Mr 0', I just wanted to say as a non automibile mechanic, although diagnostician of 3 decades of H.V.A.C. systems; thank you for your videos. It means alot to all of us! Whether or not we work on vehicle or whatever...thank you sir! Much respect!
I spent about 40 years working with computers from handheld to mainframe. His troubleshooting skills are off the chart. It doesn't matter what you work on, you can learn from his thought process and logic.
I think this and all your videos are great and informative. Although I just can't afford some of your scan tools. I do learn a lot from them. I do have a cheap scan tool that does some things like fuel trim. Oh ya, thanks, DR O.
Thanks again for common sense repairs, we need more trustworthy mechanics like you and your shop that believe in doing the right job. Taking care of your customers.
Agree. I had a 91 mazda b2200. Less that 40k on it. California. It failed smog miserably and was tagged as a gross poluter for tge rest of its life. Took it to the dealer. They said the cat was bad. Paid to have replaced. Still gross poluter. Took to a couple mechanics. And one guy got all the smog readings and pondered for a while, staired at the MAF sensor for a while, then offered me $500 for the truck, that hesitation looking at the maf made me think twice. Took it home. Sprayed carb cleaner and what do you know. Fixed. Scammers everywhere.
Sometimes getting manufacture specific info can be awesome. For my ford I use forscan and I got a check engine light for a map sensor out if range code. When I scanned it was saying the code was not active but it keeps the light on. If I took it anywhere they would have swapped the sensor and the harness. I just rest the code and had no issue, bought some cleaner and cleaned all 3 sensors and have had no issues since. Just a one time freak out if range code.

Master class from one of the best ever. Side note: I been getting bad spray paint cans recently, tube inside falls off. They figured out spray cans in the 60's... Now they can't even manufacture those properly. Junk Junk Junk.
I just found you on UA-cam while convalescing in a hospital bed after a hip replacement and was very impressed at your knowledge base. I’m not a mechanic but I consider myself a bit more than a DIY’er especially for a Priest. Wish there were more mechanics like you we could rely on.
You know you're hooked onto these videos when you yelling "CHEVVY THUNDER!" synchronizes perfectly with Eric's 😅 Re oil burners: I know people like to hate on BMW, but my BMW (328 XI) has non measurable oil consumption at 90K. Ok, no dipstick, skeptics could claim the electronic oil level display is a lie, but I guess the dealer pull out nearly as much as they put every 7k.😊
I'm keeping this video. You explained the relationships of fuel/alcohol content, fuel trims/maf readings and CRC can, not the actual cleaner problem. When you explain it, it makes sense. Thank you for this video.
I had a spray paint can do that same thing (actually worse, just spewing everywhere ) and nearly ruin a paint job I was doing on the bumper of my daughter's Corolla. Really infuriating. Thanks as always, Eric!!
I gotta say again, you are an excellent and entertaining teacher. Really enjoy the logical conclusions you arrive at and the excellent clarifications on how you got there. You take a case of complete befuddlement and when you are done explaining, I almost understand what I thought you were talking about. In other words, GREAT video!!! Keep it up, we're loving it!
I have been working on cars for fifty to fifty-five of my sixty five years of life. I’m not a pro or have an certified credential’s but I wish that i had because I believe that it would have made me a better provider for my family ❤ that I love. I like your utube video’s because l learn so much it’s better than an education. Also i love how your family get’s involved with the process and aren’t afraid to get there hand’s dirty! You don’t know how much time and money we -our family has benefited from watching and learning from your Utube stuff! So thank you. P.S. if your ever in Nashville we owe you a free Lunch or Dinner 😇🤑😽
As someone who's definitely more nuts n bolts than technical/electronics repair, I LOVE videos like this. They prove beyond reasonable doubt that even modern vehicles can sometimes still be repaired with simple, inexpensive fixes.
True, provided you have an expensive analyzer and know how to use them. I'm a retired mechanic, and it just wouldn't pay to purchse one for the possible one or two times I may need it. So, I'm at the mercy of other mechanics who can't read and interprete data with the accurracy and efficiency that Eric posesses. Eric O. you are a NY treasure. People like you shoiuld never pass away or retire.😉
Chevy also has a computer update, at least they did for my 2010, that fixed some of the programming logic. I was having a to reset the alcohol content once a week as the truck would get really hard to start from cold. I had my shop run the update on the computer and have not had a problem since.
