Polytheist here, and I am interested in the historical development of Judaism and Christianity. Gnosticism sounds very interesting, reminds me of other esoteric mystery belief systems such as Mithraism and Hermeticism.
One always will be able to come up with fantastic story that will envelope the previous one, since we are still present in the realm of fantasy and fiction. Unfortunately for everybody, after all this marvellous beginning(s) and past, rich with all sorts of miracles, all we have now, is the reality - the kingdom of Chaos, as they say in that gospels. If no one gives us more than just another claim - an evidence or proof of any kind will suffice - we have to deal with our reality in terms of science and critical thinking. Very nice, informative and dense speech, by the way.

Gnostics resonate with the eastern philosophies/religions... where a Guru (realised soul) can initiate the student to “realise” the divine within, and so connect with the universal divine , and ultimately merge with the source. We regard Gnostics as holding the original SPIRITUAL message of Jesus .. which was lost with the romamized/politicicized/Paul-ean Christianity we see today.
The Gospel of Judas and The Gospel of Thomas can be harmonized side by side. Sequentially aligned thoughts, words & rhetoric are highlighted with colour for ease of comparison & contrast. Using this sequential harmony, line by line, each book seems to provide insight into the other. (C.f. angelfire. com/in4/universalism/ThomasJudasIscariot. html )

