- This is fun, just plain fun! I wish I bought more for gifts when I got this on sale! It's still a good value at full price with all you get. Blick has the best price: shrsl.com/4si2w but you can get it on Amazon too: amzn.to/4gKDQMZ
*Affiliate links used
This set includes a bookmark pad of paper, 100% cotton
3 half pans of Schminke Horadam watercolor
and a DaVinci travel brush #4 round
I really enjoyed this set and found it well worth the $14 I paid (which I think was a miss-priced item now that I see it for $25) but you can just as easily cut down the watercolor paper and fill a small palette to make a similar gift set foe someone. Either way, it will be a lot of fun to give and use. Happy holidays!

I love those rainbow trees!! I would love to have a bookmark like that.
You can paint it! ua-cam.com/video/WsRedDHuIqU/v-deo.htmlsi=vOzc-14vPu9pRiWI
Hahnemuhle The Collection imperial sized loose sheets is my absolute favorite paper. The Collection replaced Cezanne and Leonardo. In theory they are slightly different & improved, but in practice I don't notice the difference. Very affordable if bought in bulk from Talas. They don't have a watermark, which might be a benefit if watermarks annoy you!
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.
Your easy paintings with this pad are so charming and fun, Lindsay. The last thing I need is more brushes and paint, lol, but I would get the pad on its own and actually looked it up when you shared it in the gift guide because I have lots of friends who are readers and would love these, I know I love Hahnemühle paper, which incidentally I have also loved the look of gouache on, and it saves the step of pre-trimming paper.
It is such a great paper and I think you'd find it really nice with gouache as well.
I think it's a great stocking stuffer. It's refreshing to see a kit with professional grade watercolors and a good brush. 🙂
It really is a great stocking stuffer!
This is a very handy set and a perfect 🎄present. The paper is 100% cotton (the Expression line), the colours are excellent quality and that brush is so cute! I enjoyed your videos painting, the trees -and your nutcracker is beautiful too.
Thank you so much!
That’s a sweet little set…would make a great gift for a beginner. TFS!
It would!
Art on the Creek uses these, bookmarks, for her swatches in a metal palette, it fits perfectly!
That's a great idea!
@ Merry Christmas 🎄
I think the cute little brush fits perfectly in those cheaper pencil extensor
You might be right! I'll have to try it!
I got this bookmark set for $12.99! 🙂 Love the paper a lot and love the colors too, even though I don't really use those specific colors very often (from any brand). But I do love me some Schmincke Horadam, though I only buy tubes when I have the option.
In general I love Hahnemuhle Harmony paper a lot. For me the main reason is that it doesn't buckle as much as Arches when not stretched. And when taped properly to a board it will dry completely flat, even after very heavy soaking and lots and lots of wet in wet. Arches does not dry so flat unfortunately and stretching gets old real quick. Not to mention that even stretched, Arches seems to buckle a little and makes heavy soaking almost impossible.
I bought this bookmark set, I think from Blick, just because it so cute, for like $13.95. Mostly I thought it was a good deal for the 3 Schminke half pans. I haven’t used it yet but glad to hear the brush is nice!
It’s a great deal, I got mine for that price too!
I bought two sets back in November for only $13.50 each from Blick’s.I think it’s a great stocking stuffer, and a bargain.
Yes! OK, I am not losing my mind:) the price was lower!
I’m so glad you mentioned the sizing going bad on Arches! I thought I was just too inexperienced to understand why my colors weren’t moving on the paper! I’ve wanted to try Schmike (sp?) and the bookmarks would be a great way to do that!
It can be so frustrating, especially when you think it's you!
I have had other brands expire too, so no I only buy what I can use within 6 months or so.
@ That’s such a good tip! Thank you so much!
@@thefrugalcrafter it truly is!
OMG 😱 lesson learnt! I have arches paper from 3 years ago and never used!! Because it’s too precious! 🤦🏽♀️ Great just great.
Really clever bookmark pad, never seen one before ❤
They sell silicone “rubber bands” that I use for backpacking to keep gear together, but I use them for my backpacking watercolor kit as well to keep everything closed and packed as securely as possible. That might be a good option for your whiskey painters flask palette to be able to travel without the box, they are more secure and longer lasting than regular rubber bands, and they come in “T” and “H” shapes as well in case you want to secure things in 3 or 4 different directions.
That is a great idea for a travel set!
I use a small one on my Schmincke palette. Works well to hold to together.