Their programming "logic" is so ass backwards. In my impala if it is super cold outside and doesn't reach operating temperatures within a certain amount of time it throws an error for the temp being out of spec. It doesn't have a code for the engine being cold so it throws the code for the engine overheating instead, because wtf else is it supposed to do lol. It then turns off the temp sensor, disables the air conditioning and kicks the radiator fans onto high. My car is cold and it's actively making it colder.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and always learn a great deal from you. Whether it be a scantool or a nut and bolt repair, they both are phenomenal. I hope you do a video on the Odessey... I think it would be awesome. Thank you for teaching this old dog new tricks.🙏💜
I love the videos where you use your brain instead of your back to make your money. As much as we love to watch you replace parts and learn some of your tricks we love it when you get an easy W.
“I hope I am not boring you” lol! Never! Your troubleshooting and logical skills never bore anyone! Your wealth of knowledge is also used by many! Tack on your wonderful family, and joy of doing what you do is amazing! Makes me want to move out to your neck of the woods from the west coast and come work for you for free just to suck up your knowledge!
Great info on alcohol content and reset for fuel trims! In the real old days we adjusted trims by first removing q-jet carburetor and grinding the anti-tamper plugs out that covered the mixture screws in carb base plate, then re-install on engine and adjust to best manifold vacuum. If you were real high tech you would use a 3 gas exhaust analyser and set co at about 1.5 to 3.0 percent. This is back when men were men and hotrods were built in Detroit.
Your depth of knowledge about all these modules and engine management systems is outstanding. You play that scan tool like a violin. I'm starting to cry just thinking about it. Well done good sir.
Eric you’ve entertained and educated millions on you’re channel, thank you for your work on the autos and your work on setting up the posts for the tube, hi from Ireland, ps Eric certainly not boring very interesting you’re a magician with the scan tool
Used to be in the automotive field years ago, moved on to maintenance sup at a big warehouse. Still work on cars on the weekends. I enjoy the scanner videos and learn what to look for from you. Keep up the great work fella.
He did say these engines burn a lot of oil. Maybe it is the blowby being sucked into the combustion chamber from the PCV system causing the rich condition?
Dr. Eric is healing another one. Now it's all better. There are a lot of things to keep them running today, and I don't understand why they are so complicated. Can't tweak the carb to fix rich or lean. Takes Dr Eric to weed out the problem.
That Genesis power draw from someone adding an extra fuse, Grand Caravan high speed bus with frayed trunk wires, that Chevy truck that lost its ground due to salt, and the twisted Hyundai camshaft diags live in my head rent free. You have an amazing diag process. And of course that Sedona starter you had to warranty due to junk parts.
I would never spend any time under my own hood if I was in your town. If I watched every video you ever made, I would still be impressed by the next one.
You could do a target competition with Mrs O, shooting CRC cans in front of a nice log fire. They look like they'd make a nice whoomph accompanied with pretty flames. Stay safe out there.
actually, I appreciate the hands-on-actual diagnostic manner you have, you explain well, and give the alternative cause. This type of video is priceless training. Thank you and Mrs O
My 02 5.3 doesn't burn an once of oil between changes at 3 to 4K. It tics a little at startup but it has done that since I bought it. 165k on the meter now. Frame solid as from factory
In 1978 I put Mobil 1 oil in my Dads Olds Cutlass at his new house. My youngest sister scratched her name and the year in the cement garage floor when they poured it, that's how I know what year it was. The Mobil 1 oil can said it was "guaranteed" for 25,000 miles. When I changed that oil my Dad said he was not comfortable going 25,000 miles on an oil change, so we adopted a 10,000 mile interval. Mobil 1 wasn't brand new brand new, but it was relatively new on the market so I didn't know anyone using it. We felt like pioneers using it. Today I have a 1998 GMC Yukon with 325,000 miles on it, and I have always put Mobil 1 oil in it at 10,000 mile intervals. Dad's Cutlass was a cast iron 350 Olds I have a cast iron Chevy 350 Vortec. Dad's car was Quadrajet carbureted I have Central Sequential Port Fuel Injection commonly called a "Spider." Neither one of the 2 engines used any oil to speak of at all. I do live in Southern Michigan and have to admit the salt ate Dad's Olds and my GMC is an eyesore, but they didn't use oil. We never ever added any between changes. I also have a 2017GMC 4.3L V-6 VVT GDI w/ AFM and it uses some oil between changes, but I go by the DIC when to change it, so I don't know how far it goes. I wonder why my newer truck uses oil. It's not leaving spots on the garage floor, so it must be going out the tailpipe. Why? And I wonder how much fuel we had in our iron 350's oil at 10,000 change intervals.