Ramtha's School of Enlightenment (RSE) is an American spiritual sect near the rural town of Yelm, Washington, U.S. The school was established in 1988 by J. Z. L. Ron Hubbard was an escoterosist and Satanist, so would have been well aware of the gnostic texts (fyi: I'm not saying gnosticism is satanic) It wouldn't be too surprising if Hubbard wasn't inspired by the gnostic gospels, when he was coming up with his Xenu story and subsequently Scientology. I myself have been inspired by gnostic and Sumerian texts when writing my own works.
Isaiah 53:5, But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes, we are healed. For salvation, people just need to follow the way they did it in Acts? They were baptized in the water and of the spirit. Here's why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled and rising again from the dead. That's what Acts 2:38 is. We must obey the gospel, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ... Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in Heaven. St John 3:3-5, EXCEPT a man be born of WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of GOD. We can't come up with our own gospel. Galatians 1:8-9, But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Don't be cursed. One way for all people. Jews, Gentiles, and Samaritan. Our salvation has to match-up with the scriptures and no scriptures on the subject can be taken away. Eternity is TOOO long to be WRONG! st John 5:39, Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. The gospels show what Christ has done on the cross for us. The book of Acts shows us the beginning of Christ's Church and how to enter the Church, obeying Acts 2:38. The letters were written to the Church to show us how to behave now that we are born again into the Church. It's better to walk alone than to walk with a crowd going in the wrong direction. Are we supposed to follow the teachings of the apostles? Acts 2:42, They continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrines. Ephesians 2:20, We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. If you believe in this message, help spread it in the name of Jesus Christ. God bless you!
Why does the bread become consumed? Why is the grain transmuted from earth and again into the bread? Teleology is the provenience of intellect, and knowledge and secrecy are like bread and water.
As hunger calls for food and thirst for water..so what does this deep longing in my heart call for..it longs for satisfaction by who or how..as a car runs on gas..my spirit must run on God..for hope, filling, peace and comfort I must go to him..the Christian God foots that bill for me..maybe not for everyone. The beauty of Theism is that it makes possible a rship with that which is stronger than him. If you had a rich uncle who could help you but refuse his help because you don't understand him..that would not be wise. If you refuse help from that who is stronger than you, how shall you be helped? Agnostic is appealing but not satisfying.. What makes a person a friend is the rship you have with him/ her..not merely knowing their name#..From Nairobi. Kenya
And you know that same beauty exists in the nihilism and self-humbling views of Buddhism/Taoism, where we no longer need a stronger party to aid us in our selfish endeavours because all desire is simply that: selfish. And once we learn of our inherent selfishness and constant fight for senseless desires, we become aware of our present situation with a sense of gratitude, less fixated on the impossibility of fixing what cannot be made to mend, and less inclined to be envious, less honour-killing prone, less belligerent to protect religious values, etc. For some reason, call it logic perhaps, I find that brings much more peace than spending an eternity with outspread arms, begging a cryptic God to answer our unanswerable prayers, justifying His silence with confirmation biases (He works in mysterious ways ...), and having to grapple with why God would value some lives and toss away others in order for His "Kingdom come" (for example, how he hardened the hearts of King Saul and the Egyptian Pharaoh when it was perfectly clear they never meant to cause harm to the ones they've loved but as explicitly detailed in the Bible were made to be the bad guys by God himself) --- does that bring peace to you? It never sat right with me that God could call himself compassionate and yet cause humans to undergo so much trauma and tragedy for His own glory (literally, killing His own Son so that people will see how graceful He is??? How about no intentional killing of anyone?) And what of Sarai, who was so desperate for a child that she allowed the copulation of her handmaiden Haigar and her 100 year old husband Abram, only to have her child-barren desperation lead to God cursing humanity with the still-ongoing blood war between Jews and Muslims begatten by the separation of half brothers Ishmael and Jacob. Does this truly bring you peace, may I ask?
The Romans murdered Peter, yet they claim their institution was established by the person they crucified? Does it seem like mankind will believe whatever they're told to believe?
Consider it the ultimate presenter power-play. Next to eating a steak and smoking a cigar during the talk, there are few better ways to scream “I don’t hive a ****!” while preserving dignity
As an atheist, it annoys me when people use the word "agnostic" out of context. The colloquial definition is somebody who claims that we can not know and/or don't know about whether or not God exists, and what not. Obviously, the Gnostics were a very different group, and "agnostics" would thus be precisely the opposite, aka, everybody else. So the proper definition, without reference to the religious groups, as Brat suggests, would be Gnostic = possessor of hidden/secret knowledge, and Agnostic = not gnostic. The colloquial definition of agnostic is very misleading. So I avoid beating around the bush and just use "atheist," meaning "not theist."
BlackEpyon Words mean what they mean, not what you construe them to be by way of analogy. How can you be mislead, since you have demonstrated that you know the actual meanings of the words? Also, before there can be an A-theist, A-gnostic, A-anything, there has to be a theist, gnostic, etc in the first place - so why do you start out with what "agnostic" means, and then claim gnostic, the word agonstic is derived from, is misleading? Confused much you are... Language is not static.
+BlackEpyon The definition you hear from Bart in part two is so beautiful I adopted it for myself is: Agnostic is about knowing and if you admit you don't know if God exists. Atheism is about belief and if you don't believe that God exists. Bart says that because he is a scholar he prefers knowledge over belief so he identifies as agnostic. :)
niv tom "Gnostic" was originally used to define a sect that ran parallel to ancient Judaism (and even crept it's way into Christianity in some denominations), who basically said that knowledge of the kingdom of heaven had to be revealed, it could not be learned. If you had to ask, you weren't in the know. I've almost certainly mis-characterized these guys, but the group is hard to pin down. Point is that the term "Gnostic," which you will notice that auto-correct always capitalizes, while intrinsically meant "having (hidden) knowledge" in reference to the hidden secrets of heaven, the context is different that what is used today. HOWEVER, this is beside the point. Who goes around asking if you KNOW if God exists? They always ask you if you BELIEVE, because in the faith, belief is more important than knowledge. Epistemologicaly, we are dealing with two different questions. Atheists who call themselves agnostics instead of atheist are dancing around the issue in an attempt to not seem as dogmatic as the religious claim we are. It pisses me off sometimes, because the religious go out of their way to claim that an atheist actively believes against God, and other such mischaracterizations.
i respect how he slides in Jesus is the Son of God yet knows alot of the teachings in the Bible are a wee bit twisted. Thanks to teaching like this sheeple in church are wakeing up. God bless you sir
The Greeks felt that way too, their pantheon wasn't even composed of well-meaning gods. Later someone proposed this dilemma: 1. God is great 2. God is good 3. Bad things happen. One of the above must be wrong. Which do you choose to discard? Removing 3 blames the victims, removing 2 is terrible, 1 means God is hapless or too distant to care about humans, like Crom.
Shit, I can't watch this. I'm writing a book about exactly this without knowing of this idea, and I can't let this affect it. Too many coincidences enough. I can't do it.

