Love your teaching; I'm a pianist, not a violinist, and am 72 years of age. I'm still learning and to me THE most essential part of great music is the touch; for instance a 1maj7 is much more melodic and beautiful if the 7th is not played to loudly.

@@lucys1016 I practice all the vibrato exercises for about 15 min in total, I pretty much follow along with the video and pause it to make sure I'm doing it correctly. It helps a lot to focus on 3rd finger, get the motion there, and soon 2nd finger will follow along, then 1st and 4th finger. Keep up the good work, be patient, never never never give up!!

Dear Nicky. It's nov.28, 2023 10:20am I started to feel as though my wrist was not moving in the same plane as yours for vibrato. I am working from Tessa Larks how to learn vibrato an easier way. This method has been extremely helpful in order to move the wrist in the way that you do. I am adopting her system only because I understand it better and it truly allows my wrist to mimmick yours. Your still my favorite violin teacher and I will be watching your vidios mostly. Your adoring student in u.s.chris e.yours very truly.😅

Hi Nicky, I managed to do a vibrato yesterday on all 4 fingers for the first time and to be honest, I was expecting the sound of a pneumatic drill but got the complete opposite😁. It was a fast and narrow vibrato where my left hand and fingers were relaxed. The only lessons I had was for Bb clarinet!

I CURRENTLY DONT USE A SHOULDER OR CHIN REST, BUT TO ANY BEGINING VIBRATO ENTHUSIAST, I WOULD HEARTILY RECOMMEND BOTH CHIN AND SHOULDER RESTS SO YOU DONT CHOKE THE VIOLIN NECK, AND IF COMFORTABLE THE RESTS WILL ENABLE YOUR HANDS TO FLY. PLUS YOU WONT WORRIE AS MUCH ABOUT DROPPING THE VIOLIN. I MAY IF I FIND ONE BUY A LIBERO SHOULDER REST. BUT REMEMBER, ANYTHING THAT ATTCHES TO THE VIOLIN TENDS TO DAMPEN THE TONE. BEFOR 1850, THERE WERE NO CHIN RESTS! GET SOME EVA PIRAZZIS, IF YOU DONT ALREADY AND THEN TRY VIBRATO! YOUR FINGERS WILL BE MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE. GET THAT BRIDGE AS LOW AS YOU CAN, MAYBE SAVE THE OLD AS IS AND PUT ON A NEW LOWER HEIGHT BRIDGE. I CERTAINLY AM GLAD I GOT INTO BRIDGE CARVING!, I NOW MAKE MY VERY OWN CUSTOM BRIDGES. WATCH THE DAVIDE SOLA IN CREMONA B R IGE CARVING START TO FINISH, AND YOU WILL LEARN HOW VITAL THE BRIDGE IS TO THE SOUND AND ENJOYMENT OF THE VIOLIN. SINCERELY CHRIS E. USA. HAPPY VIBRATO!😂

    Thanks Nicky.
You have a beautiful face, violin and playing style and way of putting that lot forward for what must be the hardest thing to achieve on a violin.
The vibrato is the soul of the violin and brings it to life to make our eyes wet and contain gulps we don't want others to hear or see!!
That was the best vid yet on vibrato.
I find it immensely hard but at 70 I am beginning to get it at last!!!
I valued all the demonstrations you showed of various violinsists and their styles.
You put a lot into that video.
    Many thanks.

Richard, I wanted to let you know I decided to get serious about playing like a true violinist. I started when I was 10 with a wonderful teacher, then set it down again for 10 years. Then I picked it up for a country rock band, then set it down for another 15 years. I picked it up again 15 years ago playing in another pop-rock group but only played part-time as the guitar was more necessary. Now I am 66 retired and finally trying to learn vibrato having never done it before. So take heart friend there is at least one more senior trying to do a difficult thing. Thank God, Nicky is so expansive with her explanations and techniques.

