The remaster sounds to have a bit more "texture" in the guitars. The song sounds cleaner too. Like if they did a minor cleanup on "ugly" frequencies. it sounds almost like it has more separation between the instruments. This is a good remaster. They didn't take away any of the intensity that made the old recording so good. And they brought thru some frequencies that newer, better tech can show that we were missing from the original recording.
If you aren't listening with very high quality headphones or studio monitors, you might not hear a difference.

I think that's exactly what's happening haha. The remaster is scooping out some of the muddy lows & low-mids at the very least, which definitely helps the elements of the mix breathe wholly while also occupying the same stereo space. Or that's my best guess.

    • @DonTagliatelleRaviolli
      @DonTagliatelleRaviolli 5 років тому +1

That 'texture' improvement you speak of in the guitar sound is maybe the same difference I spotted when playing my old Direct Metal Mastered vinyl at the same time as an original cd, while flicking my amp between cd and phono. The guitars on the vinyl, although distorted (of course), had much more detail, 'information' and, as you call it 'texture' than the cd. This would of course have been partly due to the fact that the analogue vinyl source carries more information than the digital source. If they got the remaster to sound something the same, then great. Cd had better low-mids and lows. Instruments had more seperation. Bass and drums had more definition and punch. Vocals and guitars more detail and texture on the vinyl. Modern cd players with modern dacs are much better than old ones at digging out and making the most of the information on cd's now, btw. That's just an aside. Really I just wanted to say I think I know what you mean by 'texture' in the guitar reproduction. Maybe one day I'll shell out for a high bit rate download of the new remaster. Not the vinyl with my shitty old record deck and I ain't buying a new one when I just bought a new Marantz cd player and amp.

I like the original one for some reason.
      It's not nostalgia
Cause I was living under a rock and found this song just a week ago.
But the original has a weird and not clear audio which is simple yet aesthetic.

OG just sounds more angry and emotive. I grew up listening to this one on cassette - it was my first actual metal album. The remaster sounds fine, better than expected, but there is a slight sheen to it that doesn't sound as primal.

    • @eddie-sf7hn
      @eddie-sf7hn 2 роки тому +2

The bass is harder to hear on the remaster, and the drums have lost some of their swing with the volume increase.
If you're hearing them both in the background the remaster will stand out more from the crowd, but if you want to listen to the music the OG is the way to go IMO.

We have listened to these albums in thier old forms your ears are trained to those albums, you have to be completely deaf to think the original sounds better. The remaster is balanced clear, less reverb and thin and scooped out than the original. It's simply better sounding. Your nostalgia is keeping your ears from working properly. You can actually hear the separation of the instruments. I prefer remasters, technology just has improved so much since 86

"You can actually hear the separation of the instruments."
Odd, I actually think everything is muddier in the remasters, like someone just poured water all over it, where as the originals sound crisp & punchy.
I do think you need to "listen harder" to really get the benefits of the latter though, but worth the pay off for mine.

And in my view that's worse and I still think it sounds like someone poured water all over it
Cleaning it, but destroying it in the process
I think this is best illustrated by the clean sections 3:35 - 4:50 & for comparison in the remaster 12:11 - 13:25

Metallica is a business, and they force you to spend your money to keep up with them. I usually fail to notice the bass very clearly but in the remastered I too indeed find it to be in my face, and that's nice cause I hear it clearly. I'd still listen to the original instead cause of the reminiscence, nostalgia and the idea that "That's the original in the end" but I get Gabriel's point. I think you can hear Cliff's bass a little bit better in the 2017 remaster. normally I don't like such "changes" but in this case ....
the remaster sounds really much better than I expected it ....I thought they would brickwall compress the sound like on death magnetic, which sounds terrible...

