CDC itself, but the infectious diese Dr was a covid nazi and cuz they stuck a qtip in his nose a month earlier when he went into the ER, they said he had covid, there was nothing they could do. I couldn't get over this guy's head and my mother was technically next of kin and she's a covid nazi too and wouldn't do anything to help. 3 days before he died, I got another Dr to put him in micafungin and also had him sign the living will, with 2 random people signing as witnesses, to give me the power to make medical decisions for him over my mother. The hospital never completed the paperwork, so my mother was still in charge. I stayed with him every night. The final night, they gave him morphine (my mother must have ok'd the end of life treatment he didn't need, his lungs were clearing up from the micafungin), he went into respiratory distress @ 73 breaths per minute immediately after they gave him the morphine. I begged them to stop giving it to him. The crazy infectious disease Dr had ordered it every 30 minutes and I couldn't tell them to stop. I told them call my mother, I was texting her. They didn't and gave him a second round of morphine. Respiratory failure happened, I watched them kill my father even after I begged for his life.

I met Rick when I was a kid after a World Class Championship Wrestling show in Lawton, Oklahoma. This was the height of the kayfabe days, mind you. I asked him if he would ever go back to wrestling in the WWF. He said, "Yeah, but I'd want to be a good guy." He was very nice to me and a bunch of us kids who were hanging out waiting to see him. I know he had his issues, but it was a good memory.

Hey Scott.. My wife passed away 12 weeks ago, and Ai cannot get over it. I understand that people pass, but the idea of her being gone is extremely disturbing.. She has contacted me through music, thoughts in my head and by placing " shiny dimes " in places where I had just previously been. It's reassuring to know that she is there to watch over me and her friends, but not having her physically is slowly tearing me appart.. totally sux bro.
You should do a video about the phenomenon that occurs when a person passes and their family " hears" from them. I've gotten to the point where I can call upon my wife in the afterworld to let me know that she's still around. Be well Scott.. Be safe my Canadian Friend..

Then it was confirmed. I bottled it up. I had been honored to meet him a couple months before his passing. What fans said was true. Dude was the most genuine & humble guy I’ve met. Then I watched Once & Always. I knew a tribute was coming. When the “once a ranger always a ranger” memorium appeared that broke me. JDF & bray Wyatt…2 different sides to the same coin are the only celebrities that ever made me cry.

@@SCOTTONTAPEI don’t live far from where Steve is buried and I went to visit not long ago had me thinking no one on UA-cam has done a proper piece on this man and his career. You came to mind Im definitely gonna make some calls to the roundabout theater company see if I can get a contact to get you in for some kind of tour to go with the story and history of studio 54 Steve’s death anniversary is coming up in July i believe it would be a great thing for his legacy and adds a new take on his life for this younger generation who doesn’t even know about his man.

Rick Rude was a wrestling legend. One of the toughest men to ever step in a ring. He fell on a table wrong outside the ring and messed up his back. But he was a former intercontinental and world champion. Had the best body in wrestling for years. Legend.

The magical wrestler! Appeared on WWF and WCW on the same night! (as RAW was taped and WCW was live.) A huge wrestling fan, as you know, Scott. Everything I have ever heard, or read about Rick was that he was a true upstanding man outside the ring. His loss was one of the saddest....he could have gone so much further.

I enjoy watching the content from the old school wrestlers from when i was a kid. My cousin and I loved watching WWE and had our favorites. It's sad how most of them are gone. Each year for my cousins birthday, I'd pay an old school wrestler on Cameo to make a video for him. Now many of those guys are already gone. At least Hacksaw Jim Duggan is still with us, he lived up the road from me back in the 80s as he explained to me in a video i had him do. Thanks again Scott 😊