My 61 GMC shortbed truck has over a million miles on her.....not even tired....327-375 Chevy motor, four speed tranny. Lowered it around ten years ago.
I have a 08 Sierra with the 5.3 that has 438 thousand miles on it. The key is, having a range technology AFM disabler on it 👍 oh yeah, also I never let a GM hater work on it 😁lol✌️just kidding, I think you're a great mechanic, one of the best . As a matter of fact, I wish you or Ivan from pine hollow diagnostics were closer to South Carolina. 👍✌️
And by the way, you could do any video and I would watch it. It could just be doing this all day and I'll watch them, they all give me so much information and I love it!!
One of my regulars pulls up yesterday in a 1995 Olds Silhouette that was idling at about 2000 rpm. When you mentioned old school, I could relate. Got a new ECM for it this morning, swapped the PROM and it wouldn't even start. Gotta love reman. I had to reinstall the old one to move it.
DOD sudden loss of OP. check the VLOM manifold bolts. Easy check just under throttle body. If the front two are lose, pull the intake manifold and check the remainder. That was my issue. Re torqued to F'n tight, drilled and safety wired. Also these engines like clean oil and filter at 3K. Not Walmart filters and oil either.
As a 17 year tech before OBD2 and unfortunately after 15 years as a cable splicer I found myself back in this automotive mess. I still find Chevy easier to diagnose than Ford. Don't get me started on Chrysler,oh my God how many modules can they possibly have 😂. This is why I own an 07 CR-V. Still love my Chevy thunder ⚡. Thanks for the video Eric. Mrs O noticed the count of Detroit iron on the lot!!! Blessings ✝️🙏🤗
THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO IVE BEEN HAVEING THE PROBLEMS THAT THIS PERSON HAS BUT GOT IT FIGURED OUT AS YOU DID BUT THESE DAM 02 SENSORS GOING BAD AFTER 30- 40.000 MILES IS WHAT IS MIND BLOWING FOR ME UNLESS THEY HAVEN'T BEEN CHANGED.
I have a 2005 Silverado with over 200,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. Of course I live in south Texas so I don't have some of the issues that you deal with in PRNY.
Really enjoy your videos! I bet they have been running that truck super rich for a while and the gas vapors in the crankcase remains for a while. I used to own an old '85 Chevy that was owned by a local propane company that was running a propane setup complete with a small tank. I took all that stuff off and bolted up a nice 4BBL carb and installed a new gas tank. Lot easier to gas it up than constantly need to get propane. It always smelled like a barbecue grill when it ran, even on gasoline!! Just couldn't get those vapors out of that engine. You're the best, Eric! Thank you for all you do.
I can't remember if my truck was that slow before, cam, heads ported and smoothed, newer intake (tbss), 36# injectors, holley sniper 90mm throttle body and custom 3&1/2 inch cold air intake tube. Oh, forgot the shorty headers and 2600 stall FTI converter. A lot of blood, sweat and tears, (not to mention $), but it's a blast to drive. I had to rebuild the tranny after all the engine upgrades. 210,000 miles couldn't take the extra power. I put the converter in while doing that. We spend a lot of money on our machines, but like Arnie Cunningham said on Christine, "there is nothing finer than being behind the wheel of your own car". Thanks Eric O and family for all the fine videos. God bless y'all.
I always want to know what the values of sensors should be. Because some times I see the information or value. But don't always know generally what every value should be.