48:30 He's wrong. Peters family owned the fishing monopoly in Galilee. The apostles were actually former Rabbinical students who were rejected for reasons of credential-ism. Instead of taking in 12 year old boys as students, Jesus chose his apostles for divine reasons we'll never know. Jesus at that time had S'mikah which meant he had authority to officially interpret scripture. Israel was without a Rabbi who held S'mikah for 12 years since the passing of Hillel who Jesus trained under (unless you believe he was a carpenter and his knowledge of Torah came out of thin air). The S'mikah title also held political power so he wasn't just a local priest. John The Baptist was actually next in line to be High Priest of all of Israel. What was happening was a faction within the Pharisee's was established for a long time. Some viewed the glass half empty, others viewed the glass half full. The half full side eventually dominated all Judaism and became today's Sephardic Orthodox Judaism which has stood for 2000 years. How in the mid 1800's Rabbi's magically appeared all over Russia, Ukraine, etc is simply a mystery. How Jewish Exergete's all of a sudden pop out of the woodwork from Germany and Ukraine in the early 1800's. What about the previous 1800 years? How did *millions* flood from Russia into Israel and are *still* arriving daily? It's such an odd mystery.
In India, there is a time for Christ's crucifixion (indeed) to be reconciled by a volunteer believer, who is crucified and crucified just as the Romans used to crucify those who were punished, according to a study that said the victim lived in a state of crucifixion usually around 12 hours. Hours so he would not die and recover. He's wounded, of course, but he will not die. ןn one place it is said that it was on the eve of Passover and elsewhere it is written that it was on the holiday, and in any case a senior close associate of Jesus turned to the Roman in charge and told him that the Jews should not be hanged and must be buried " "If it is on the eve of the holiday, it must be before the holiday begins, and if it is in the evening, a little late, but that evening. In all the options I mentioned above, it is not possible at any time that 11 hours have passed. From here it may be that he fainted but did not die. When the victim and his men took Jesus out of the cross and carried him to the burial cave, they knew from long experience of other crucifixions that the Romans had committed in their own citizens because Jesus might survive the short crucifixion. Jesus had many opponents and enemies among Roman rule and the rule of the rabbis. On the hierarchy order of both of them is threatened. And therefore the close associate blocked the cave in the rock, which showed all the "supposed abandonment of the corpse" and after the foreigners had left. The intimates returned to the cave and began to take care of Jesus until he awoke, and then they took him out of the cave and hid him elsewhere and then smuggled him away from the borders of the country from Judea and the Roman Empire. to fur west of Europe or Fur east of Assia or fur south of Africa. after his close family & friends secretly joined him. there are stories about jesus moved to India' or Ethiopia' Frence... They saw him after they thought he was dead. It was a time of loss of the way, there were a lot of prophets on their own behalf, and many messiahs who promised salvation and were killed by the Romans, the Romans were rude, replacing the High Priest with a man who had just executed his brother. The situation was all the deep religious pangs of Hasidim and Tamim, and they believed that he had come back for a brief visit from the other world. The amount of hope The motivation and energy that this story has infused into the souls and bodies of its followers and of all who have heard it has been and still is so enormous that it holds them and their successors throughout the generations to this day.
They paired Jesus's side when normally they only break the legs of ppl on crucifix. Jesus did die for you. Believe whatever lie u want to enjoy living in sin but in the end "EVERY knee should shall now and EVERY tongue confess Jesus Christ IS LORD."