I bought one! Haven’t used it yet. Love the idea of water coloring the bookmarks. I think it’s a sweet set. I think I got mine for around $12. Can’t wait to try it out!
That is such a great price!
It won't help on the go, but the air is straight up drinkable where I live. There's a literal swamp across from my house. But since I put a big electric dehumidifier in my room, both myself and my paints are decidedly less soggy. I dont travel paint much but at home, I have no issues with squishy pans. When I'm done painting, I usually hit them with cool shot from the hairdryer or leave them open for a while so I don't put them up wet either. It might at least make them more enjoyable to use in studio and maybe more durable for the field.
Anyway, dehumidifier, love it, hope it helps.
I also really like aqua pens like pentel Aquash and water soluble ink brush pens, or dye based watercolor (hard, vibrant pans), or watercolor/inktense pencils for less messy and more travel convenient options. Hope something there helps someone.
Good tips!
The pentel aquash is my favorite water brush too! S many new designs have come out, but it’s still my favorite!
the $25 price (today) at Blick is worth it, too bad they used the cadmium paint (toxic). Also folks, did you notice Amazon is selling it for more than Blick's ? I always check other sources before buying at Amazon
I saw that, and it's often higher on amazon for lots of things!
Amazon is almost always more expensive for the supplies I use.
I wouldn't trust what Epsteins partners-in-crime Gates, Fauci etc call 'toxic'. They often blow things out of proportion to create unnecessary fear & regulations on us slaves while they're destroying the planet & committing mass genocide for #LandGrabs and shutting down mom & pop/small businesses for market dominance & monopolies. They have everything backwards in their rules for thee, but not for me rackets.
Thank you for the review! Lol, watching you also reminds me of my own Schmincke woes. Their paints are lovely, but sometimes I question their color choices… anyways, Happy Holidays and have a very Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄 ❤
I’m glad you like it! Happy Holidays to you too!
I should have bought the set while it was on the introductory price, but Blick is always a rabbit hole to find enough to meet shipping. But now, regrets. I'll remember next time I see a screaming deal there. Interesting review. Sometimes I think the manufacturers create bad paint triads to encourage people to fill in with the right paints, because now someone will need to go out and get a Q Rose for the cool triad, etc. Hahnemuehle "The Collection" paper is awesome. If they used that paper in these bookmarks, then you have a wonderful surface.
Beautiful rainbow trees ty Lindsay happy holidays to you
Happy holidays!
@@thefrugalcrafter ty Lindsay 🙂🙂
It is a nice size and quality for a gift. Thanks for the review!
You are very welcome!
Schminke paints are a struggle, especially when you are used to MGraham. I bought a set when the super granulating colors were hyped. I don't mind it but it wasn't money well spent. I rarely use it. They are very popular though. I might try them again but spritz them with water first.
Thanks.
You're welcome!
If Hahnemuhle is watching can this paper (Expression) be made more easily available in the States? I got one of these pads at Blick and when I finally used it the other day I wish I had a sketchbook with this paper (I prefer this to their cotton rag sketchbook paper which is ... fine). There' s something about it. Will have to try an order a block from Jacksons at some point.
If you can get the paper I have a diy sketchbook tutorial that takes 2 sheets of 22x30 paper: ua-cam.com/video/rvqNAcNxbGc/v-deo.htmlsi=kzg9ipOu0w6VkjGD
I love Hahnemuhle paper! I found them when I was looking for laid paper for a calligraphy project 😅 I bought full sheets of the we paper for a sketch book I made for a Christmas gift. So naturally I bought some for myself 😂 BTW, loved the video for the bookmark ❤ Thank you.
🙏
That's cute. I would have fun with it.
Adorable set! I have hemmed and hawed over this set too! And watched the price increase 😂. I’ll just have to cut my own paper for now, lol!
Good call, albeit they will go on sale after Christmas.
If you’ve never used 100% cotton paper before it’s also a great way to try it out. I absolutely love that little brush! I keep telling myself to stop buying new brands of watercolor but they’re like Pokémon; you gotta try them all! [Stop laughing at me, Want Monster! It visits so often I’m tempted to give it a name! I got it! PIMA! An acronym for Pain In My As…I mean, Achilles (tendon)! It’s perfect since art supplies truly are my weakness.😂]
It's cheaper than smoking!
Cool red would be better. But cadmium is more valuable. You got it at a great price! I’d just use my whole collection with the bookmarks. Brush seems great I’d like to get one for travel kits!
I totally agree!