Great channel. After a 25 year career in the dealership world I can say this is all good advice. Gotta love a guy how's not afraid to actually learn his craft and step past the parts swap routine practiced by so many. As illustrated by the Quick Lube shop referenced here, sometimes just throwing an air filter isn't enough. Nice work!
Eric, you're one of the dying breed of real auto mechanics. If I had a car and lived within driving distance of your shop, you would get my business, because I know you would do the same as myself, do it right!
Calling Eric "A guy that JUST FIXES CARS" is like calling a chef from the Cordon Bleu just a cook in a greasy spoon diner. He is not some hack shade tree mechanic. This guy knows his craft very well and is willing to share his knowledge with us.
Wish you lived in my area. Even though I’m mechanical inclined, I’d definitely take my truck to your shop just because how much honest work you do. Definitely glad I found your channel about a year ago. GREAT work man!
I had that same problem with a CRC can and found the nozzle just wasn't snapped into the can all the way. Gave the button a harder push to snap it in and the problem was solved.
I had the exact same problem . Only difference was mine goes into some sort of limp mode where it turns the stabiltrack and traction control off with the too rich / miss fire combo. It took 3 shops to find and reset the alcohol content. Thanks for the great video. It explains the problem very well.
"Thanks for watching" ..... yeah, No..... Thanks for making these videos ! ! ! As a retired mechanic I can say your ability to THINK is far and above most of the " mechanics " that I deal with now, and I use the term loosely ( should be referred to as "parts changers").
I do enjoy this type of video where you talk through the scan tool readings and what they mean, and the possible reasons for the readings. It's also good to hear what the normal values should be. I'm a DIYer and recently purchased a scan tool, so your videos help me to learn how to interpret the data I'm seeing. Thx 😊
So much to understand. Your experience is worth gold. Somehow it seems like the balance of fuel control systems is only as good as the sensors. Eric your understanding of the fuel trim numbers is valuable to make the right call. Really enjoy the learning from your videos.
Your videos are always full of classroom knowledge. Thank you for making these videos. I enjoy watching your thinking out the issue. I hope you keep doing it. Much respect.
The evap vent performance code is telling you that the vent filter is plugged and that is what throws off the alcohol content calculation in the Ecm. Love the videos. Service data describes the calculation for alcohol content.
Eric, Great video - thank you! 'Out here in the field(s) I fight for my meals I get my back into my living....' From one of the first albums I bought (not stolen from my older sister) Paul (in MA)
I have watched your anti-part swapping videos and dug into this p0172 and p0175 code for 2 days. None of the tests were responding to give me a definitive solution, out of aggravation I started part chasing, was into a Map sensor, and just returned from the auto store with a Maf sensor. Maf sensor got me to -19 from a previous -28 on both banks. Little improvement but did not solve the problem. Long story short, I found this video 2 parts too late. I reset the alcohol content and WALA! A distant thank you!
He did however have good wiper blades. In upstate NY cars i work on generally dont. No idea why people skip on that. I know this sounds weird, but graffiti paint can caps will fix the leaking problems in those cans. I do want to say that you are the first person that knows what the notches on the cap are for.
Had the same 172/175 on a 2015 yukon...mil comes and goes usually after a fill up. Fuel content was ok. But fuel trims were at -25. Cleaned the MAF and no change. Suspected the high pressure fuel pump but never changed it.

The extra product leaking around the button is how CRC is trying to get you to use more than one can every couple years.
Every thing you do is an education for us. And without a good scan tool, I'd have zero clue what was going on. Excellent video!

I like that you're letting the customer know about the PCV system malfunctioning, and giving him the option to fix it---that's being thorough
Nothing wrong with the PCV system. The oil was saturated with fuel and it was off-gassing and getting sucked in through the PCV system.

Well great. I just bought a can of CRC MAF cleaner and haven't used it yet. Thanks for the heads up.
I learn something new from every video you post. Thanks Mr O.
I love that you call Napa crapper
You'd have a blast plugging into my Burb.. 240k and counting 👊💪🤑
That is a neat trick with the q tip.I never would have thought of.
I like these scan tool videos, the ecu is the best partner to assist in diagnostics.
Very good video. I'm very interested in your scan tool videos and how you figure things out.