John beheld four angels standing on the corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the winds should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. These symbols are illustrative of the troubles that will come upon the earth, but that the angels of God have been mercifully holding back until the servants of God should be sealed in their foreheads.
You might think this is a joke but in reality it is highly esoteric knowledge. Group theory contains a deep mystical meaning that has yet to be uncovered.

Jewish texts and also other prevailing texts at that time, such as infancy gospel of Thomas which has the same narrative of Jesus giving life to clay birds.

If Judas betrayal was part of a prophecy, then he was abiding by Gods plan. He did what he was born to do.
That's RIGHTTTTttttttt...... It's an old and common theme through antiquity.
he had no free will?
@ darth nader Nope, Judas did not have freewill... I cant look up the verse right now, but it says essentially, "Jesus dipped the bread and handed it to Judas. When Judas ate of the bread Satan entered him. Then Jesus said, "What you do- do it quickly".
If you want the verse- reply to this- I can look it up later.
yaryar1976 .. Judas was a part of the roman god tales nothing more ..
Apparently he was prophesied to betray Jesus in the cannon so this argument could stand true. Technically he obeyed God

Love this teacher and his style. I recommend this talk (Part 2 follows) because Professor Erhman describes what was going on with written religious books in the earliest growth of the Jewish-Christian sect. For people who want to understand the context and the time, and consider plausible truths, I think this doc is superior to many. Enjoy. ps "This world was created by a bloodthirsty rebel and a fool" (according to the Gnostic writings)...:)...well...that would certainly explain a lot, wouldn't it? #ProfessorErhman #CharmingSocialScientists #EvidencevsDogma #PlausibleTruth

As described, Gnosticism sounds a whole helluva lot like Scientology's Xenu story.
Also the idea that you need to know the secret that cannot be told to everyone.
L. Ron Hubbard was an escoterosist and Satanist, so would have been well aware of the gnostic texts (fyi: I'm not saying gnosticism is satanic)
It wouldn't be too surprising if Hubbard wasn't inspired by the gnostic gospels, when he was coming up with his Xenu story and subsequently Scientology.
I myself have been inspired by gnostic and Sumerian texts when writing my own works.
I think its fascinating.
God bless you!
i was wondering why would the imperfect divine beings want to entrap the parts of divine...
Why does the bread become consumed? Why is the grain transmuted from earth and again into the bread? Teleology is the provenience of intellect, and knowledge and secrecy are like bread and water.

Amazing, really enjoy listening your speech. Really interesting
Sound more believable than the rest of the writings.
This is phenomenal, I always had the feeling to know about Judas, a revelation? no! just a hunch.

There are around 60 gospels, including the four that arbitrarily made the cut.
Language is not static.
well put
well put!
niv tom
"Gnostic" was originally used to define a sect that ran parallel to ancient Judaism (and even crept it's way into Christianity in some denominations), who basically said that knowledge of the kingdom of heaven had to be revealed, it could not be learned.
I was wondering why the public was having so much fun, then I read where the lesson took place. All clear now...
Excellent!

"The world is a cosmic disaster..."
Well that explains a lot.

The date of the writings makes its credibility.
44:00 kinda sounds like a bill hicks bit about orthodoxy. And the way he moves his hands lol
It's always fun to watch Bart talk and I learn so much.

You might think this is a joke but in reality it is highly esoteric knowledge. Group theory contains a deep mystical meaning that has yet to be uncovered.
Well, to be fair, the Abelites are all dead, so .. they really can't do anything ..
I encourage folks to read this script for themselves, this is an unjustly oversimplified explanation with too much emphasis on the unimportant and complete omission of the important. It does however fit nicely into his understanding of the "Gnostics"
To be fair when Cain killed his brother it was before anyone had written down any laws. How could god expect good behavior when he could not bother to tell them the rules. Besides god kind of riled him up since he treated Cain poorly.
