Man I love your videos. Many tech channels would have gone and given us a bunch of bench marks, but I don’t understand those. What I do understand is that it takes a lot longer to open the notion app. Just really superb testing and understanding of general audiences I think.

The surface pro are notorious to get very hot and to destroy their own battery that swell and push the screen's glue to the point of making the screen have a curvature / bump, it's a very badly engineered device overall, and i'm saying this because i've been owning surface pro's tablets since the surface pro 2 upto surface pro 7, i had to rma 4 of them for battery swelling issue ever since the surface pro 3, the surface pro 4 and seven were the worst offender battery swelling wise. the i7 versions just generate too much heat. But people get swollen batteries with i5 too.

Personally I think comparing it to an iPad is wrong.. it is a 2in1 but it goes without saying that it’s mainly a “laptop” not a tablet. Enjoyed your review and you do have some valid points 😊

Your right. Ipads are luxury products for entertainment, because although their called Pro you cant use them for professional work unless you buy an Mac also.
Surfaces are 2 in 1s and the most versatile computers out there. With the Surface Dock they easily replace a desktop Pc, while Ipads are just big Iphones.

THIS. The iPad is not a 2 in 1, it's just a tablet. Not a fair comparison at all. It's like comparing a phone to a laptop. The 2 in 1 Surface Pro is supposed to be a more compact version of a laptop that can also be used as a tablet without sacrificing the laptop capabilities. Not a tablet that can also be used as a laptop. This machine is very powerful and no competitor is even close to having anything like this. The Surface Pro's competition are either very powerful tablets or literally just another laptop..

@segura9 I didn't get that far, my bad. I see he went on to compare it to the Samsung Tab with DeX. As a Samsung Galaxy flagship user, I've used DeX and it is not very good. I think he's underselling the Surface throughout this video. But I guess for the average consumer the things he does cover are what might matter the most to some..

I think, this comparison is not apple to apple. Surface pro is using desktop OS (Win 11) and the others just a limited mobile OS (iPad OS and Android). For my current workflow, I would choose Surface Pro despite it's performance.

Really appreciate your trying some non-Apple devices. Sure, many Apple-heavy content creators can get by with just an iPad as their sole computing device, but for the vast majority of us (I think) who use Office programs for work, the iPad is just so difficult to use efficiently. Dragging and dropping doesn’t work as it should, Files is getting better but still not great, and so on. It seems that someday we’ll get to a point where Microsoft is making hardware that works as well as current Apple M series devices…and similarly the iPad experience will be more useful for a non-content creator trying mainly to do computer things with further software improvements…we’re just not there yet.

And what the heck is on iOS that if you launch any videostreaming app, you can't begin to move that down bar. I either have to tap skip few seconds button for like 10-20 times and after that I can drag it?!! It's on all iOS apps. Netflix, Viaplay, SkyShowTime etc. I so pissed that all Apple users talk like its something completely unique bug free envinronment if it has mouldy apple logo on it. I finally got Mac and iOS device and BOTH have been disappointing and not being even remotely good as fans claim.

One thing that I really dislike is that there is no headphone jack! As a student, the surface pro seems like a great choice since it can replace the iPad for taking notes and a laptop for writing papers, but the high price PLUS the separate keyboard and pen just make it so much more expensive. I also like to play around with FL Studio on my free time as well as some simple video editing, so the base model M1 MBP 13" + iPad for notes is the best for me. Almost rocking 3 years on this machine and it's still going like a beast!

🤔🧐All I know is I switched to the Surface Pro many years ago and it was the best decision for me. I literally can’t ever go back to using a laptop. I used to be a diehard HP / Lenovo user. I usually would get a new Surface Pro every two years BUT COVID messed me up with my Surface Pro cycling process so here I am getting a Surface Pro 9. I hate that they took away the earphone jack. I’m a little nervous because of the mixed reviews because I’m expecting it to be as amazing as the one that I’m currently replacing because it is “dying” (I should have replaced it 2 years ago & definitely a year ago). 😩

Saw your post and wanted to add. I quite like the Surface Pro line. I use iPads also so in both systems.
I like the idea of having just a screen to work off as the keyboard can be Bluetooth and if the surface is on a stand I can have it head height for a better viewing angle.
Only gripes are battery life and with the 9… I guess you will save a lot as they depreciate fast. After 6 months you get amazing deals but at the same time you are close to being one gen of chop behind and these intel chips are not efficient.

