I don't know if it's true but I've always heard that on higher mile engines, it's not a good idea to switch from conventional to full synthetic oil. However, since you just replaced your engine, I'd say that you can run whatever you want. Personally, I always ran Rotella T4 in my ISX 15 until I had it rebuilt at nearly 1M miles. I've always done oil drains and PMs between 20-25K and changed the fuel filters and water separators every second time. After the rebuild, I still ran the T4 until the 3rd oil drain, then switched to T6. I never noticed any difference in oil consumption but, that was always minimal anyway and the oil samples always came back good. I also always use OEM filters. My engines say Cummins on them so, they get Cummins filters.
I run Shafer oil 🛢 in my 12.7 change oil every 60-70k with oil filters every 20k now 1.2m miles, have it turned up to 525hp 10 speed. Old columbia snider glider kit. Other than detroit oil leaks truck runs hard, every 120k when i run overhead i inspect cam, rollers and so on, looks cleen (brand new) with no Signs of wear damage. Shafer oil is out of st louis mo their competitor is amzoil.
Honestly since you just got a rebuild I'd go Synthetic. I would not switch from regular to synthetic on an older engine though, even though it's not the end of the world. Synthetic has extra additives and you can go the extra distance. Regular oil is still fine. Honestly there's not really a right and wrong answer here, as long as you do regular oil changes and use the right thickness (W), you're good! ✌️
I ran Delvac until last change. It used to burn 1 gallon at 10k miles. Switched to Rotella T4. NO OIL BURN at 10k miles. Changed again with Rotella. Better oil.

O/o here I’ve ran regular diesel oil. Then went to synthetic. I don’t believe in full synthetic. I’m going with blend from now on. It’s an old motor all they had was regular in early 2000s. Synthetic cleans too good. Blend for me every 15000 from now on!

Id get that oil bypass. Stick with delvac. I used that oil in my 579 when i had it changed it out 12,500-15,000 miles.