Hello, Lindsay. Thank you so much for tutorial.
You are so welcome!
Very cute set. 🙂
It's fun and a great way to practice!
Hi Lindsay, After I saw this gift set on your suggestions I ran to Blick and I did get it for the 13ish dollars but a week later they were price at 25. I knew this was a bargain since the watercolors individually alone would be worth more. In Artemiranda I recently bought a Da Vinci gift set for around 46ish which is similar to this one but with Da Vinci full synthetic brushes and a trio of tubes from Schminckle Horadam and a Block of Sketchbook from Hannemuhle-100 cotton!
It sounds like you got a great deal!
If you add a slight crimp to your metal lid/water cup, it will fit more tightly. :)
I will have to try that!
I wonder if you could carefully bend the side of the water receptacle for that pallet.? To make it fit a little tighter. That’s disappointing for a relatively pricey item.😢I love unique palettes too!
That is a great idea, I will try it!
You’re a champion at second guessing yourself. Enjoy your things!
Btw, I have schminke horadam colours and they never run. I wonder why yours do.
Great review! I've had good experience with my small da'Vinci Nova brushes for details, they work well. Sizing is something I would love to see you do a video on! Soft sizing vs hard sizing and which brands have which. Recently, I've been made aware how important the type of sizing is. But it isn't listed on watercolor paper labels. Also, the Bee Creative Watercolor Journal / Book is the sizing soft? Some people rave about how it lays flat. Others have issues with lifting / scraping possibly due to soft sizing?. The 8.5" x 11" sketchbook size has 30 pages of 100 cotton 140 lb watercolor paper for about $19 at Jerry's and Blick . Out of stock currently, expected back in between Dec. 29 - Jan 13.
I'm not sure about the sketchbook, but th 100% cotton bee watercolor paper I've bought in 6"x9" and 22x30 sheets are softer sized than arches.
I purchased 2 of these for gifts when you pointed out the deal. I didn’t get one for me, so sad.
Oh no!
Hi Lindsay. Do you have an authentic whiskey painters set?
No, I figured if it was Schminke it would be the authentic one.
@thefrugalcrafter I think neither is "authentic" per say... They are made by an Italian company called Fome! I have the non water container version (2083). The water container one is 2086. They also make some of the larger heavierweight palettes used by companies like MaimeriBlu I think too along with other design variations. Cornelissen and Loxley in UK sell empty ones. I think Gwartzman's in Canada sell them too. May be cheaper for those who want empty versions. Not nearly as many colours as Whiskey painters though - just boring black! 😂
In europe we can only buy the bookmarkpaper.I ought the psper for 8 euro and put a waterbrush amd made a dotcard from my paints.A perfect gift.
Hi! I found it on Amazon Germany for 25€ 👍🏻. Worth looking around online.
Great idea!
So strange that they didn't include magenta in the triad, would have been great to have a CYM. But a very cute set! Nice that the brush is actually good. I love how many times you've talked me out of the Schmincke whiskey painters palette 🤣 I can see how this would have been very innovative at one time, but in this age of everyone carrying water bottles, collapsible cups, and/or waterbrushes, I think it's less useful. I guess you could swap out the pans for paints you like better and put a hairband around it to keep the cup on if you really wanted to use it in the field. And/or, you might be able to gently bend the long sides of the cup so the fit is snugger.
Neat! Great idea for last minute gift that you don't have to mail. And most wc painters can always use supplies on-hand, to do bookmarks if necessary.
Schmincke & Holbein (so far) are one of my fave wcs. But I haven't been painting in wc long enough to really make a more objective decision. I have not used near as many brands as you for as long as you have. My other brands that I like & enjoy are Daniel Smith & Winsor&Newton because those are the first brands I bought the most of. I have bits & pieces of other brands or handmade colors. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to you & Yours! 🎄🎁🌲
Svhmonke and holbein are very similar to me in sheer news. I think it's not a matter of what's best, but what works best for each artist. Once you ate using pro paints the quality is pretty similar but the characteristics will differ a bit. Use what you like:)
$58 For the kit and 25 just for thr bookmarks on Amazon in canada
I think that's a bit steep, I'd see if another art store carries it or try Jacksons.
I do agree that the color selection is poor, I would have rather have a cooler red. But I love the bookmark...I had been contemplating getting it for the paper, and the brand, but the color selection through me off.
I got it for$10 on a black Friday sale maybe. I really like it but damn it's that red ugly. Haha