I doubt I could ever be that loose, so thank you, for instilling confidence, by pointing out each will develop their own unique style. It is impossible to speak or sing without vibrato. It is a natural part of the human voice. It activates the human ear and creates interest in communication. Vibrato reduces the feeling of space between the voice and the listener.

Dear Nicola! Good morning! I have come to the conclusion that you are right! Everything we expect to hear from the violin should come through us not necessarily the instrument. In other words our health is mirrored in the sound of the violin. Have a wonderful day!😅

Had a great practice of beginning vibrato this morning. It's 7 1 24 ce. From usa.hi Nicola! I practiced vibrato this morning. I capped it off this evening with bow practice and acouple run through with I think I'll say, by O.N.J. I like light country music! She taught me to appreciate it. In the same way.Nicola you have taught.me how to appreciate Jules Massenette Meditation! Overdone or not it's growing on me. My sincerest appreciation, see you tomorrow a.m. for another run through beginning vibrato! Yours, c.e.😅

5 7 24, Hi! Nicola. Wonderful lwsson. Been working on Turkey trot with another instructress. Then also.anther folk tune w. Another instructress. Only the other day did i figure out to drop all strings but the one im tuning. Its been a revelation. When i think back on 4th grade and how much trouble i had with tuning my violin, i feel rocketed into a new dimension. I still have to rely on my korg tuner but my violin sounds heavenly. I am able to match the tambor of your a string vibrato and its wonderful. So! Ive had a very full day of violin playing. Its about 5:15pm pst. Here on 5 7 24. Great lesson thank you Nicky!

Thanks a lot for this vid. I came to violin recently from guitar and Sax. I think the guitar vibrato was messing up my concept of the movement so this was insanely helpful. I did a couple of hours of the movements before everyone woke up at home and then when I got the bow, suddenly I had a gorgeous, even vibrato! Well, to my beginner ear haha

Guitar vibrato is easy by comparison, almost instinctive

Thank you. I have been struggling with this topic. After 50 years of playing guitar, re-training my fingers to move like this is quite the challenge. However, yours has been the tutorial that has struck the 'chord' for me. I'm off to my viola to begin this process.

Hi Nikki, ive been working on my trailer, so have not practiced a day or so, my discovery of 45 degree rosin routine the other day may have led me to rest on my laurels. It doesnt matter what others think, its my ears that matter. And I SAY I HAVE MADE TREMENDOUS PROGRESS. I HAVE YOU TO THANK AND MR. WALLACE RITCHIE! ITS BEEN TERRIBLY HOT HERE IN THE ROGUE VALLEY, SO I AM NOT RELISHING PULLING OUT MY VIOLIN TO PRACTICE TONIGHT. I MIGHT, I MIGHT NOT. I JUST LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDIOS, AND HOPE THEY BECOME CLASSICS! PLEASE

Hi Nicky, spent morning reviewing the drinking glass mechanics of vibrato.holding the glass in reverse is vibrato. Spent late afternoon listening to sonny and cherr the beat goes on. According to Sonny he wrote it himself. I think It will become a classic! So I did the best I could to mimmick the song on my violin. It was OK. Didn't move me like there version but I felt inspired. I also am tinkering with my bows to incurred tonal bliss. Then after dinner I watched the slow motion Menuhin vibrato vidios I like Kogan and that French guy. I've noticed Pinkus Zukerman seems to have a hand pattern similar to yours. ERGO THE THIRD FINGER ASSIST TO THE FOURTH AND THE FINGER GROUPINGS ETC. I THINK I DID WELL TO UNDERSTAND THE WATERGLASS TRICK. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE PALM THAT PIVOTED BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE REAL ROTATION COMES FROM THUMB. THE REST OF THE TIME ITS THE FINGER JOINTS. WELL THATS HOW I OBSERVED IT. LONG DAY, RETIRING FOR THE EVENING. JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW I WAS PRACTICING. IM SO PROUD OF MYSELF. BYE FOR NOW. 12 5 2023 838PM.