    • @LovingAtlanta

@@RemofRenaissance - 👍 I truly enjoyed your post. You make some good points. I’ve come to realize that these companies don’t care what I think so I try to be like water and adapt. When you mentioned that you also use the iPad, you reminded me that when I first switched to the Surface Pro I also had an iPad that I used at the time. I would switch between the two and use them at the same time for various reasons. I was very proud of & happy to have my iPad. I was an early iPad adopter with the first gen and have had several but after a short while I was found myself using my Surface Pro exclusively. NO ONE is making me say this, but I literally only need the Surface Pro. I keep my files on an external hard drive. I work on important projects and I can “plug & play” on any device if one “crashes or dies”…I don’t miss a beat. 😂 So far I love the Surface Pro 9. I’m not having any issues. I don’t like NOT having the headphone jack, but like with my iPhone…I will eventually get over it…😂 I don’t like NOT having the USB port…but I have the dongle / adapter thingy and I’m getting over NOT having it. 😂 I’m learning to appreciate the two Thunderboltᵀᴹ 4 USB-C® ports that I do have.😊 Wishing you the best in 2024. 🙏💝

@@LovingAtlanta You are welcome and I could have said more. Many people bash the Surface Pro lineup but as you say it is really useful. I also had the first iPad too and find it great using alongside a Windows device. Photo edits and some quick note taking I do on the iPad.
I never responded to your comment on purchase. I think you will be happy with the SP9 if coming from a SP7. The build quality and display are great and I only have the base configuration (8GB Ram and i5) but really impressed with the speed. I was lucky enough for my workplace to give me a Surface Pro 5 and it lasted years. Only the battery life was an issue so that convinced me to get a personal one.
Price can also be an issue which is why I went for 8GB RAM (perhaps I will regret) but it copes with the spreadsheet work I do and data analysis. But if you time it now, you will get a 16GB machine for the price that 8GB was.
Happy 2024 to you also and like I said the ability to put on a stand and have no keyboard in the way is seriously underrated for the SP series and remember - you can reuse your old Surface Pen so yo don'ty need to buy the new ones!

      @RemofRenaissance 8 місяців тому +1

@@LovingAtlanta Also if you can - maybe hold out till later in 2024 for the updated Surface Pro. Ofcourse it will be more expensive but I think they will fix the battery life problem as the newer processors are more power efficient.

@@RemofRenaissance - 👍Good points. I think you can make do with the 8GB if you choose to store files on an external portable Hard Drive (that’s what I do) I mostly started to things that way in case the system ever crashed I can just move to another machine and keep moving. 😂
      Cheers and Happy New Year.💝

As someone who owns the current M2 12.9 Ipad and a Surface Pro 7 I totally agree (and can relate) with the impressions. The surface just doesn't come close to the battery life of the ipad, and the fans spinning up when charging or just randomly is frustrating. That said, having a fully functional w10 OS is just so handy and the only thing that will be holding me back from getting the next iteration of surface pro is the performance on the fanless model. If it can game decently too would be a major plus!

The main advantage of a Surface is that you can install Windows programs on it. If you going to only use it to write notes and watch content, then yes the Ipad is the better option. Do you want to install architectural, editing and other complex programs, then it is better to go for a Surface. It is mainly a laptop, but also have the advantage of the touchscreen. On an ipad you can only install apps, no programs.

The biggest issue I have with the Surface line rests with the battery. I've read that it's nearly impossible to replace, with certain owners relaying that their battery life is basically nonexistent, following the first year of ownership, meaning that some have reported that they have to be constantly plugged into a power source, in order to use the device.