I have a 2005 Silverado with over 200,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. Of course I live in south Texas so I don't have some of the issues that you deal with in PRNY.
GM,keeping South Main Auto in business for years now!!
Don't forget Chrysler.
Or ford. For the record all vehicles have there issues.
@@alaskarailroad3996 Nah. He said he doesn't see many Fords. Chrysler and GM just have more issues than the others...
Every job that you do is so easy
Till I start diagnostic in myself😅😅😅
I appreciate all the videos to you there really help people
Thanks Mr. O. I like cruising around town with you. It's cool!!!! And in a Chevy THUNDER it's all the better!
I had to look up lambda and Stoichiometric combustion, I learn something from everyone of your videos!
@11:57 " you know when you're talking volumetric efficiency " we were sitting around the dinner table last night and that subject came up...
I enjoy the technical videos. It helps me with my stuff.
Nice work!
Hey Rick, do you have any connection to the bomber you have pictured?
"I got a whole Chevy hate theme going on here..." Classic!!
I’ll take all the videos I can get on scan tool usage, especially when you’re explaining how to interpret the data. Thanks for showing.
PHAD would be proud 😅. Great work as always!
Eric, you're one of the dying breed of real auto mechanics. If I had a car and lived within driving distance of your shop, you would get my business, because I know you would do the same as myself, do it right!
No it makes perfect sense. All about feed backs. Well explained. Thank you
My 99 Chevy thunder is about to finally break in half. Not bad an extra 12 years
For a guy that just fixes cars you are a master. Thankyou once again.
Calling Eric "A guy that JUST FIXES CARS" is like calling a chef from the Cordon Bleu just a cook in a greasy spoon diner. He is not some hack shade tree mechanic. This guy knows his craft very well and is willing to share his knowledge with us.
@@Budds36 I am quoting him (Eric), I think he is a master.
Everything you do is beneficial for us Eric. Not everything involves getting the spanners and Big Nasty out.
Showing off the big ‘ol JD mini excavator!! Front and center in the windshield. DEERE POWER BABBYYY!
Wish you lived in my area. Even though I’m mechanical inclined, I’d definitely take my truck to your shop just because how much honest work you do. Definitely glad I found your channel about a year ago. GREAT work man!
took this one to a Phase 4... good work Mathew...
Yes please, may we have more scanner videos!
This is exactly what’s going on with my 2007 suburban about to reset it it’s been running rough kinda a misfire
I guess only the flex fuels have issues
"Thanks for watching" ..... yeah, No..... Thanks for making these videos ! ! !
As a retired mechanic I can say your ability to THINK is far and above most of the " mechanics " that I deal with now, and I use the term loosely ( should be referred to as "parts changers").
I do enjoy this type of video where you talk through the scan tool readings and what they mean, and the possible reasons for the readings. It's also good to hear what the normal values should be. I'm a DIYer and recently purchased a scan tool, so your videos help me to learn how to interpret the data I'm seeing. Thx 😊
You know why his welds are so good? He takes pride in his work, doesn't want the customer coming back.
So much to understand. Your experience is worth gold. Somehow it seems like the balance of fuel control systems is only as good as the sensors. Eric your understanding of the fuel trim numbers is valuable to make the right call. Really enjoy the learning from your videos.
These videos are great. Because they show your learned, methodical approach to fixing these things. Good on ya.
I like seeing the scan tool diagnostics. I have a scan tool that shows all those numbers but am not sure what they are suppose to be. Nice to learn.
Watching your videos are like getting identifix with video explanations of what to test and look for. I love it
Than you Eric O. for another Great video.Yoy never let us down.
I bought a crc mass airflow cleaner a month ago and didn’t have any issues with my can.
Eric,
Great video - thank you!

...I was just going to ask how the alcohol percentage is calculated...and boom...you answered. Love this channel.
Great repair job Mr O. Didn't even half to open the parts cannon on this Chevrolet!!!😅
If filling the fuel creates a noticeable computer event, the evap system is the first place to look.
Eric, another great diag because of your knowledge history of all the makes. Get ready for mud season next. Keep em coming
Lol love your comment , “I have smelt stinkier” , that’s such an Aussie comment. Love you work Eric .
