Today is going to be the 1st day of 18 consecutive days and I hope to be mastering playing vibrato afterwards. I am 66 yrs old; arthritis in fingers but not too bad. I have such a longing to be playing beautiful in church one day, that I just keep on keeping on! Thank you Michael for helping us so much in the way you try and teach us. It has to bear fruits!
It takes at least 6 months and up to like 2 years to really MASTER vibrato for most people. There is no way you will master it in 18 consecutive days, so don't lose heart. People who really master vibrato slave over their vibrato.
Eugenie van Zyl Great. Did you improve? It took me 3 years with a bad violin. And just one week to master vibrato in a good violin. This is what most teachers fail to tell their students.
I'm in my second year of learning the violin and have watched countless tutorials. This is the first vibrato tutorial that has truly made sense and delivered results! Thank you so much!
Hi Violin Tutor Pro, This is the best lesson on vibrato I’ve seen. I’ve been struggling for years figuring it out on my own and watching other videos. This one best describes what to do! Your information on the angle of the hand/fingers, and the motion, focusing on the blade of the hand moving towards you…very excellent and simple. Thank you so much. This is very helpful 🙏🫶🏽 - Ruchira
Very good instructions. Best seen on here. I am 75. Had a violin from age 12. Never ever looked for an instructor all thoughout all these years, just for vibrato lessons. So lax believing it came naturally. Never have performed with librota.
You are one of the beat teachers ever i love you so much thank you so much for these videos they have helped me so much while im learning violin on my own
Brilliant teaching.. iI really appreciate your down to earth approach . I am 73 and with no.previous musical knowledge, have just started violin in May 2020. I obviously have bad playing habits but am told I have made good overall progress so far. I will follow your channel regularly. Thank you.
I have lots bad habits 😢 but now that you explain it, i will go back praticing wit good habit 💖 thank you for the good work 🌹 so sorry for bad english, i'm french 😁
First of your lessons that I have seen. I love the reference of patting head and rubbing stomach. That's what playing had felt like and vibrado seemed impossible like the rub/pat. But you did it!! And showed is. Now I know it's possible, eventually. ;-) . I'm 61 and learning. Thank you for giving me confidence. I'll be rewatching this lesson and practicing over and over until I get it.
Vibrato is fairly new to me because I had not found a violinist who could talk about methods or your wonderful, particular ways to explain this process. Finally, you are so much easier to relate to with these types of details. Thank you so very much.
I love your video...I;m a violin teacher in Santa Fe NM and this tutorial will be so helpful to some of my young students...thank you for posting this...
this is very useful as it tells us where our fingers should be, where our hand should be, how much pressure we should be using. I think this is excellent in tell us how the fundamentals need to be in place in prep for when we learn vibrato.
Your video just popped up on my feed. So I watched it and I really enjoyed it. I want to learn vibrato. I'm 50 and just learning to play. So Im taking the 18 day challenge. Hopefully my "Silent Night" piece will sound pretty by Christmas. Here it goes.
Very good and helpful! Thanks. Learning vibrato with my teacher. But wanted to see some additional videos. From all i watched, this one has been the best. Well explained, and even if not the smae speed, I could understnad the technique and I did it.
Very helpful. I've only been at it a couple of days now, but your video made it come together. I stopped when you told me to, however. What I don't understand is why my knuckles don't move like yours do. It's as if I don't have a joint there, even though you weren't emphasizing it, your knuckle was going up and down at 8:02.
30 and your explanation is so helpful makes so much sense I've had my violin for 3 days I've been practicing so much and these detailed explanations are a must.
After watching many videos on this, you have helped me to actually get the movement now! So I am on day 1 of 18 too! Feeling pretty confident that I will progress this way~many thanks!
Thanks so much! I have realized that I have been doing it wrong; I apply a lot of pressure on the strings. I'm going to audition for an orchestra called Kendall Orchestra this Saturday. It's a county orch. for middle schoolers and I really hope I get through. Again, thank you so much, I very much appreciate it!
Verencia Mulya Putri different pressure for different strings; on the G you can afford to press a lot but use gradually less pressure as u get to the E string, there u barely press. When u apply pressure apply with ur pointer finger
hello - I have watched many teachers on UA-cam teaching vibrato. You are a great teacher. I followed along with your demonstrations and was able to have that beginning wrist/arm movement and finger position and get the first stage of vibrato (actually moving the arm and holding the fingers correctly allowed me to get the slow movement/tone as described with all four fingers. Concentrating on relaxing the arm/wrist/hand/fingers IS key. Slowly, over time, practicing it every day, I'm sure I'll get it down whereas I had had my doubts. This video is now 5 years old. I hope you still teach and make more. thank you. p.s. I notice you don't use a shoulder rest. I prefer that style as well. I have a small pad under the violin. Holding the instrument in place with neck/chin pressure gets tough. any tips for that?
Thanks Michael. I too am 66 years old and struggling with vibrato, especially with the first finger on the e string (not sure why that is). Holding the violin up is tiring - must be an age thing. Am working towards grade 5 exam now.
I don't think it's an age thing, I am a young adult and find this very hard myself. Sometimes I can't even hold the violin if my hand is not on the neck.
Andreea Lorena Mitoi what?? Its much easier if you doesnt have shoulder rest than with or try to practice you ching and collar bone grip and btw use ur collar bone as a shoulder it helps me alot while practicing
heyy...thanks for d wonderfull video i have a small doubt about moving my hand. i have totally understood till d part where u showed moving or sliding hand over d strings but i didn get how to put my finger at same position and moving my hand. can you please explain it little further and tell how to practice keeping finger tip at fix position and moving hand. please help me out with this issue waitin for your reply thanks
Thank you for this lesson. I've been finding violin vibrato difficult; I realise now it may be because I play guitar and it is completely different. My wrist keeps moving. ... I'm determined to learn this.
Good video - thank you. Can I ask ... although vibrato is up and down the direction of fingerboard, the neck of the violin seems to move laterally. Is that OK, or should attempts be made to reduce that motion? Is it, for example, symptomatic of not holding the violin tight enough with the chin/shoulder? BTW I'm just starting to learn vibrato, and finding it (like everything else in violin playing ..) hard! But I know with perseverance it is achievable!
alright, I am going to be the win.. HAHA.. I am going to work on this, along with other things I am learning on the viola. thanks for your time 4 years ago to make and issue this video, great stuff
I am new and late to the violin and fascinated by vibrato but imagine the only wat to have my rh bow arm move independently from the left - a ridiculous situation with both limbs moving in unison - answer must be more practice? Thanks for your advice ….
I have only been playing for about 3 weeks (I practice every day), but I am trying to get my left hand in the correct position to so vibrato so I don't learn bad habits. the only problem is when I bring my elbow inward so I can keep my index finger from touching the neck and causing excessive shaking of the violin, my elbow hurts. I'm not in good shape by any means and I tend to sit half the time when I play because I have bad knees so standing for long periods of time can be painful but when I do sit I make sure to have good posture like when I play my saxophone. Is the elbow pain because I'm not used to the position? or because I'm doing it wrong. I do have a little heaver violin then normal and also my headstock is heaver because it has geared tuners and looks more like a guitar headstock. I have a video from about a week into playing without trying to do vibrato, my playing starts at about 2:35 ( ua-cam.com/video/5Ho-XjHqCB4/v-deo.html ) (my playing here feels more comfortable than when I try the "vibrato" position ), maybe someone could give me some tips or something? I have also started stretching before I practice to try and loosen everything up.
Have looked at a few vibrato lessons on UA-cam. I find yours the best. Seems more sensible and attainable. I am having difficulty with co-ordination - making my bow independent from my vibrato fingering. Any tips? I know it's a matter of hard work!