I’m a software engineer, and I’ve been using the surface pro 9 for work for about 6 months now.
Putting it through its paces with very highly demanding tasks and workloads, and just like you, I find it great to type on because of the keyboard and the screen.
When it comes to performance I’ve noticed that the SSD is a huge bottleneck in this device and if upgraded it would yield vast improvements in opening apps, waking up, logging in etc.
also switching to “performance” in the battery profile makes a huge difference, given that a charger is plugged in… :)

The problem with Surface NVME SSD is that... it doesn't support any standard off-the-shelf NVME SSDs.. I thought it would so I bought and shoved it in and it didnt work, so I did some research and found that a lot of people are having the same problem due to firmware not supporting PCIE 4. You could apply some custom patch to make it work but thats not really ideal.

I would add: Microsoft introduced us to 3:2 screens. They also took the hybrid category mainstream. iPad users wanting a more desktop experience? Blame the Surface Pro. IMO my pet peeves about this product is the weight distribution (it's all in the screen) and poor performance per watt CPUs. Still the iPad Pro is in the lead if you don't need corporate/desktop/more technical apps. Good video! 😀😀

I enjoy and use the the LTE feature, and use only native ARM64 apps plus Microsoft Office apps, so I don't have to use emulation which would pull down battery life. Bad comparison. You’re comparing a tablet to a PC that runs windows, plus you have multiple apps installed on the surface device. You can go settings and turn off auto start. I’ve got the surface pro 8 for 4 years and still as fast as the day I got it. But again, you’re comparing a tablet where the apps are megabytes compared to gigabytes. If you want a tablet then iPad, if you want a PC then windows.

09:50 your reference to the fans on when charging - actually this is a good thing as any form of charging increases heat through all/any components where the current is passing through including the wires/connectors/battery etc. The battery heat especially would be absorbed by all areas of the tablet.
So yeah, that's actually a positive in terms of longevity of the device in my opinion.
10:00 constant cooling isn't generating allot of heat, its stopping allot of heat from building up! if it was not constantly cooling - it would be allot hotter and well... uncomfortably warm/hot
Nice review though, the Surface Pro 9 is quite a solid contender along with Samsung and Apples Tablet its a shame it's price is a little dear - I think they recently had a £400 sale though which doesn't surprise me

I have been struggling with an M1 iPad Pro for the last two years, but I am just fed up with the compromises I have to make on software. I bought the iPad because of all the hype over iPadOS 15.4 supposedly being able to run full desktop apps. I travel abroad a lot for work, and I have for a long time had a "travel personal tech" bag packed that goes under an aircraft seat while my stuffed work laptop bag goes in overhead storage. The bag has everything I need to stay charged and connected on the move, including a 20,000 mAh power bank. So the battery life doesn't bother me too much. It's mainly a proper file manager and the ability to run full desktop apps that led me to sideline my iPad to content consumption as I bought my fourth Surface Pro.

FYI, you used the wrong English idiom there when you said you "pulled the plug"... The expression we would normally see here is "pulled the trigger" because shopping is thought of as a kind of hunting, because at the end of both you "bag it" and take it home with you... The idiom "pull the plug" is used when executive authority is used to end some sort of project, usually abruptly and prematurely, with the analogy being to remove the source of power keeping it going, which in this case is usually money, or it could be done by simple fiat. 🤔

Powerful, great screen and sound, good ram, touch screen, no keyboard, mouse or pen. Just a super powerful tablet style PC that I can plug in and setup as a work station using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I gave away apple in the early 2000's after a few hard ware issues on a mac book pro. Meaning I'm android/windows biased...I have had 3 surface pro's, currently your model but have upgraded to a WD Black 2tb ssd.
I also have a Samsung tablet s8+ for the family. For me the surface is a fully fledged laptop that can do tablet. Tablets are tablets with inferior mobile OS. To be fair, you need to compare with a macbook pro that can detach its keyboard ;)

They both have the same tablet form but of course studio is heavier but I dont mind. But surface Pro 9 looks so good! And I need it for constant office use and at times photoshop and for editing videos. Do you have a video for surface studio 1 or 2? Or a suggestion which to go for 😁

This whole comparison is wrong, these are totally different type of products, one is a full fledged OS running on a small and thin tablet and the other is running a slimmed down version of an OS that's very limited. You can't compare them as they are targeted to completely different users.

the best 2 in 1 was their Surface Book laptop. Then they ruined it by replacing it with a Studio laptop. I have both, several surface tablets over the years. Everything since the Surface Book has been a flop. They could very easily make a surface 9 into a new Surface Book by offering a solid keyboard with a dedicated gpu and extra battery in it.... which the Book literally is.