Wow, I would pick old version because I guess didn’t know what Re mastered really was.
This is like Old school Metallica and modern days Metallica playing live.
Today, Metallica being sober, and playing for many decades,
But their quality now is near perfection.
(I haven’t enjoyed listening to Metallica in some years, but they are now at a level many bands don’t reach nor would
Motley Crue will go down as one of the greatest because the way they finished. No other band from the 80’s reached the level The Crüe did.
Just like no other reach Metallica’s level from the 80’s
So I’m damn proud that when I tell I story to my wife about when we were in the old Chevy truck, roll up windows, no ac, tape deck listening to Ride the Lightening messenger......
Told her see! I knew back then, Metallica was bad ass!!!!
Just because I hated st anger era.... doesn’t mean shit!
    Hahaha

First of all, the original Elektra SP/AR pressings, have "Direct Metal Mastering" and in general compering with the later pressings, they sound louder, sharper and brighter. For me is the best version of the album and i own 11 vinyl pressings at the momment.
Now comparing the original album with the remastered 2017, the original it sound with more guitar deformation and 80s atmosphere. In the remaster they tried to clean the sound from some noises but in exchange they cut all the 80s atmosphere from the back and the guitar deformation. You can notice that very easily in 0:33 of the song when "Cliff" bass go in. In the original you listen a 80s album but in the remastered you not.
Also in the first riff of "Battery" in the remastered you feel someone tickle your ears with some low profile riff but on the original the panic of the guitar deformation can break your neck.
Lastly the vinyl remastered is very buried and you need a giant soundsystem to listen loud the music. Very bad pressing. I prefer to listen it from the CD.

You can always change this and change that. First you had the general release, then the Direct Metal Masters on double gatefold. Now for an anniversary it gets polished up a bit more. With the technology Metallica haven't remixed anything but simply cleaned certain frequencies which is what mastering does. That's why when and justice for all was remastered the bass wasn't pushed forward. They never touched a fader but just altered the original master. At the end of the day a collector is going to buy it for sure. A fan may or may not buy it as the songs still have the same feel to them.

It’s significantly quieter and it has less overall bass than the original. I guess it comes off as clearer, but you have to crank the volume up to where you hear hiss. Mastering seems to take on a different direction every year. One year it’s about volume to the point of distortion, the next year it’s about staying away from the peak to the point that it’s lifeless and has hiss. There must be a medium. The new MOP is quieter than RTL and KEA. That’s just dumb. Remaster them at the same time and make the catalog equal. KEA has been the best remaster thus far.

This has been my go to album, basically, for about 34yrs (bought it on release). I didn't even know about the DCC and the previous remaster. Just learned about the 2017 one. Long story short: not interested! I don't hear anything that I want to pay money to hear instead of the original version.
I got the cd not long after the Direct Metal Mastering double 45 (which has been in a pvc sleeve, is virtually unplayed and will be going up on eBay very soon) and have been listening to it and it's rip tirelessly, ever since.
The remastering industry is very interesting. With very few exceptions, it isn't done particularly 'for us', I don't think. It's 'for them' (the music biz). It rarely yields up any hugely benefitial improvements. I've learned from forum comments and personal experience to avoid the vast majority of them. Megadeth's were fucking Megashite.
One notable exception was Soundgarden's recent Ultramega OK remaster. It had a sound which neither the band or this fan was very enamoured with at the time but which now sounds much, much better.

Since this is vinyl, it sounds completely different or the other uploaders did something wrong. This comparison is great. I think they both sound good, but different. Need more listening to decide.

I still prefer the original, but, its kind of obvious that the original needs a bit of "something" ...here and there to "get to the promise Land"!!.. right?...ok, once i say that!!, i think the remast almost done it...its a bit louder and that always forces to "rebalance" the output to listen to the songs on equal perspective and yes, of course thats a good point of the new one but thats a reason also to not know wish is better...so i try to listen with a equal dB output and i find that the new (as i sounds "right away"...) is more crear and dont lose the punch of the song but it felts diferent on some moments and i think it lost some of mystical carácter of the song in certein frecuencies from the original, that of course, i guess we all know!! and thats maybe one of the reason that we are here listening to this two samples of one of the most famous song of Metallica...anyway, good job!! for the remast!! But to me, still better the original...in other words...with a external EQ gear on the chain before the output ...i think anyone can do what the remast did, or maybe; why not! .. even do better...who knows!! Not bad!! but to me, it was just close to "get to the promise Land" ..so close in fact!! Thx!!! Greetings!!!