The desire to play the violin piece from the movie Schindler's list lead me here. Your nicely formulated video will be my first step toward the goal.
The best examples I have seen on vibrato.
The tips on finger position angle was so helpful and to slow down helped me
I am 71 and having a ball learning! You are sooooo helpful!!!!
Thank you for going through this so thoroughly! I have seen several tutorials on vibrato but this was the best!

This is a very helpful video on developing an arm vibrato, and my students and I thank you for posting this.
Clear demonstration. Very helpful! Thank you.
This is exactly what I needed. I believe my whole problem is my positioning. You explained this so so well . Thank you very much.
Staying relaxed was the most advantageous lesson I learned here, but the whole lesson was really helpful. Thank you!
Your videos are so helpful. Struggling to learn vibrato but hopefully after listening to you I will get the hang of it.

Thank you. I have decided to try different video teachers and am learning from each.
By far the best vibrato video out there,, and one of the best on left hand position in general,, Thank you so much really Michael !!
I agree! Thanks a lot!!
Enjoying starting to play again. Just got a better violin (electric)...this site really helps hone the skills!

How to stop the bow from shaking/bouncing?
Jensen Kho are we supposed to give pressure to the bow or let it go smoothly over the strings by its own weight?
Verencia Mulya Putri different pressure for different strings; on the G you can afford to press a lot but use gradually less pressure as u get to the E string, there u barely press. When u apply pressure apply with ur pointer finger
Michael Gachich cool, thanks!
bebeautifulyou try to practice ur open strings!! And ur bowing or types of bowing the arco pizzicato col legno spiccato and etc
Open string exercises
Brilliant video !!! But do we maintain contact with the fingerboard with the forefinger whilst playing vibrato or not ?
I'm not sure whether I'll have anywhere near a tiny improvement in my vibrato in 18 days but I'll definitely give it a red hot go !!
Really great explaination. Never heard some of that.
Yep, just like everyone else has said. This is the first time I have actually had a hint of a result after 15 minutes practice. Thank you.
this is just fantastic instruction. Thank you very much. I feel like you have divulged some great tips that may have cost you much more $ and time.

Yes and ditto
I think so because he is doing this on a violia he said at the beginning I think.
Years of dedication to video games have prepared me for this movement.

I want to learn the wrist vibrato please, and thanks.
Great vibrato tutorial !!!
great video. thanks!
Great tip on pressing too hard!
Is there a way to make your wrist less tense?
try to relax.... that's all I know..... hope it helps :)
He's using the arm vibrato. He's more comfortable with it. He's not so comfortable with the wrist like Samvel Yervinyan.
Warm water. Warm sleeves. And warming up, so massage and stretching. Also prevents RSI.
Have never heard about finger.angles! Wow
Thanks, i coud make it with the first and second Finger, and thats that.
Too difficult Michael, Thanks.
Regards. Elizabeth
that was a great video, very helpful, im always open to learning new things :) i play the fiddle every day, and i have four dogs and two cats and one bird!!! and id love a free rosin :)
how long does it take to get a good vibrato sound and when should I start learning it? :) great video by the way!
How often should you change strings?
My teacher taught me to do this, but the day before, I had done intense bouldering for 3 hours straight, so my hands' muscles weren't their best, so when he was trying to teach me, I couldn't get the correct grip so I have been trying to learn it on my own. I loved the tips at the beginning but I couldn't understand what you were talking about when you actually started talking about the main part of vibrato.