Calling dex a windows version for android in a modern day comparison is like comparing a bicycle to a boing 747 as modes of transport.
It does however make clear you are not really looking for a computer replacement in tablet format at all! rather it seems you just are looking for the right accessories and software to widen the usage of a tablet with simulated desktop experiences.
By now both Android and iOS have plenty in the way of multitasking baked in that for that purpose it makes no sense looking for a "windows" pc in a tablet form factor as running a more full blown os with a different instruction set (x86 as opposed to arm) comes with major downsides like significantly reduced battery life and slower performance for simpler tasks. It shows how well streamlined our mobile devices have gotten for such simple tasks.
The reasons to get a product like this is for example being required to run software for which no versions or alternatives exist on mobile devices, more serious multitasking or processes that require specific types or performance not able to be emulated or translated to arm, apple silicone or other similar instruction sets.
I would argue that a perfect system is unlikely, getting a few that work together well enough is potentially more beneficial in the end.

Owned three surfaces (last one was Surface Pro X, the first one). There are stuff like the slow flip of screen sometimes etc, since ever.
But for me no other tab can compare to Surface because the software I want to use on my tablet, as a software developer, only exist for desktop OS like Windows, Linux or MacOS. Not iOS or Android.
One thing I have always disliked was the useless batterylife on Surface, which they clearly finally fixed on the Surface Pro 9!!!
I would however not buy the ARM version again. Due to the lag, and some applications being not compatible even with the slow emulation. I rather pay extra for the real Intel (i5 or i7).

So the issues you're coming into is because of the fact that when start windows for the first time, you need to give it a full day to allow windows to fully index all the software on the device. Another thing when you start it up for the first time is to run a full software update before starting to use it. IOS is different with windows and does not work the same. I think you should have tried to understand windows more before bashing it entirely in the video. This was an extremely biased review. (I code for Linux and windows)

I had a surface pro 5 with windows 10, It performed amazing as a tablet! It had tablet mode with the tablet tiles, the screen rotation was just as fast as an ipad! The only thing it lacked was a microsoft store but it made up with it amazingly by turning WEBSITES INTO APPS! That was an amazing feature (the website apps would be on the tile screen). When detaching the keyboard it would go straight to tablet mode and would have lives tiles and regular tiles like an ACTUAL TABLET. My surface pro 5 died on me when i went to get its batteries replaced (the manufactures broke it). So I got a surface pro 9 expecting nothing but the best! And i have to say Microsoft really outdid themselves, they did the impossible, they made their device absolutely garbage. The completely got rid of the tablet aspect of the surface and now its just a horrible PC thats touchscreen. I was beyond disappointed, I really hope windows 12 can bring back true tablet mode and get rid of all these clunky bugs. Also surface pro 9 screen randomly disorientates 3 times a day and thats a normal thing that almost every surface pro 9 user I have spoken to has dealt with? Sorry for the rambling I've been a die hard surface fan so im just absolutely surprised by how garbage the surface pro 9 is. I may go back to windows 10 but thats just insane.

🤔All I know is I switched to the Surface Pro many years ago and it was the best decision for me. I have loved used the Surface Pro. 😩

You're comparing apples to oranges here. This thing next to the Tab S9 is pretty much an unfair fight
The surface pro is doing what other companies should follow, a full desktop experience on a small scale tablet, ultrabooks have done this since forever ago, Apple not supporting MacOS on their Ipad despite the m1 chip in there is already proof enough that they have what it takes to compete on a full scale
Same thing with S9, without Windows or similar full desktop compatibility it pales in comparison to what the surface pro can do, that in itself is the biggest difference
